Alpha Lucas POV
My morning was a boring one. Pack issues have taken up a lot of my time and I haven't been able to look for my mate lately.
Alpha's life has many perks, but it has brought loneliness over time. I spend my days cooped up in the office, training with the warriors or in meetings. I arrive at the end of the day tired and... and alone. My parents have been traveling, they wanted to enjoy life.
My sister went to live with another pack because she found her mate.
My Beta and Gamma go to their mates whenever they can. They have someone waiting for them, with whom they can talk about their day, with whom they can share love and affection. I'd like to look forward to getting home, but it's actually the opposite.
At home, I find only solitude.
The mateless shewolves are always after me. If it was love... but no, it's the power that attracts them. They always end up insisting or asking to be the Luna of the Pack. I use them when they offer themselves, but only for s*x and never more than once. I cannot allow them to bond with me and suffer because of that.
I don't want a chosen mate. I want my fated mate. I think I deserve that and I will wait for her.
I went to the packhouse to lunch with the high ranks and their families, as usual.
"Where is Jacob?" I asked when I realized he was not sitting at the table.
"He woke up very early and said he was going to let his wolf run. " Smith, my Beta, informed me.
"Always the same thing!" I shouted, angry with the childish behavior of my brother.
Jacob is my younger brother. He had just been through his first shift. Ever since then, he was always disappearing. Always making trouble, there wasn´t a day he didn´t screw up. He was also a warrior, one of our best warriors, but with so much trouble he got, I was afraid for his future.
A week ago he got distracted and went outside the Pack's borders. He was attacked by several rogues. He got away with it but was injured and took several hours to recover.
Two days ago, he got involved with a shewolf. His father smelled his scent, followed him, and tried to beat him. Of course, the father was the one who was beaten...
Speaking about the hormonal werewolf, me and my Beta, Smith, just got a mindlink from him.
Alpha, Beta, I have a problem here. His voice has traces of humor, which scares me even more.
Again, Jacob? Sigh, because this has started to be a daily habit.
Not like the other problems I had. He laughs a little.
I met two women on the border, next to the river. I'm taking them with me.
Werewolves? Smith asked. This child, Jacob, is always given only half the information.
"Yes. One is rogue, I guess. I really don't know. The other has a pack, but I don't recognize the scent." He must be kidding me.
"Do you guess? She is or she is not!" This kid is getting worse and worse. I'm starting to think you're purposely irritating me.
"You'll see, brother. You´ll see. Where do you want me to take them?"
"Take them to the training ground." I answered him and closed the mindlink.
We finished lunch and headed to the training ground.
My wolf starts to get impatient. He doesn't say anything, but I feel his impatience growing. There's a scent in the air, something sweet that catches my attention; wild berries. The closer I get to the training ground, the more intoxicating the aroma becomes. My wolf is getting more and more agitated...
"Do you smell this, Smith?" I asked him, feeling the alluring scent.
"Yes, I can smell a rogue, but it has a strange smell, like it has another scent associated, like she belonged to a pack too. And i smell someone, a shewolf, who belongs to another pack." Smith's answer confused me.
Jacob comes with two young shewolves. When I saw them, my heart warmed and my wolf went into craziness.
What an attractive smell!
"Mate!" I screamed when I saw the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen in my entire life. Perfect! So beautiful and hot!
She looks confused.
I heard another scream, from the other shewolf, but I couldn't even make out what she was saying. I'm completely focused on my fated mate, who I've finally found. I move even closer and mutter, "Mate!"
I expected her to scream the same as I did. I expected her to cry with joy or look surprised. I never expected her to avoid my gaze and look at the shewolf beside her. I'm confused. I notice now the other shewolf is crying nonstop as she looks at me. My mate's face was in pain too and I felt my heart tighten.
Brother, something is wrong with them. Maybe it's best to let them deal with their emotions first. Jacob sends by mindlink.
My heart beats erratically now. My wolf is in pain, he wants to hug and relieve any pain our mate is feeling.
Lucas, they're scared. Something must have happened. Try to take it easy, or you'll scare her even more. Smith warns, not as my Beta, but as my friend. What he said seemed to make sense. With much reluctance on my part, I took a step back and tried to restart communication.
"My name is Lucas, I'm the Alpha of the Middlemist's Red Pack. Welcome!" I tried to look as natural as I could, but failed at it. I really suck at this! My wolf Aric is in a frenzied state. I had to block him, as his primal instincts were too strong to deal with this.
Both their faces, my mate's and her friend's, were pained. I didn´t understand. I did not know what to do or what to say. Such a big almighty Alpha I was, when I didn´t know how to speak or act in front of my mate.
