But Maico’s patience was gone. “Do you understand what you’ve done?” he demanded, stepping closer. “You’ve ruined her reputation, Jacob. My sister’s future!”
Mrs. Sinclair turned to her son, placing a hand on his arm. “Maico, please,” she said quietly, but her face was drawn and tight, worry and disappointment written all over it. “This isn’t just about us. The whole village will hear about this.”
Maico turned back to Jacob, his voice a cold command. “Take responsibility,” he said, his words ringing with finality. “You owe her that much.”
Maia looked between them, her mind spinning. “Wait, what? Take responsibility? For what?” She turned to Jacob, her eyes pleading. “Did…did something really happen between us?”
Jacob’s eyes softened as he met her gaze, but he couldn’t bring himself to lie. He nodded, though the answer wasn’t as simple as she thought. “Yes,” he said quietly, and she felt the weight of his words settle over her, confirming her worst fears.Maia felt a wave of emotions—shock, confusion, anger, and sadness—all colliding within her. She’d always seen Jacob as a safe haven, her brother’s best friend, someone she trusted completely. And now, everything felt different, as if the very ground beneath her feet had shifted.
Her mother spoke up, her voice hard and cold. “Jacob, if you have any decency left, you’ll do what’s right and marry her.”
Jacob took a deep breath, steeling himself. “I will,” he said firmly, his eyes not leaving Maia’s face. “I’m ready to marry her, to take responsibility.”Maico’s anger dimmed, but the hurt remained. “You’d better mean it, Jacob. Because if you back out, you’ll have to answer to me.”
Jacob nodded, though inside, he struggled with guilt over what he’d put Maia through, even if it was to protect her from something far worse. But he knew he had to make amends, to show her that he was serious about keeping his promises and making things right.
Maia looked between her brother and Jacob, still reeling. She couldn’t believe her life had changed so drastically overnight. She hadn’t expected to get married at eighteen, much less to Jacob, her brother’s best friend. And as she looked at Jacob’s face, a mixture of regret and determination in his eyes, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this story than anyone was saying.
