Her words made my heart skip a beat. My heart throbs uncontrollably when I think of Charlotte being killed. Olivia and I had discussed killing Charlotte several times to remove the curse from me, but now things were no longer that simple.
"No. She is my mate." I shook my head and said.
Olivia's face turned pale in an instant. She took two steps back and shook her head repeatedly.
"How could this happen?" she murmured to herself.
"There must be a better solution." I patted her shoulder gently to comfort her.
After Olivia left, I fell on the sofa and breathed a sigh of relief.
I had brought trouble upon myself.
Could her presence make my situation worse on the next full moon? This matter will only be resolved next month.
After taking a short break, I returned to my desk and reviewed the financial status of all 48 tribes in the first quarter of this year. My eyes were fixed on the densely packed numbers on the paper, but I couldn't concentrate on a single word.
My heart felt empty, and I couldn't help but think about what Charlotte was doing now. I remember she had a lot of scars on her arms and legs. She was so thin, she must have been malnourished, and she was probably abused. What has she experienced?
I became more and more irritable and restless. I want to go to the attic and see her. My reason doesn't allow me to do this. I called Dr. Howard and asked him to come over as soon as possible. Then I asked Jessica, the head maid, to arrange for food and clothes to be delivered to her.
Damn it! I couldn't believe I cared about a w***e!
Olivia's POV
"No. She's my mate." Sebastian's words tormented me like a curse, causing a splitting headache and a tangled, painful heart.
I fought back tears as I hurriedly left his office. Once I closed the door behind me, I couldn't contain it any longer, and tears streamed down my face. I covered my mouth and ran back to my room; I didn't want anyone to see me in this state. I locked the door, leaned against it, and collapsed to the ground, feeling utterly drained. I knelt there, hands covering my face, and cried uncontrollably. I cried until I had no more strength left in me, my lips numb.
I loved him, had always loved him, and I couldn't even remember when that love had begun.
There were countless midsummer nights when we held hands and went to the lakeside to catch fireflies. In the forest with the flickering fireflies, Sebastian had kissed me, promising that I would be his Luna Queen, even though he was just ten at the time.
Both Sebastian and I were lonely souls. I had never met my parents. Thirty-two years ago, my uncle Joseph had abandoned five-year-old me at the castle's doorstep on the very day Sebastian was born. On that same day, his mother died from childbirth complications. His mother had been a complete stranger to him, and his father rarely appeared in his life. Besides those cold, lifeless books and the castle guards, who were as robotic as ever, I was his only companion. We relied on each other, provided comfort to one another, and consoled each other.
Before he turned eighteen, I had always hoped that he would never find his mate, so he would forever belong to me. However, that woman, Sophie, looked into his eyes just once, and my dreams shattered like fragile bubbles. She took Sebastian away from me. Every night, he stayed in her bed, kissing her, making love to her. The sounds of their moans pierced my heart like sharp knives. I couldn't bear it; a single glance at them filled me with unbearable jealousy. My heart shattered.
"If Sophie were to die, Sebastian would come back to me," the first time this thought flashed through my mind, I frightened myself.
Five years ago, Sophie became pregnant. Sebastian's gaze of love for her was intensified beyond measure. They were about to become a happy family of three, while I was destined to remain alone for the rest of my life.
Jealousy consumed my conscience, and I seriously contemplated the feasibility of killing Sophie. When Sophie was five months pregnant, Sebastian assigned me to take care of her. I secretly added a slow-acting poison to her food. Three months later, the poison took effect, and ugly blue spots covered her body. She vomited blood daily, and before her death, she had become a mere skeleton. I thought that with her turning this ugly, Sebastian would never want to see her again. But I was wrong. Every night, Sebastian stayed by her bedside, saying childish and silly words to encourage her, like, "You'll get better soon," or "We'll have many, many children." How I loathed it! Even though she was on the brink of death, she was a thousand times happier than I was.
Sophie's dying moments found Sebastian on his knees, cradling her in agony. Sophie looked at me and silently mouthed a single word: "Sorry."
She knew. She knew everything. She knew that I loved Sebastian, she knew I envied her, she knew it was me who had caused her death. But she didn't hate me. Why? Is there truly such a woman in this world, so pure and noble that she apologizes to the one who harmed her on her deathbed? No, this only made me loathe myself, made me appear even more repulsive. I would prefer it if she hated me.
And now, there's another woman named Charlotte. No matter how you look at it, she's far inferior to Sophie. Yet, the Moon Goddess favored her, arranging her to be Sebastian's second mate. It's unfair. I can't let the two of them be together!
I pulled out my phone and dialed Uncle Joseph's number.
With a click, the call connected. I heard the aged voice of Uncle Joseph at the other end.
"Hello, Olivia, what's happening?"
"Uncle Joseph, it's about Alpha Morgan's daughter, Charlotte Moore. She's Alpha King's mate. What should I do to get rid of her?" My voice carried a heavy nasal tone because of crying too much.
"Add more hallucinogens to Alpha King's medicine, worsen his symptoms. Then, tell him that Charlotte's arrival has intensified the curse," he suggested. His tone was calm as if he had foreseen this.
At first, Sebastian was just restless because of his mating season. I had prepared a mood-stabilizing potion for him, which worked quite well. After Uncle Joseph learned of this, he ordered me to add hallucinogens to the potion. I didn't know why my uncle wanted me to do that. But I discovered that when Sebastian took hallucinogens, he became even more dependent on me. I couldn't help but add more and more hallucinogens to the mix.
"Will a high dosage have any impact on his health?" I asked.
"No, it won't. Just do what I tell you," he replied.
"Alright, I understand. Goodbye." With that, I hung up the phone.
I dragged out a locked wooden box from under the bed. I pulled the key out of my coat pocket, unlocked the box, and took out a brown bottle of liquid. This bottle contained a high concentration of hallucinogens. I slipped the bottle into my pocket, locked the wooden box, and pushed it back into its place.
When Sebastian left his office to have lunch in the dining room, I sneaked into his office and placed this bottle of medicine inside the cabinet with the other two bottles. Every full moon night, Sebastian would lock himself in his office, and this time was no different. He would surely drink this bottle of medicine.
