Jade’s POV
I blinked off multiple times, and I felt my stomach twist, a feeling that made me want to puke.
Right now, this young man disgusts me. So much…
And as for the slap, I had only imagined it. As I said earlier, I wouldn't allow myself to be known by the world for something bad. It's enough that the whole of New York knows our story already.
And right now, I don't even want to reopen such wounds.
My gaze fell on his hand, which was holding mine tighter, and quickly he took them off as my skin had burned him.
“I’m sorry,” he stuttered while I managed a smile. My mind is still fixed on my missing son, but I know better than to flinch. It's not going to fix anything. The best I could do is keep my calm.
“You are the CEO of Ardor?” One of the CEO’s behind me repeated, a smile plastered across his face.
I know I've done shitty things to most of them in the past. Just to make sure some contracts become mine.
It wasn't as if their ways were also pure. Most of them are hooligans, murderers…and they all have their darkest secrets which I uncover to make sure I win in the end.
And like that, I've been able to secure more contracts and make Ardor Enterprise thrive.
But today, Don Rosso seems to have blown that cover. So, I know better than to hide myself. It’s okay, I’m in the light now. I’m aware I’m about to get more enemies than before.
“It’s nice to meet you, officially.” One of the CEOs smiled at me, stretching out a hand for a shake, but I was quick to bow my head.
“So, I’ll be partnering with Miss Jade, as she has proven to be the strongest amongst all. Never in my twenty-one years of being a businessman have I ever seen a woman beat down every man in this game.” Don Rosso bowed, his eyes fixed on Jaxon, who stood beside me firmly.
“Thank you,” I managed a smile, my heart still with my missing son. I just hope my enemies have not started moving in silence now that they’ve learnt about me being the CEO. But, well, I never said I came back to New York to play games.
“Thanks, Mr. Don,”
“Sure,” he cut me off, offering me a handshake while cameras flashed in my face.
Files were exchanged, contracts signed, and like that, the party continued like everything was
okay.
By the time I looked behind me, Jaxon was gone. Without saying goodbye. Just like he did years back. Like how he disappeared on that plane years ago.
I would have loved to know where he went, but right now, I have pending things to attend to.
John, my Personal assistant, pushed through the door while I was still in the midst of signing the deals with Mr. Don Rosso’s firm, his eyes fixed on me.
I don’t need to ask him before I know he still couldn't find Aiden. It was then that I knew I must act fast. My son cannot be missing, and I’ll be here signing deals. It just doesn’t make any sense.
“Can I book an appointment with you to sign the rest of the papers? I have pending issues to attend to,” I turned to Mr. Don, waiting for his approval.
“Sure. We can do that over a meal.” He approved, while I managed to beam a smile before packing my gown and heading for the door.
For a second, I’ve forgotten all about Silas when he suddenly reached out to my hand in the midst of the people.
“John, hand him the papers,” I spoke between gritted teeth, yanking my hand off in anger, my breath unstable. Beads of sweat settled beneath my jaw, while I tried to refrain from overdoing things.
I watched him smile, checking the files one by one before finally halting. I bit on my lips, swallowing hard as John reached for the doorknob. “As of today onward, I’m breaking any bond we both shared. Here’s the divorce paper, sign it.”
My words were direct, sharp, and blunt. I didn’t even bat an eye while making that confession. I wasn’t ready to banter words as well. It was written on his face—the shock.
I’m sure he’s yet to recover from the shock earlier when he realised I was the CEO of Ardor. And now this?
“You are kidding, right?” I scoffed, his eyes darting from the file to me, and then surveying the room to be sure no one was listening. Well, he was lucky because everyone seemed to be making connections with one another. So they could hardly focus on us.
“You are breaking up with me?” he repeated, his eyes widened in shock, a smile smeared across his lips. I could see the unbelief in his eyes.
Apparently, Morgan isn’t here. It’s not like I cared, though, because I wasn’t ready to banter words with that witch.
“You heard me. I don’t like repeating my words twice.” I flinched, my eyes filled with bitterness and hatred, one I couldn’t explain to myself.
“You cannot divorce me. You don’t have the power to…I mean, c’mon. If I don’t sign the divorce papers—okay fine,” he heaved a sigh, seeing he was already drawing much attention to himself.
“Is this about what happened years ago? Jade, you ran off from the hospital. I was trying to look for you—”
“So you can kill me? Frame it up, and marry my stepsister like you’ve always wanted to?” I lashed back, clenching my fist, my toes curling in my heels.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” He scoffed, denying every one of my words. I’m sure he never knew I was awake all through the period he was f*****g my stepsister right in the hospital.
“I’m not going to sign this,” he snapped, finally getting the attention of people, causing the music to stop abruptly, and everyone now staring in our direction.
Scattering the papers in my face, he seethed in anger. “You don’t get to discard me like that, Jade Steele.”
I scoffed in disbelief, my jaw tightened. “You discard me first. And I’m doing just the same. You’ll hear from my lawyers!”
