A Stormy Day to Drown
I...I can't breath. HELP... He thought out loud the word that he thought he would never even bothered to use or say in front of anyone he know. Well, he can only hear himself and he was drowning. He sees a light from above and tried to swim his way up but every time he surfaced, a big wave always pushes him back to the bottom of the deep, dark cold sea. He kept resurfacing but he would always get pushed down again by the big monstrous waves until he feels like he couldn't struggle to move anymore. His body was weakening and was ruining out of air and slowly, was sinking to the bottom of the sea. At his last strength he was only able to reach out his hand midway under the water. The light from the surface was fading and fading, and so was he…
The world is cruel. Sam hates it, but at the same time he feel like there's something else for him out there and yet he feels so undetermined to find his place in this world. Maybe...just maybe, he thought, he was not meant to be in this world but was meant for something far more different than here. He feels like he was meant for something greater. Was I meant for something great? Or is this just something I made myself to believe? Do I really belong here?, he thought to himself.
Sam sat up from his bed, sweating and heavily breathing, trying to process the dream he woke upon. This dreams has been going on for more than a month now. He glanced at his alarm clock at his right side of his bed. It was still 3:24 in the morning. He cuffed his face and let out a big sigh of frustration. He slowly looked over his room, and it was dimly lighted by a street lamp post outside.
Finally, Sam let out another breath and got up from his bed. He went to his bathroom and washed his faced and stared at himself. Sam has medium tanned skin, and has a toned body build for a senior high schooler. His eyes showed light brown eyes and has firm facial features and dark jet black hair and thin lips and a well-built nose. He stared at his own face, I look DEAD, he thought while looking at himself expressionless in the mirror. Well, not really dead but the sight of himself looking less alive from the past few days because of his nightly visitors, the dreams or shall we say nightmares. The dream of himself always drowning felt so real to him that he even feels the water filling up his mouth and lungs, trying to gasp for air. His body shivered at the thought of this dream, like it was a sign that he would surely soon die from this world. He shook off the thought and wiped his face and went to his closet to get changed. He changed into his favorite dark blue sweater, black sweat pants and wore his black tennis shoes.
He then peeked outside his bedroom door not making a noise while opening it. The door from across the hall was his parent's room and he checked any signs if they were awake. He let out a quick sigh and silently tiptoed down the hall, the wooden floor creaked silently as stepped on it. He stopped to glance at the in between his room and his parents room. It belonged to his older sister who passed two years ago while he was still in 9th grade from a car accident their family was in. It happened before thanks giving and her sister was still in senior high. He and his parents survived only her older sister didn't make it. They were on their way to their old folks, their dad's parents to celebrate thanksgiving.
He and his sister were so close, when their parents were almost on the brink of divorce, she was the only person who would always comfort Sam. She was a strong-willed person and a smart one too. She would always come in between their parents who were always shouting at each other. Their parents, after her older sister died decided not to continue their divorce and that they soon realized that they still loved each other dearly. But sad to say they only realized it at the cost of the life of their own first born child, their daughter. Her name was Krista and Sam looked up to her, even though they are no longer with them. That night of the accident, their parents were quarreling while they were on their way to their father's parents and their dad was the one driving. At the same time they were arguing about divorce in front of their children. Actually Sam blames his parents for Krista's death. All these flashbacks made Sam sick and teary-eyed but he mustered his strength not to, because he knows that Krista doesn't want him to cry.
Sam finally snapped out of it and continued down the hall until he was finally on the top of their stairs and was about to take a step down his first step when he stopped midway. He saw two yellow eyes staring at him at the bottom of the stairs. He almost had a heart attack when he realized it was just his pet cat Shadow. Shadow went up the stairs to greet his master, and was purring at Sam's feet, greeting his maser and also a way of saying "Where do you think you're going this early?". "I'm just going out for a jog buddy, I'll be back later. Don't worry.", he whispered to Shadow. Sam pet his purring cat for assurance of his master's return and continued quietly downstairs.
Sam silently loosened the front door's lock, went outside and locked the door from the inside. He walked down their front porch and stopped in front of their house at the side walk just to glance back at their house. Their house is simple and yet it used to be warm and cozy and most especially a happy place to live, or used to be, Sam thought. Their house is painted with light blue paint and the roof is painted dark blue with accents of white for the rain pipes. He looked at his house for the last time, before letting out a big sigh and wore his hoodie on. He started to jog in the early cold September morning with his earpods on and played music at full blast.