Dude, they were soaked. The other shewolf said your mate took hours to swim and got a lot of sun. Maybe it's better to invite the two of them into the packhouse, give them something to eat and a place to rest. Jacob's mind linked me to give this vital information.
I never thought about saying this, but my brother is right. If that was the truth, what they needed was to eat and rest. Maybe it was that, my mate is exhausted and needs to rest.
"I am Jacob, warrior of this Pack. Alpha Lucas' brother. This is Beta Smith. You?" Jacob was trying to help me. I guess he found out that I lack this kind of romantic stuff. I can´t believe I didn't even ask their names.
The crying shewolf looked at me with so deep emotions that I felt my insides churn with nerves.
"Alice. My name is Alice. " Her pained face, for a few moments, faded, leaving a slight smile that didn't reach her eyes.
I looked at the one who was half mine. What name will my goddess have? I thought as I gazed at her hazel eyes. Her eyes shifted from me to Alice, from Alice to me, she seemed lost and terrified.
The silence was starting to worry me.
"Her name is Kayla." The shewolf, who was looking at me intently, replied while a tear ran down her cheek.
"Kayla," I repeated the name, liking the way it sounded. Such a perfect name.
"You must be exhausted. Come with us. You can eat and rest if you want." Smith said, looking at them closely. He had traces of confusion on his face.
Once again, I was not able to invite them. It was my Beta. I was so lost that I even felt ashamed of myself. They nodded.
The five of us went to the packhouse. I kindly asked an omega, Thais, to bring some food for the guests.
Kayla's eyes even lit up when she saw the food coming. Looked like I was finally going to conquer her through the stomach, I thought to myself, laughing at my thoughts.
Neither of them spoke. Alice continued with her desolate face and Kayla had the same expression as one who is lost in her own thoughts, zoning out.
"Can we rest, please?" Those were her first words, in a sweet, harmonious voice. It was like a plea. Her voice sent shivers through my body, lust was showing itself. My wolf Aric heaved a sigh of pleasure, which passed to me even though he was blocked.
"Sure." I sent a mindlink to some omegas, asking them to prepare the room next to mine.
"Alice and I want to stay in the same room, if possible. I need to talk to her, it will be easier this way. Alpha Lucas, thank you for your hospitality. When we wake up, we'll talk to you. We've been awake for more than 24 hours. I ask for your understanding."
Calling me Alpha Lucas made me a hard-on. However, despite this physical display, I didn't like her treating me so formally. I tried to disguise any trace of lust so Kayla wouldn't feel embarrassed of me.
My Wolf wasn't satisfied, he wanted to go to the room with her, take her as his, in every way possible. It feels like my block isn't strong enough when it comes to our mate, I smiled to myself.
"Kayla, call me Lucas, please. I understand. We'll talk when you wake up."
I saw that Smith was going to speak. He opened his mouth but closed it in the meantime. He is having strange behavior. I must talk with him later.
"The room is ready, Alpha." One of the omegas informed me.
"Two beds are needed after all," I told the omega.
"Kayla, did you swim to get here?" Jacob asked, interrupting the silence that was being felt.
"Yea." Kayla quickly responded without further information.
"So they had to swim for hours," Smith mutters.
"A whole morning," Alice replied, looking me in the eyes once more. There's something strange about this shewolf. Her gaze is a whirlwind of emotions, I thought to myself.
I look closely at Kayla and I can see how her skin is slightly pink on her cheeks, the effects of the sun. I feel some pride in knowing that they survived safe and sound for several hours on the river. My little mate is a tough one.
"Alpha Lucas, may I ask a question that may be private and inappropriate?"Alice's intervention caught the attention of everyone present in the room. Even the omegas looked at Alice in surprise.
"As this is a private and inappropriate question, I reserve the right not to respond, if I wish. If you agree with this condition, then yes, you can ask whatever you want."
"Alpha Lucas, do you believe in love or just a mate bond?"
I was prepared for several questions, but not for this one. I was taken by surprise.
Kayla looked at Alice with such a sad face that I just wanted to lift the table, grab her in a big hug and make her forget all the sadness.
"I believe in love, but I believe that a mate bond is much more than love," I answered honestly. Alice lowered her head. I saw her chin trembling as if she was fighting a sadness that overwhelmed her. I saw Kayla playing with her fingers and her eyes focused on her hands as if withdrawing from the world. My stomach contracted and I felt deep pain. How can I help her?
"The room is prepared with two beds," The omega informed me.
"Come, I'll accompany you," I said to both, showing the way.
