“Defend the Queen!” Borg roared as he moved into the library where Everly had been quietly reading.
“Borg, whatever is the matter?” Everly asked.
“My Queen, the target tonight was not the Fae castle, it was our own. The vampires have amassed at the front, we must move you into the mines.”
Everly stared at Borg for a moment, then got up quickly setting her book aside and followed Borg.
“It is hot and dirty my Queen, but it is the safest place for you right now.” Borg apologised.
“Borg, why are they here?” Everly asked.
“Isabella.” Borg snorted. “I will take you to safety and then I will address them.”
Borg took Everly as deep into the mines as he could. It was terribly hot and Everly was feeling lightheaded.
“Please my Queen, it will be easier for us to fight knowing you are here and safe. Please do not move, no matter what.”
Everly nodded and crouched down behind a pile of rocks.
Borg returned to the front of the castle and climbed his way up to the turrets. This castle had withstood hundreds of attacks over thousands of years. He was confident the vampires would not breach its walls.
“What business do you have with my King?” Borg roared from the turret.
“We have come for Isabella.” Eva roared back.
Borg laughed, a loud, gravelly laugh.
“Is that the False Luna I see? What business do you have with Isabella False Luna?” Borg asked.
“You will return Isabella to me immediately!” Eva screamed. She had had enough of this False Luna rubbish.
“Or what? You will stamp your feet and screech? False Luna, I am afraid you will need to return home empty handed. I cannot open Isabella’s cell without the use of magic. It requires two of the magical folk who imprisoned her to open that door.” Borg replied. His eyes immediately widened as he realised his mistake. He had just told the vampire army that there were not two magical folk in the castle to help repel them.
He saw a young man lean in and speak to Eva and then one of the older vampires, the Generals, stepped forward and also spoke to Eva. Borg saw her nod her head and then look to the turret again.
“So, you do not have two magical folk in the castle? Lucky for you I have two here!” He swore he could see her smirk from his vantage point in the turret.
The man Eva had spoken to earlier, and a young woman stood out in front of the group. They raised their hands in front of them, lightening flitting between their fingers. Borg mind linked his King.
“My King, I have hidden my Queen in the mines, as deep as they will go. We will try to hold them off as long as we can.”
“Borg, we are coming man. Hold them off as long as you can!” Jaime replied.
Borg looked out at the vampire army. The lightening was now arcing over their heads as it grew. Without warning they both threw the lightening at the turret, leaving it utterly destroyed.
“Can you sense Isabella?” Eva called out to Sergio and Valentina. They closed their eyes, probing the walls.
“There is a magical signature at that window. It is infused into the walls. That has to be where she is.” Valentina called out, pointing to a window. She began to build the energy again until it arced overhead. She pulled her arm back, pushing it towards the window. The wall caved but it did not do the damage that the two of them combined had done to the turret.
Isabella stood at the open wall, watching. The magic that had prevented her using her own was no longer there. She stepped out onto thin air and walked her way down like she was on an invisible staircase.
“Welcome back.” Eva smiled as Isabella stood in front of her.
“Very impressive.” Isabella murmured looking Sergio up and down. “Please don’t let me stop you. The Queen is in those walls somewhere. She once took something from me and I would so like to return the favour.”
Sergio nodded and raised his hands, the lightening intensifying between his fingers.
He pulled his hand back and propelled the lightening ball at the walls which crumbled at the blast site.
Isabella ran her fingertips up Sergio’s muscled arms. Her face inched closer to his as she whispered, “Let’s see what you can do.” Seductively in his ear.
Sergio looked at Valentina and nodded. They both began raining lightening ball after lightening ball down on the castle’s walls.
Once a clear doorway was evident, they began to walk towards the castle.
“Find the Queen!” Eva roared.
What was left of the Dwarven army rushed in to fill the void in the wall. They looked on at the army moving towards them and they knew they didn’t stand a chance. Some quickly linked their partners to say their goodbyes.
The vampires moved closer; their facial features now clearly defined in the moons light.
“For King Jaime and the Realm!” One of them roared as the vampires marched on.
As they prepared to attack portals began to open on the land in front of the castle and the army could see werewolves run through and begin to attack the vampires.
