Chapter 3

After the two shots and beer, I was feeling pretty good. I was finally in the moment and stopped dwelling on the past, at least for the night. "How's work?" I asked Candice, shouting slightly over the music as we people watched from a booth in the corner. There were some people on the dance floor, but I was definitely not drunk enough for that. No one wants to see a tall white girl who can't dance out there. "Forget about that. I wanna know who you slept with, hoping Trevor would find out. Is it someone I know? Was it any good?" I had almost forgotten I never told her all the details. That was something I never admitted to during the divorce process, so he couldn't use it against me in any way. I felt my cheeks turn red. "You probably know him. He was my "boyfriend" in like seventh or eighth grade." I could see her thinking. Honestly, I was hoping she wouldn't remember. I didn't want her to make a whole thing out of it and try to set me up with him or something. "You kind of, quote, unquote, dated a new boy every few weeks in junior high. I mean, we all did, but I can't remember them all," she said, laughing. "Do you remember Tommy?" Her eyes went wide when I said his name. He went to a different high school than us, but he always came to the games when I played against his school and Candice would notice him there. I did too. Even when I was on the bench or between innings, I'd look in his direction and he never took his eyes off me. "Was it any good?" she asked, moving her eyebrows up and down. Again, I could feel my cheeks heating, but if I couldn't tell her, then who could I tell? "So good," I said before we both burst out laughing. "Honestly, ten times better than s*x with Trevor ever was. I honestly didn't know how intense an orgasm could be until Tommy," I told her before covering my mouth, not believing I just admitted that out loud. "Well, I'm proud of you. And now that you know what you've been missing, let's get you laid!" she said enthusiastically before scanning the crowd. "Oh my God. No, Candice! I'm not ready for that. I knew Tommy and was comfortable with him. Plus he knew the situation, and now he's gone, so...." She gave me a smile, which told me she was joking and would drop it. For now at least. I know her too well to believe she won't be trying to hook me up with someone soon enough. "Seriously, how's work going?" I asked her, changing to topic. She rolled her eyes before answering. "Honestly, I'm so over it. Who knew grown ass women would cause more drama than girls in high school? It's a daily reminder of why I don't have many girlfriends and always get along better with guys." I laughed, but she's right. Women are always causing drama with other women. That's why it's always been just me and her. She works in a dental office, which is basically all women. There is one girl there about our age that she thought was cool, so she invited her out with us one night to dinner about a month ago. Needless to say, that didn't work out. All she did was gossip about the other women from the office at dinner and, the next day, gossiped about me and Candice the next day at work. So it's back to just us. That's how we like it anyway. "Totally know what you mean. My store manager causes the majority of the drama at the store. She picks a fight with all the younger guys who work with us who stock the shelves. When it's just me and them, they work great, but when she is around, the tension in the air is palpable. They walk on eggshells around her. She likes to point out the smallest things they do wrong and stick their noses in it. I don't get it, and if I were them, I wouldn't be working for her much longer. Hell, I wish I wasn't working there, but I need the money." "Glad you see it too," I heard a male voice say. Candice and I looked in the direction it came from and saw a tan, tall guy with dark brown hair and brown eyes. I instantly laughed. This was one of the guys my boss doesn't treat so nicely that I think does a great job. Behind him was his best friend who also works with us. "Hey Dom. BJ. Whatever you guys just heard doesn't leave this bar," I told them with a series look. I didn't have to worry about them saying anything. They hated our boss, so who are they going to say anything to? They both zipped their lips shut in unison before throwing away the imaginary key. "What are you guys doing here?" They looked at each other before Dom replied. "We're twenty-two. What do you think we're doing here?" I've been out of the game for so long, I didn't know if that was some kind of come on or if they were just answering my question, so I just let it be. "Would you like to sit?" I asked before scooting in. Candice did the same on her side of the booth. They sat, and we talked about anything and everything for a while. At some point, my divorce being finalized came up. Why and how, I don't know, but that definitely called for another drink. "I'm gonna go to the bar. Does anyone need anything?" Candice raised her beer, and I nodded to her. BJ was sitting next to me and moved out so I could get up. "I'll come with you," I heard him say as I started making my way over to the bar. I ordered two more beers for Candice and me, while BJ ordered his and Dom's drinks. When the beers were placed in front of me, the guy on my other side grabbed one and lifted it straight to his lips, taking a long swig of it. When he finally let it drop from his mouth, he had a smug smile on his face. "Thanks for the drink, doll." I just looked on in total shock. When nothing else was said, and he began to turn around to walk away, I shouted out, "I wouldn't buy you a drink if you were the only guy in here."
