Zoey’s POV
“Joey!” Chloey cried, dropping next to her.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I screamed, shoving Jade as Director Magnus ran to come help us.
“What is going on?”
Jade turned her attention to him, raising the knife and swiping down. He just barely dodged it.
“Jade, stop this!” He demanded.
She didn't listen. It was like she was possessed. Director Magnus continued dodging swipes from the knife.
“Director Magnus!” Tate’s voice called, hurrying over. I figured he could handle this.
I got down on the ground. Joey was bleeding profusely and her eyes were blood red. While she wasn't moving she was muttering. I think Jade had a cursed blade.
Simone had run to get more help while Tate and Director Magnus were still fighting off Jade. I think they were afraid of hurting her.
I wasn't.
“We have to stop her!” I said desperately.
Suddenly I felt power surging through my veins. It was like electricity. My hand shot out as did Chloey’s. Joey shot up with her hand out. Blue lightning flew out of our hands straight to Jade. She flew back and hit the barrier before falling to the ground in a heap.
We all gasped as the blue lightning stopped. Joey fell back to the ground. She was no longer muttering, just bleeding.
“Someone help!” I screamed.
People were surrounding us now. They looked afraid and shocked. But it wasn't directed towards Jade, it was directed towards us.
***
Joey wouldn't wake up. We had gotten her to the school’s Infirmary. The venom from the blade hadn't fully infiltrated her blood, but a second later would have been too late.
Jade on the other hand was in a coma. She had been put under a very dark spell. One that warped her mind completely. While not many people liked her, everyone admitted she wouldn't hurt anyone.
Who would do that to her? And why would they do it? Was their goal to hurt Joey?
Joey’s room was filled with a bunch of different flowers from a bunch of different boys. She sure had already made an impact here.
When Monday rolled around again, Chloey and I had to force ourselves to leave her.
I felt better seeing Tate waiting for me.
“Hey,” I smiled. “I missed you.”
“Yeah, um you too.” He rubbed his head.
“So, um how did it go with Raina?”
“That's exactly what I wanted to talk to you about-”
“There you are baby!” Raina hurried over and kissed him.
What the hell?
“Oh, Zoey, how are you? Is Joey gonna be okay?” She asked as though she cared.
“Um, we’ll have to see.” I mumbled. “But uh you two seem good.”
“We’re amazing. We had a really good talk yesterday.” Raina grinned.
“That's good.”
“I'm going to breakfast, coming Tate?”
“Just a second babe.” He forced a smile.
She kissed him again before walking away.
“So you didn't break up with her.” I whispered.
“I'm sorry, Zoey, I couldn't! B-but I will!”
“Don't bother. You were drunk. I'm sure you didn't mean what you said. I’ll see you later.”
I stalked off cursing myself for being so stupid and thinking that Tate Highmore could really like me.
Chloey’s POV
People were whispering about us.
I felt like a walking attraction. Everyone had seen what me and my sisters had done to Jade and I think they were kind of scared of us.
I was scared too. Our powers had never synched up like that. I had never seen that blue light before. Joey was cursed and she was still using the power too. What did it all mean?
I wish there were clear answers to our powers and how they worked. Maybe when Joey woke up we could find some.
***
Joey looked so peaceful. She had a pretty nasty scar on her chest that we weren't sure would go away. I knew it still wouldn't stop her from wearing low cut things.
There was a knock on the door. I looked up and saw Marsden. He had been by several times.
“How is she?” He asked.
“No improvement. I just want her to wake up.” I sighed.
“Yeah me too. Kinda miss her.”
“She's really mad at you.”
“Yeah, I know. I f****d up really bad.” He mumbled. “Any advice?”
“Be nicer to her.” I suggested.
“I mean to get her to forgive me.”
“Make her laugh.”
“Okay. Thanks Chloey.” He smiled slightly.
There was another knock. This time it was Rune.
“Oh. Hey, just wanted to check on you, Chloey.”
“I was leaving anyway. Let me know when she wakes up?” Marsden asked. I nodded.
He slumped out of the room.
“Wow, he really cares about your sister.” Rune said sting next to me.
“Seems to.”
“How are you?”
“Terrified. Joey has never been so quiet. I hate it.” I whispered.
“I'm sure she’ll be fine. That girl’s a fighter.” Rune chuckled. “Um...how did you guys do that to Jade?”
“I have no idea. Our powers are so strange sometimes. I think Zoey and I were really scared and Joey somehow felt that through the curse. But nothing like that has ever happened. I'm sure everyone thinks we're freaks.”
“I don't.” Rune offered. “I think it was amazing. I mean you saved the Director’s life. Jade might have killed him.”
“Feels horrible to say, but I didn't even care about him. I just wanted my sister to be okay.” I admitted.
