Chapter One
As I walked into the school hallway, I could feel the stares of my classmates burning into my back. It was the same every day, and I had grown used to it, but it still hurt. I was the quiet girl who always kept to herself, and it seemed like no one wanted to be friends with me. I tried to fit in, but it was like I was invisible. I had always felt like an outsider in Las Cruces high school, ever since I could remember. I didn't know why, but I just never seemed to belong. The other kids would whisper behind my back, and sometimes they would make fun of me. It was hard, but I tried not to let it get to me. The only person who seemed to understand me was my best friend Diego. We had been friends since kindergarten, and he was always there for me. He was funny and outgoing, the complete opposite of me, but he never judged me. He always made me laugh, and his smile could light up a room. Diego was the only reason I came to school. Without him, I would have felt completely alone. He would walk me to class every morning and wait for me after school. We would eat lunch together, and he would tell me about all the funny things that had happened in his classes. I felt safe with him, and I didn't know what I would do without him. As we walked down the hallway, Diego nudged me with his elbow. "Hey, you know what I heard?" he said, grinning at me. "What?" I asked, trying to sound interested. "I heard that Ms. Ramirez is retiring at the end of the year. Can you believe it?" he said, shaking his head. I smiled, grateful for his attempt to cheer me up. "No way. She's been teaching here forever." Diego nodded. "Yeah, I know. I wonder who's going to take her place." We walked in silence for a few more minutes before we reached my classroom. Diego hugged me before I went in and whispered, "I'll see you after school." I smiled at him before going inside, but was welcomed with stern gazes from all directions in my classroom. I scanned the classroom nervously, feeling isolated without my best friend Diego. The other students were all staring at me, talking about me behind my back. I had always felt like an outsider, and it seemed like everyone knew it. I tried to concentrate on the lesson, but my mind kept wandering. Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see a group of girls snickering at me. "What do you want?" I asked, my voice shaking. The girls smirked, and one of them said, "Just wondering what it's like to be a freak." I felt my face flush with embarrassment and anger. Even though I knew I was different, it still hurt to hear them say it out loud. "I'm not a freak," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. The girls continued to taunt me, and I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I just wanted to live happily and have friends like everyone else. But it seemed like no matter what I did, I would always be an outsider. As the bell rang, the girls got up and left, still laughing. I sat in my seat, feeling alone and defeated. But just then, the door opened, and Diego walked in. "Hey, sorry I'm late," he said, smiling at me. "What did I miss?" I couldn't hold back the tears any longer. I got up from my seat and ran to him, burying my face in his chest. "I can't do this anymore," I sobbed. "I'm so tired of feeling like a freak." Diego wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight. "You're not a freak," he said, his voice firm. "You're my best friend, and I love you just the way you are." I looked up at him, my eyes swollen from crying. I knew that I was lucky to have a friend like him, someone who believed I was normal like everyone else. "Thank you," I said, wiping my tears away. "I don't know what I'd do without you." "Hey, that's what friends are for," Diego said, grinning. "Now come on, let's go grab some coffee at Luna’s." Feeling relieved and reassured that with Diego by my side, I could face anything, I followed him. As I walked down the street with Diego, I felt carefree and happy, enjoying his company and the beautiful day. Suddenly, a man with cropped black hair and piercing blue eyes stepped in front of us, blocking our path. I could’ve sworn I never knew him in the past, but I recognized him immediately as Juan Ortiz, and I felt a sense of unease. "Hello, Sofia," Juan said, his voice low and commanding. I greeted him back, feeling nervous, "Hi, Juan. What can I do for you?" "I need to speak with you alone," Juan said, his eyes fixed on mine. Diego looked at me, concern etched on his face, "I'll wait for you at the cafe," he said, giving me a reassuring smile. As Diego left, Juan turned to me and said, "I need to tell you something important, something about your heritage." As he spoke, my heart raced with anticipation. I listened intently, trying to make sense of what he was saying. He told me that I came from a long line of powerful werewolves, and that my family was one of the oldest and most respected in our pack. I was stunned, "I don't understand," I said, shaking my head. "How is that possible? My parents never told me anything about this." Juan sighed, "Your parents were trying to protect you. They wanted you to have a normal life, away from all of this. But you need to know the truth." My mind was spinning with disbelief. Werewolves? Heritage? It all seemed so surreal. "What do I do now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Juan's expression became grave as he replied, "You need to start your training. To learn how to control your powers and become the werewolf you were born to be." I felt overwhelmed by the weight of the information. My life would never be the same again. But at the same time, a part of me felt exhilarated by the possibilities that lay ahead. Suddenly, Diego's voice interrupted my thoughts, "Sofia, are you okay?" I turned to look at him, realizing he was worried about me, but before I could respond, Juan spoke again, "Sofia, you need to listen to me. Our pack is in danger, come with me.”
