Chapter 9

1291 Words
“Wait kids, before we eat it’s very important we bless the food. Didn’t your mother teach you that?”  Mosi was a bit embarrassed. He felt the heat coming to his face but he still managed to answer meekly. “Yes grandma. Mom taught us to bless the food. However I never took it to heart and I usually forgot. It’s been a long while since the last time we blessed the food before eating.” “At least she did teach you to do it. It’s not her fault if you don’t learn.”  Elisa secretly thought it indeed was her daughter’s fault if she didn’t make sure her kids learned but she wasn’t about to say that to the young ones. It’s important they understand that learning is their responsibility. Otherwise they will always be counting on their elders to do things for them and to solve their problems.  After blessing their meal everyone digged in to their heart’s content. It had been a long time since the kids had such a sumptuous dinner. Dinner carried on in silence until the plates were clean.  “Grandma, I realized there’s a lot of food left when we were helping ourselves. Is it okay to have a second serving?”  “I don’t mind, but what about your parents? When are they coming home? Don’t you leave food for them for when they arrive?”  At the mention of their parents like this out of the blue Teo’s eyes got moist in a matter of seconds. It had been almost two years since he stopped crying regularly about their parents deaths. But he couldn’t help a couple of tears falling whenever they were mentioned.  “We haven’t gotten the chance to tell you yet grandma... Our parents are dead. They died more than 3 years ago.”  Elisa was stupefied at the news. She had absolutely no idea this had happened and wasn’t prepared to handle the situation.  So that’s the reason they are alone. It explains their lack of training and knowledge. It also explains why Mosi is working at a farm doing menial work just to get them by and put food on the table. It also explains why I was able to suddenly sense my blood and find their general location. Once their parents died the spell they used to hide themselves started wearing out. And here I had been thinking my daughter had forgiven me and it was her way of telling me to come over. “I’m truly sorry to hear that boys, I’m sorry for your loss and for all the experiences you’ve had to face because of it. I had no clue or knowledge of your parent’s death. How did they die?” “In a car crash. They left early one morning and where planning on coming back soon. The next day at the latest they had said before leaving. But before they had gone far they crashed with a truck.”  Elisa was thinking absentmindedly when Teo stood up from the table thanking for the meal and asking to be excused before he left for his room. “He is still sensitive to our parents death. We don’t talk about it much and whenever we do he still cries. Although not as much as the first year.”  “I’m sorry I brought it up after dinner. I might have just made him or you both suffer from indigestion with my question.”  “Don’t worry grandma. It’s more my fault for not telling you than yours.”  Mosi and Elisa kept talking a while before deeming it was time to head to bed. Mosi guided Elisa to what used to be his parent’s bedroom. It had been kept clean although neither of the brothers used it since they each had their own room.  “You can stay here grandma, this used to be our parent’s room. We keep it clean and tidy. I hope you have a good night.”  “You too kid, see ya tomorrow.”  The next morning when Elisa woke up breakfast was almost ready. Mosi usually woke up extremely early so he could prepare breakfast and lunch before going to work. After years doing this it was hard for him to wake up late on sundays.  “Good morning Mosi, need any help?”  “No thank you grandma, everything is almost ready. You hungry? Want to have breakfast right away or do you wish to wait for Teo? He should be up shortly.”  “Actually I have my own routine in the mornings. Before eating anything I drink hot water to wake up my system followed by hot lemonade and then some fruit. Only after all that do I eat breakfast.”  “I’m afraid we don’t have any lemons, but you most likely have some in your bag, right?”  “That’s right. I usually have everything I need or could need in my bag.” “Grandma... I don’t want to pry and I’m sure Teo will bombard you with questions when he wakes up but I can’t deny I’m truly interested in that bag of yours.”  “This old thing? It’s an heirloom of our sect and since your mother can’t inherit it now it will be yours one day if you wish.” “Mine? I wasn’t asking about inheriting it...” said Mosi blushing “I was just curious about it. How is it made? How much can it carry? With everything that you have inside it should be very heavy.”  “There’s no harm in being curious, I was actually wondering if you were going to ask me anything at all about what happened yesterday.” “It’s not like I wasn’t curious. It’s just that I didn’t want you to have to explain everything twice since I know Teo would be dying to know absolutely everything.” “Well to answer your questions, it was made so long ago that we don’t even know when it was made. It was made from the leather of a very rare and particular beast with a very complicated magic procedure. It has about the same amount of space as the living room though its cubic so maybe two living rooms? It’s around 5 cubic meters in size and it’s not very heavy. Things you put inside will enter a kind a stasis and become weightless you see?”  “5 cubic meters?” muttered Mosi surprised by the sheer capacity of the bag “Wow! No wonder you say you have everything you need or could need inside! What kind of beast has that leather? It should be incredibly expensive, can it be hunted?”  “Well you are right when you say it’s best I talk to you both together. There is much you two need to know and like you say, it’s tiring to say everything twice. Why don’t we skip the buying of groceries today and spend the day talking so I can start educating you and your brother?”  “I’d love to spend the day talking grandma, but if we don’t buy groceries today we won’t have anything to prepare the next week’s meals. Besides I was thinking about passing by the bookstore to check if the book we ordered arrived. Teo is a bookworm you see, and everytime I get a little bonus I use it to buy him a new book to read.”  “No need to worry about groceries, work, or money any longer Mosi. Grandma is here and she is here not only to stay but to take care of you and Teo as well. You’ve done an amazing job taking care of your little brother these past few years but you are not alone anymore. Besides you are still young so you should concentrate on learning everything your grandma has to teach.”  While the two were talking they hadn’t realized that a little someone had already woken up.  “Learning magic! Yes! Yes grandma! I, Teo will learn absolutely everything you have to teach!” said Teo abashedly, he couldn’t hide the pink in his face after he said that so he hurried to greet them “Good morning to both of you by the way.”
