Chapter 16

Jade’s POV My legs wobbled beneath me immediately after the word “Marry” left Aiden’s lips. I signaled the guard to lead him to the car. “I’m sorry about that…he’s just a kid,” I apologised quickly, walking away, not knowing what else to say. I didn’t stay away from a man for five years to begin another miserable life in New York. I’m back again, bigger, and I’m never going to be that girl I was with any man. Not even Silas. “Will I see you again?” Jaxon shot back, but I wouldn’t even dare to look back. I don’t think I want to have anything to do with any man again—at least not now. “Drive,” I commanded the driver who revved the engine back to life, “I just called Mr. Williams. He’s on his way,” My personal assistant replied while I watched him roll up his sleeve to check his watch. “Okay,” was all I could say while I threw my head against the backseat. “Mommy, is everything okay?” Aiden broke the silence, seeing I was troubled. One very good thing Aiden takes after me is concern. He was good at noticing the slightest change in mood and the likes. That was what he did earlier while he saw me crying. This part of him was what Silas would never have—compassion! “How about we eat some chicken and sauce with ice cream while we keep quiet?” I winked at him while he nodded. His tiny little hand reached for the rest of the food while he shaded it amongst the guards. I feel at ease, knowing fully well that Aiden is going to grow into a fine young man who is capable of taking up my company in years to come. Watching him eat the chicken with no worries made me calm and relaxed. But I know he would surely request his father again. And this time around…I will pronounce Silas dead. After a few hours of driving, knowing fully well that Aiden was now fast asleep, I broke the silence. “John, what about the divorce papers I asked you to get from my lawyer?” He went silent for a while, searching through the brown files he was holding before finally bringing them out. “Here, ma’am.” He handed it over quickly. I wasted no time in reading through the whole cons and pros to be sure he had done the right thing. I heaved a sigh, trying so hard not to shed a single tear. Aiden will finally get to see his dad but never would I allow my boy to be identified with such a monster. “When is my lawyer coming down to New York? I need it to be done as soon as possible. I've got no time to waste.” I snapped, carefully putting back the files where they belonged and handing them over to John. “He has an appointment with one of his clients by 2pm today. He said he will be with us shortly.” He replied, showing me the last message my lawyer had sent to his tablet. “Good,” I nodded before adding more instructions. “Keep an eye on my son. And provide him with anything he wants. Is that clear?” “Yes, boss.” “We are here already,” the driver announced. I had asked him to stop at one of the boutiques earlier. And the funniest part was that the boutique was the exact one I had run into five years ago and they had blown my cover. But this time around, I'm entering not as a fugitive but as a free woman. “Pick this,” I commanded the store staff, but she wouldn't budge. By the time I took a look at her face, a scoff left my lips. My legs faltered while I stiffened. “It’s you,” I said aloud. Trying to convince myself to be sure while letting out a scoff. “Pick this?” She repeated afterwards, sounding so rude and proud. That's just like her. The woman who handed me a pair of jeans and shorts also told her friend to disclose my location to the police. “Do you think this place is your regular?” She lashed back, staring at me meanly. I wouldn't blame her. I had dressed casually. Just my normal coat for the cold season. Anyone would have thought I truly was an ordinary civilian. “I don't have time for this. Pack everything,” I instructed, stretching my card towards her almost immediately before she threw another tantrum. Her hand stiffened for a moment, fear visible in her eyes seeing the card I had pulled out. It wasn't the regular. It is used by only the wealthiest in the country. This…had sent her trembling. “Consider yourself fired!” I smirked while she pleaded, but I was way past that. The only thing on my mind was to divorce that riff raff and clear anyone who tries to stand in my way to success. Even if the person is my father. I walked out of the boutique fulfilled, happy, and refreshed in my new designer wear. It feels good to allow people to have a taste of their medicine. Revenge is sweet when people think you are still on the same pathetic level they had left you. The more I remember her face while she was pleading, the happier I got. “Shall we?” I turned to the driver and the rest of the guards. It didn't take more than twenty minutes when we arrived at the venue. Don Rosso is one of the biggest firms we will ever partner with. We really needed them. And since I know other companies and their representatives will be here, I intended to look more than pretty. “Aiden, stay with the guards. I'll be right back.” I pleaded right after I was done adjusting my hair. But upon getting to the entrance, the first person I ran into face-to-face was no other person than Silas. And…Morgan, my evil stepsister. “Hello sister,” she smirked, whirling her hand around Silas’s arm.