Sam jogged forward not really caring where he would go, until he didn't realized that it was a bit bright. He glanced at his watch, it was already 6:12am in the morning but the sky was kinda gloomy for an early jog. He felt a shiver ran down his spine, but shrugged the feeling off about the weather. I think its going to rain, Sam thought to himself as he continued jogging for another few minutes or so until he came upon a a beach. He could see that the sky was already a bit darker and glanced at his watch again, it was 6:34am. It could rain any sooner, I guess, Sam thought.
Sam saw a middle-aged guy with a kid, a girl, around 5 or 6 years old, strolling by the shore near the water. I guess, its not bad to take a stroll on the beach with gloomy clouds above you, he smiled a bit. So he decided to walk down the beach sand, and found a good spot to sit down. He sat down on a old log laying near the shore. It was the perfect spot to spectate the glooming weather. He heard the waves crashing the shore and felt the strong cold wind coming from the sea. The view was so sullen and yet breath taking at the same time. He felt at peace even though it was a dark somber day by the sea.
This beach was actually a place where he and his sister, Krista would escape from their parents' on and off conflicts. Both of them had good memories here, and their family as well used to come here at this beach to enjoy their summer. It was not a private beach or any public beach, it no one's property, and so it was not really crowded with people and it was not off limits to anyone, so they were always free to come here as they please to enjoy every summer vacation. That was when they were still both young, innocent and free.
There was one time that her sister would prank him that she was drowning and it always gets to him. Sam was still so young and gullible. Those were actually the days that their family was always happy and enjoying each other's time and company. But the beach visits only stopped when their grandmother and grandfather died, their mom's parents. Their Grandma Fae was always so gentle and sweet to them and so was Grandpa Felix. Whenever their family had time, they would pack up and visit the old folks place.
"HELP!", Sam snapped out from his thoughts and looked over to the guy who was running towards him. The guy was bearded and he has a big muscle build but when you see his face he's the kind of guys whose gentle and sweet, a perfect father figure. "Help! My daughter... I was fixing our stuff so that we could leave already and when I turned around I couldn't find her." the guy said in between pants and with fear and panic in his eyes. "DADDY! HEL-" her words were cut off of. Sam and the kid's dad looked quickly over the sea water, and there she was. She was struggling to keep herself surface but she was being swept by the waves that were already stronger and bigger from a while ago. Sam ,without thinking. rushed over towards the girl and said "Call 911!", he shouted back at the kid's father and then when the water was on his waist, he dived. Sam used to be a swimmer back in the days but he was not a strong one.
The waves were strong and he was not prepared to deal with the waves but he was gathering all his might to swim towards the girl. The girl was about a few meters away from him but it was already way too deep but the girl was struggling for her life and it was the bravest thing he saw. The waves were pushing Sam back and sweeping the girl away. But he swam harder fighting back the waves that were pushing him away. Then he finally reached the girl and held her by his right arm and looked over the shore. The girl was wearing a beautiful red dress and has a blond hair and blue eyes, she was pretty and cute.
Sam glance back the shore and he could see that the father was frustrated and was worried sick for her daughter while he was shouting over his phone for assistance. Sam doesn't have that much time because it was starting to pour down heavily and the wind and waves were getting stronger as well. So he has to think fast of what to do or both of them would drown.
A few feet away from him he saw a floating light post, and he urged himself to swam towards it. Fighting back the waves and keeping the girl safe on his back. The girl, even though was already weak, still held on for her dear life on Sam's shoulder and she was also shivering cold. But Sam swam and swam until he reached the floating light post and let the girl climb over the light post. "Hold on very tight and wait for daddy", he told the girl. "O-okay. T-thank you", shivering and saying in a weakened voice.
Out of nowhere a big monstrous wave washed over Sam and lost his grip from the metal rails of the light post. "NooO!", she heard the girl scream while he was washed over. Sam saw himself being toppled and rolled by the waves like the clothes on a washing machine. He couldn't fight back and he was already getting weak. Suddenly he realized that this was the dream that he had. Fearing that it will really be the death of him he finally mustered the strength to surface but was again washed down by a monstrous wave. Again and again he tried, and the waves were stronger than ever. He was starting to panic and yet he couldn't find a way to overcome his situation. Finally, a bigger and stronger wave washed him down midway underwater. This is it, he thought to himself. He was was already to weak and and he could feel his strength fading. He could feel his consciousness fading and slowly he was being swallowed by the deep cold sea water. With his final strength left he was only able to raise his hand on the fading light from the surface. It was fading and fading until he felt himself fade as well. Goodbye world, hello sister, I'll be meeting you soon, Sam's final thoughts to himself.
