Running

Alice POV I was still entranced by the news. I didn't even have time to think about it much, because we heard some roaring and growling in the distance. "Kayla, someone is coming. From the sounds they make, they seem to be raging. " I said, focusing my hearing on the sounds. "Yes, I'm listening to it too." "The sounds come from that direction." I pointed as I stuffed the two remaining apples into my backpack. "By the sound, I can tell they're here in a few minutes." My mind started to race, thinking about what to do. I pulled my panties down and started to pee. I did it because I had a plan. "Really Alice? Now that we have to run, do you remember to do that?" Kayla snorted in anger. “Pick up some rocks! Please hurry up. Trust me.” I asked while trying to concentrate on what I had to do. It's not easy to pee when you have enemies coming your way and an angry face watching you. Kayla, who finally gathered some stones beside me, looked at me in disbelief. I finally did what I had to do. I pulled out one of the knives I kept, grabbed my hair with one hand, and with the other, using the knife, I cut a lock of it. I asked Kayla to do the same. I expected Kayla to start taunting me because she really did look angry, but to my amazement, she obeyed quickly. I took it, stone by stone, and passed it on the damp earth with my pee, trying, as much as possible, to make the earth stick to the stone to stay wet. Always be careful to do that without getting my hands dirty. What a disgusting idea I had. I gathered some of my hair and Kayla's too and joined it there too, with my pee and dampness. Oh, Moon Goddess! What a disgusting thing to do. I started to throw the stones with all the strength I had, in different directions. The goal is to spread our scent over several areas so that they are confused about the direction we are going. Kayla's face finally changed from her angry expression to one of one who finally understood what I was doing. Without speaking, I signaled her to start running. We started to run. I avoided going through areas of land, always preferring areas with stones or covered with moss or green leaves, in order to avoid leaving footprints. You are good. I heard Thea praising. Let me smell around. She asked and I nodded. She has submerged me from my consciousness enough to use her full sense of smell. Alice, if we keep going, we're going to enter the heart of the forest. If we stray a little and go diagonally, we head towards the river again. Thea informed me and I told Kayla what she said. "River. We don't know the dangers of the forest and, as you said, the river helps to mask our scents." "But we're going to be more exposed," I said to her, with a worried expression. "Do you know how to swim?" I heard her asking me. Just the idea makes me uncomfortable. Wolves and water are not exactly the most intimate relationship, but at this point, it might be the best option. Whoever was coming was in great numbers. I could tell by the sounds they were in their werewolf form. The more time, the smaller our advantage over them, once they follow any trail of us. That is the best option. Swim. Hiding all possible evidence of our trails. "Enough not to drown," I confessed, hiding my fears. Actually, that's all I know how to do; swim the basics. If the current is strong or if there is any unforeseen event, I probably won't survive. But let´s not think about it now. Thea guided us along the way. We finally got close to the river. To our surprise, the cliff was very high. To get to the river, we would have to jump and dive. "Kayla, I'm not able..." Fear is taking over. Thea hid in my mind, she is afraid, just like me. "We have to do it. This part is deep. My only concern is if there are rocks at the bottom of the river. But since they're not visible, I reckon there's enough depth," Kayla says as she looks intently at the water around us. "I'll go first. When I get back to the surface, wait a few seconds just so I can catch my breath and then you jump. I´ll help you then if you need." Her words seemed to echo in my head. I started to see everything white and Kayla's voice getting more and more distant. When I awoke to my senses, I spat out water and tried to catch my breath. I was in the water, with Kayla holding me, one of her arms around my neck, helping me to stay afloat. The realization that I'm in the water starts to generate panic. I feel my body resisting, moving frantically. I can see Kayla starting to get into trouble as she starts to surface and submerge in a struggle, spitting out water. But I couldn´t think... Relax please, or you'll kill us at four. Thea says in a commanding voice, causing my body to stop at her order. Kayla finally stays afloat, holding me. "I don't know who my worst enemy is right now. It's the one looking for us or you, who almost drowns me." Kayla's displeasure is evident in the tone she used. "Try to relax your body and when you're calmer let me know, and I'll let you take control. We have to swim in the direction of the current." Kayla asked. Fortunately, the current is in the right direction. "Alice, maybe it's best to float for a while. The current is weak but strong enough to take us in the right direction. I can't hear any noises and I'm starting to get tired. Your resistance has exhausted me. Do you know how to float?" "Yes." Do I, really? I´m not even sure if I know it now, with my fears in a wild race. "I'll let go of your body slowly. Try to float and I'll try to grab your hand and do the same." She informs me almost in a whisper. We've been floating for some time now. I don't even know how, but my body is thanking me for this moment. Feeling the water, and hearing the sounds of the small movements, can relax us almost as if by magic. From time to time, I feel Kayla let go of my hand. I can tell, the point is to look around, trying to figure out where we are and when we should stop. The current, once again in our favor, had picked up speed but nothing to worry about. "Alice, Alice...", Kayla tries to get my attention. I straighten my body, moving my arms and legs so I can swim and talk to her. "I can't see the forest on the other bank anymore. I think we're far enough away. Let's swim to the bank." Kayla informed, indicating with her head the shore where we should swim. I try to keep up with her but she is much faster than me. When she realizes the distance between us is increasing, she slows down and waits for me. With each stroke, I ask the Moon Goddess, Selene, to help me get to shore. We finally reached it. I´m so happy! We are already on our feet and walking toward the sand made of thick stones. Finally, we sat down. We are exhausted. We try to catch our breath. I'm starving, but unfortunately, I had to drop my backpack to be able to swim. The only thing I kept with me was a knife that, amazingly, was always stuck in my underwear and never hurt me. "Who are you?" a male voice startled us. We were so tired and preoccupied with recovering that we didn't hear or smell anyone approaching. "s**t!" I said, looking at the angry werewolf warrior who was pointing his finger at us.
