Daniel moved through the house toward the office, where he instinctively knew he would find Tess. She seemed to spend more and more time in her office, which doubled as a den of the occult. Her hair was loose, the graying curtain falling over her back and shoulders like a shawl. There were crystals, polished stones, and chips of bone carved with runic symbols scattered across the desk top. She had also flipped over a series of well-worn tarot cards across the surface, and she stared at them now, her brow furrowed in concentration.
