Chapter 1: The Setup

398 Words
The sun was just setting over the village as Maico’s birthday celebration reached its peak. Music and laughter filled the air, and Jacob found himself nursing a drink near the edges of the gathering. He kept his eyes on Maia, though he tried to be discreet. Her laugh echoed in his ears, and the way she seemed to glow with happiness had his heart in knots. But it wasn’t only his emotions that kept him on edge that evening. As he wandered closer to the main house to catch a moment alone, he overheard Maia’s mother, Mrs. Sinclair, talking in hushed but heated tones to a man he vaguely recognized—a wealthy merchant in his forties. Jacob stopped in his tracks, his attention fully captured by their conversation. "I’ll make sure she agrees," Mrs. Sinclair whispered, her voice trembling with desperation. "You know I have no other way to pay you back." The merchant chuckled, low and cold. "Good. I expect a wedding date soon, then." Jacob’s stomach twisted. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Marry Maia off to pay a debt? His mind raced, and a cold fury simmered beneath his shock. He knew Maia’s family struggled, but to give her away like this? At barely eighteen? He spent the rest of the evening in turmoil, unable to ignore the conversation he’d overheard. He knew he’d do anything to protect Maia, even if that meant taking extreme measures. He glanced over at her, laughing with friends, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around her. An idea began forming in his mind, one that felt desperate yet unavoidable. He’d do what he must to protect her from a marriage to a man who only saw her as a payment plan. But he wondered if he could really go through with it. The decision weighed heavily on him as he poured Maia a drink, telling her he thought she might like it. She trusted him implicitly, smiling as she took the glass. Guilt tore at him as he watched her drink, not realizing this would set his plan in motion. Later that night, as the village quieted and the festivities wound down, Jacob led a drowsy Maia to a secluded room, gently helping her into bed. He stayed with her, watching her fall asleep, her face peaceful and innocent, unaware of the consequences that tomorrow would bring.