“She is because of you,” He grabbed my hand. “You were incredible.”
I felt a tingle through my body. I think it's what people feel when they realize they want to kiss someone. I think Rune felt it too. We were leaning in to kiss each other.
I was so scared and nervous! What if I didn't do it right?
A scream caused us to break apart before our lips could touch.
Joey sat up and was clutching her chest as gasps escaped her.
“Chloey?” She whispered. “I think I died.”
Joey’s POV
Coming back from the dead was strange.
After Jade attacked me I was quickly on my way to death. I was practically there until I felt my sisters pulling me back. Calling for me to return to them. So I did.
My chest was in pain and I didn't feel great, but I was happy to be alive.
I of course felt bad that I had ruined Chloey and Rune’s almost kiss, but I was sure it would happen again without me returning from death.
I had to stay in the Infirmary so they could make sure there wasn't any lingering venom. I was kind of over this whole mess, to be honest.
The door opened and Marsden walked in with flowers.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“Chloey told me you were awake. I wanted to see you.”
“Shocked you’re not with Jade.”
“She’s in a coma. No point in seeing her.” Marsden joked. “She won’t even know I’m there.”
I wanted to laugh. That was pretty funny, but I couldn’t give him the satisfaction. I was still angry. “Get out Marsden.”
“Joey, babe, please. I-I’m sorry for how I acted that night. I was way out of line and I feel like what happened to you was completely my fault.”
“Because your girlfriend attacked me?”
“She’s not my girlfriend! I don’t even care about Jade!”
“You cared enough to ruin our date! We were supposed have s*x and you acted like that meant nothing! But you know what, I have to thank you. You reminded me why I don’t get serious with guys.” I said.
“Joey, you have no idea how sorry I am.”
“You have no idea how much I don’t care.”
“Knock, knock.” I was shocked to see Bryce entering the room with three bouquets of flowers. “Hey, babe.”
“Bryce, what are you doing here?” I asked.
“I used to be a part of Director Magnus’s group. He let me come see you. But you seem occupied.”
“I’m not. Marsden leave.”
“I was here first!” He protested.
“Yeah, well I can talk to you any time. So go.” I stated.
Marsden set the flowers down and left.
“Your legs look better.” I smiled at Bryce.
“Yeah, he’s an asshole, but damn was that a good curse.” Bryce laughed. “How are you doing?”
“Fine. I just want to get out of here.”
“I hate being bed ridden. Though there are certain perks.” He leaned down and kissed me. “I’ve been thinking about you so much.”
“I would say the same, but I was sleeping a lot.” I giggled. “Maybe we should go out some time?”
“I’d love that, but the season is about to start. I’m gonna be crazy busy until after the New Interval.” Bryce groaned. “Of course I meet someone like you and then I have to go.”
I found his honesty refreshing. “It’s okay. We’ve already had some fun.”
“I’m going to see you before I go, I swear.”
“How?”
“You’ll see.”
***
“Hey wait up!” I turned and saw Tate.
“You know I’m not Zoey right?” I asked.
“Yeah, I know the difference.”
“So you know which triplet you kissed.” Tate looked taken aback. “Yeah, triplets tell each other everything. What’s up?”
“Are you dating Marsden Thorton?” He questioned.
“Kind of...I don’t know. Why?”
“Did you guys fight the night of your attack?” I nodded. “About what?”
“He ruined our date by flirting with Jade. And then I danced with Bryce Vossen and that made him pretty mad.”
“And then Jade attacked you.”
“Yeah, but she was cursed.” I reminded him.
“Do you think Marsden could have done it?”
“What? No. Marsden is a lot of things, but he wouldn’t hurt me.”
“Well, I think Director Magnus was the real target. That Jade couldn’t get through the barrier because of the curse and so she needed Director Magnus to come past it.”
“What does that have to do with Marsden?” I asked.
“Joey, he’s not a good guy. He hates Director Magnus.”
“That doesn’t mean he sent Jade to murder him! Look, I’m not Marsden’s biggest fan right now, but he’s not behind this, I swear. I know you have a rivalry, but this is a crazy accusation, Tate.”
Tate nodded. “Yeah, you’re probably right. Yeah, that’s crazy. Well, I’m glad you’re feeling better...um could you tell your sister to talk to me?”
“I’ll try. But next time you kiss her, make sure you don’t have a girlfriend.”
***
Marsden was hounding me like crazy! I still wasn’t ready to talk to him. I couldn’t let him sweet talk me. He needed to suffer a little longer.
There was a knock on my door one night. I opened it, sure it was Marsden, but it was Bryce.
I pulled him in quickly. “You’re not supposed to be here!”
“I came for you.” A grin came across his face.
His hand quickly wrapped around my throat and pinned me against the wall.
Why does everyone want to kill me?
