Jade’s POV
“Oh, am I?” Morgan stepped forward, her hand brushing past my suit, causing me to weave them off.
“Do.Not.Touch.Me!” I seethed with my eyes shut.
“And what do you think you are?!” Morgan questioned, something that seemed like mockery settled on her face.
I clenched my fist, stepping forward, refusing to back down.
“I'm someone whom you broke and forced to become as strong as you are, Morgan,” I answered with all sincerity and clarity.
“So if you know what's best for you…” I moved closer, closing the gap between us, my eyes all scary and red. “...I would advise you not to play this game. Go back home to daddy, and act like his little girl.”
I wasn't done talking when she raised her hand in an attempt to slap me, but I was quick to hold them in the air, yanking them off.
Picking her hand and twisting it to her back, she whimpered in pain, almost crashing to the floor with her heels trying to do the balance.
I forgot to say I also learned self-defence and how to use a gun in case things get tough. Outside there I look like a girly girl who doesn't know one thing about a fight.
But five years ago, when I was forced to defend myself and was also on the run, I knew the need to be able to defend oneself in the midst of adversaries.
“You look so pitiful!” I spat, watching her crash to the ground while I paused over.
“You'll regret this, Jade!”
“Take her out!” Was the last command I issued to the guard I had met at the elevator, adding more firm instructions. “If you ever let someone like her into my company,” I paused, fuming internally with my eyes shut. “...I can guarantee you all a sack letter!”
“Yes, boss,” they chorused at once and swung into action.
John, on the other hand, kept begging all through the period we were in the elevator.
I knew I could not fire John within me, due to how useful he has been to me over the years. All I had to do was just calm down and sometimes threaten him with his job.
“Boss, please don't fire me. I have my wife–”
“I wasn't going to,” I replied, yanking my hair backward, making my way towards Aiden's school.
These days, he has complained that I don't even show up at his school. I've always been engrossed in work, so today that Morgan has successfully ruined it, I think I could just spend more time with my son.
“Something isn't right. That wristwatch, I've seen it before,” John said out loud while the rest of the guards helped me with the car door.
“Is there something you want to tell me before I leave?” I turned towards John, who was still trying to do more of some calculations to be sure he wasn't mistaken. So I knew when to stop.
“I saw the same wrist watch that was at the crime scene where you had an accident…”
“Wait!” I halted him, refraining him from speaking further. Adrenaline flushed through me, stopping me from hearing exactly what I've always imagined was the case.
“Are you thinking what I'm thinking?” John bent his neck, trying to analyze everything. Making me see some hypotheses that were about to become law.
“Are you telling me that the wristwatch you saw at the crime scene looks exactly like the one she’s wearing?” I repeated in shock.
“Exactly,” John affirmed.
“Look into it, and get back to me before dawn. Something’s fishy, and I must know what that is,” I commanded while the driver ushered me into the car.
“And, John…”
“Yes, boss.”
“Cancel any appointment for today, I need to spend some time with my son.”
“Yes, boss.”
Like that, the driver revved the car back to life while we spun along the wet road, my thoughts all scattered in my head.
All through the drive down to Aiden’s school, I cannot help but think about everything that has been happening around me. The accident, Silas showing up at my lowest moment.
Morgan's threats. Threats from my opposing partners, and many more…
My phone rang out almost immediately, jolting me out of my thoughts.
Raina.
“What’s up, girlfriend? Are you okay?” I questioned quickly, my heart racing faster than usual. I remembered Raina leaving my abode, saying everything would be fine. All she needed was a few guards from me.
“Yes, I’m fine. You don’t need to be scared, baby.” Raina answered from the other end.
“When are you leaving?” I chipped in, trying so hard not to sound a bit harsh.
I cannot bear it if anyone uses people around me against me, to fight me, or even to get to me. I cannot just take it. It’s okay if I’m the one being hurt, but not those people around me.
“Are you chasing me?”
“Raina, you cannot understand. I’m–”
“Just relax, baby girl. I’ll be leaving soon. I just came to spend the holidays with my bestfriend. It’s Christmas time, Jade. C’mon.”
“Let’s hit the club, huh?” Raina suggested, leaving me weak for a moment.
Just then, more threatening messages keep coming in. This wasn’t even about Silas anymore. This doesn’t seem like just one person was after me.
“I’ll go to the club,” I replied. I’m not going because she invited me, but because I knew something was going to happen to one of the people I love. And right now, I’m sure Raina will be next.
My son and I have been in an accident. Silas has been kidnapped. Raina will be the next target.
Soon, the driver arrived at Aiden’s school. And to my surprise, the person I saw walking out of the school was–
“Silas?” I spoke out of turn, causing him to halt on his track while turning to face me, with my son Aiden staring at him.
“Mom?”
“And what the heck are you doing here, Silas?” I shrieked, anger etched on my face.