“NO PRISONERS!!” The Dwarven guard yelled as they ran forward. Portals were now appearing on both sides of the vampire army and warriors from the Fae, The Elves, The Werewolves and the Dwarves rushed through. Sergio and Valentina turned their attention to the portals, attempting to close them to prevent the warriors spilling through. Vampires were pushing their way through the breach in the wall to find the Queen.
Jaime had been portalled straight into the mines and the portal immediately closed. He ran through the piles of rubble towards the back of the mine. Borg had said he had taken Everly back as far as he could into the mine. Jaime continued running until he reached the new area being dug out.
“Everly?” He whispered.
“Oh, thank the Goddess.” Everly whispered, breaking down into silent sobs.
“It’s ok lass, no vampire will get past me. Where’s Borg?” Jaime asked.
“I don’t know, he brought me here and then ran off. He said I would be safe.”
“Aye lass, it is our way to bring the women and children to the mines and defend them if the castle is ever breached.” Jaime smiled.
“Do you need to go and fight?” Everly asked.
“I do Lass, my men need to see me out there.” Jaime replied, holding Everly close. “Nothing will happen to you here though.” He added.
“And what about you?” Everly whispered.
“A King needs to defend his castle.” Jaime shrugged.
“But with no heir?” Everly sniffed as tears fell freely down her face.
Jaime stopped and looked at her. “Well Lass, that’s something we best remedy soon.”
He bent down to kiss his queen and ran off back into the fight.
The sight that he returned to was staggering. The castle was full of beings from wall to wall. They could barely fight because there simply wasn’t the room. He raised his sword, removing heads from the vampires’ bodies. It had been made clear that they were to look out for the white strips of material, but it was impossible. The castle had descended into mayhem.
Jaime moved forward towards a group of young vampires cowering under a table. He bent down to check and see if they had the strips of white. They did and he waved them towards him.
“This way young ones, I’ll take you to safety.” Jaime whispered as they followed him out and through a doorway. He opened a great door at the end of a hallway and a blast of heat hit them.
“I’m sorry it wont be comfortable but it will be safe.” He shrugged as the vampires ran through the door. “Just stay down.”
The vampires nodded running further back into the mine.
Jaime turned and ran down the hallway, returning to the fight. He mind linked his people.
“Send the young ones with the white material into the mines.” He said as his sword removed a vampires head from its shoulders.
He raced to the front looking for Ailwyn and Robert. He saw their horses being chased by some of the vampires. He looked around and grabbed the nearest warrior. “Where are the kings?” He roared.
“I don’t know sir, they were on their horses in the fight!”
Jaime continued to look around and spotted Lachlan and Todd in their wolf forms, working together to tear their way through the tide of vampires. It was then he spotted Isabella with Sergio, Valentina and Eva. Isabella spotted him and waved, smiling. She then turned and opened a portal, ushering the other three through before closing it behind her.
There was something unnerving about Isabella’s confidence. Something wasn’t right. Jaime turned back towards the castle. He still couldn’t find Robert or Ailwyn.
“Everly!”
Jaime ran faster than he had ever ran in his life, fighting his way through throng of attacking vampires and bodies piling up. He found the hallway and ran down to the now open door. He raced in to Everly’s screaming.
He ran through the mine to the back where he had left Everly. She should be safe.
There were beings standing over where he had left her. He ran in, swinging his sword and taking their heads. They had white bands around their arms, what was going on?
One of the vampires turned on Jaime laughing. “Did you think we would never realise what was going on? Do you think us stupid?”
Jaime desperately looked around for Everly but all he could see was a pile of bodies. Every one of the vampires had a white armband. Jaime had no choice, he continued to swing at the vampires standing over the bodies. As he swung his sword, one of the vampires came from behind and tore at his throat. Jaime tried to scream for help but only a gurgling sound came out. He dropped to the ground, the fight gone from his body, the light fading from his eyes. As he looked at the pile of bodies he saw a hand that stuck out from the others. It was not the pastey white of the vampires. He reached out and grasped it, intertwining his fingers with hers. Everly, somehow she was still alive. His last thought before he lost consciousness. “Where is Borg?”
