Aftermath

Back in the hospital, Amanda McNeal, a forensic scientist, has arrived on the scene of the m******e moments after Alex and Terra escaped. Amanda's P.O.V. It was about 9pm when my team and I arrived at Freedom View Hospital. We were briefed about the attack that happened on the 6th floor. This is were they were keeping people infected by the fang virus. My colleges and I had seen many victims taken by infected attacks, but we never experienced such a massive one like this. It seemed as if this was the only floor touched. Every other floor was fine, but floor 6, west wing was something out of a horror movie. There were lifeless bodies scattered across the halls. I could see that some of the bodies belonged to infected patients but the majority were hospital staff. We had also heard that must of the blood transfusion storage units had been raided. My brother, Paul, was a detective who was assigned to the case with me. We would always find a way to work on the same cases. We helped each other with key details and evidence in our work. Our first job was to check the dead and take pictures and notes of everything. It was truly a gruesome sight. Throats of some of the staff were ripped out. Some staff members had large teeth marks all over their skin. The scene was chaotic. “Hey guy's,” I heard Paul call to us from the other side of the room. “This door is locked. Do you think..?” Paul stopped. His eyes grew wide and we all rushed to the door. The officers present drew their guns, ready to fire. Paul looked at us bravely, then he knocked on the door. “Is there anyone in here?” Paul asked. After a few seconds of silence, we heard a voice on the other side. “I'm here, and I want to negotiate.” My colleges and I were in awe. Paul stared at the door with wide eyes. He tried composing himself. I could tell he was just as scared as we were. We didn't know if this was a trick. Was it just one, or were there others. Paul signaled for his partner to look around for other closed doors. He called for backup as well. “You won't need to do that.” The voice spoke to us from the other side of the door. It gave me chills, but why was he still here? “Who locked you in here?” I asked. I had never seen the Fang-virus ward. I did not know that they locked the patients in the rooms. From the looks of this floor, I could see why. “I did.” He answered. “I saw everything that happened. Someone came to me, offering me and escape. He mentioned that the hospitals were killing us, not helping us. I didn't want to believe him and I wanted to find out myself. I did see strange things on this floor. There's yet to be any treatments or cures at all. Out of fear I locked myself in this room. Waiting for you.” After he finished speaking there was silence. Were they really just killing the infected off? That would explain the possible motive for this m******e. But he also said someone came to offer an escape as well. “So you want to negotiate?” Paul asked the man. “Yes, I want to ensure that I will not be murdered for being infected. In exchange, I will give you details about the man who came here to break everyone out. I'll tell you everything I know.” The man finished. Paul walked away from the door and gestured for us to follow. “I don't know about this.” Paul said. He looked worried. He had to deal with a lot of infected cases. He came close to getting infected as well. I touched his shoulder and reassured him. “My name is Richard, Richard Reeves by the way.” The man, now known as Richard called out to us. “I was born March 10th, 1991. They took my ID, which feels very suspicious, but you can look my name up on f*******: if you think I'm lying.” Richard called again. I quickly took out my phone and searched Richard's name. “The profile picture is me in front of a sun set.” He said. I looked him up on my f*******: app and found him, as he described. I showed it to Paul who then had someone run his records. “I'm going to believe your telling me the truth Richard.” Paul called to Richard. Another officer approached us accompanied by a nurse. She was pushing a large cart that looked full of clothes personal items. They were neatly placed into personal bags. “Sir, you might want to see this.” The officer called to Paul. Paul looked in the cart, astonished at all the bags. “What is this?” Paul asked the nurse. “Well, most patients on this floor, don't pull through. So we take their items and pack them up to send to their family.” The nurse replied shyly. Something was defiantly strange about this. Why were they so sure no one was going to pull through? Paul pulled out a bag from the cart. “Richard Reeves? I think I found your ID, your phone, and all your other things.” Paul called. “Really! Thank you! I'll tell you everything you need. Just please don't make me stay here. I want to go home.” Richard cried. “He would be a threat if we released him. He can only survive on blood.” The nurse said. “What if we locked him in his home? Can he survive on animal blood?” I asked.” “Perhaps, but its still dangerous.” The nurse replied. Suddenly I became invested in Richard's safety. He was infected, but he was still human. He didn't deserve to die. I also wanted a chance to study him. I'd never studied an infected person that was still alive. I know all I did was forensics but I knew a thing or two about epidemiology as well. “Richard, where do you live?” I asked him. “23 Lake Shore Road.” He responded. “What are you thinking Amanda?” Paul said concerned. “That's not too far from me. Can't you reinforce the locks on his house? You can even put an anklet on him. Like a quarantined house arrest. Then I can stop by and feed him and get samples, and you can get information from him.” I tried to explain it to Paul. He still looked worried. “ This is dangerous, its crazy, but we can try.” Paul said reluctantly. “Richard we're going to let you go home. But first your coming with me, alright.” “I understand, but before you open the door, I haven't eaten all day and I don't want to attack you.” Richard replied. He formed a since of self control which I found quite interesting. The news always portrayed the infected as mindless and blood thirsty. The nurse who was with us quickly rushed to find a blood packet. When she came back with one Paul closed in on the door, taking the pack. “Alright Richard, I'm going to toss the pack in. When your done, knock on the door, take five steps back, turn around with your back facing the door and put your hands up. You got that?” Paul shouted. “I got it.” Richard replied. Paul signaled for us to back away from the door. He then unlocked it slowly. Paul took a breath cracked the door and through the pack in. He slammed the door and locked it back. We waited in silence for a few seconds. Richard knocked on the door three times. We all silently counted to five. Paul and his squad got ready. “Alright we're coming in.” Paul called. “OK.” Richard responded back. Paul unlocked and opened the door. He and his squad rushed in. There was Richard, his back toward us with his hands up with only a hospital gown and boxers. The officers handcuffed him and put a mouth barrier on him. I pulled out the pants that were in his bag. “I think he might want these Paul.” I called. Paul took the pants and helped Richard into them. I gave him his shoes as well. Then I got to get a look at him. His eyes were bright red. He was brown skin with thick dark curls. His brows where thick which made him look intimidating. The eye color made him look intense. He also looked very tired. I realized he was staring at me. Maybe because I was staring at him. I looked down as Paul and his squad escorted him out. “Wait.” Richard stopped. “Can you put my phone and wallet in my pocket?” He asked. I quickly grabbed his phone and wallet and put them in his pockets. “Thanks.” He said, then let Paul take him away. “Amanda, are you alright?” My college Bill asked. “Yes.” I said snapping myself out of the trance. “Good because we still have work to do.” Bill said. I forgot I was in a room full of dead bodies. I still had a job to do. I pulled out my equipment and got to work. They would need to clean all this up, so I had to move quickly. Maybe this ordeal could uncover some secrets about this virus.
