Getting back to school today was a little awkward since I constantly had to remind myself to act like someone recovering from an illness. I don’t know who spread the news about me being sick to the entire school, but everyone kept stopping me to ask if I feel better. This is so not the type of attention I like.
Miller tried talking to me today and words can not explain the amount of satisfaction I felt when I walked away from him without giving him a second glance.
Someone hasn’t figured out that he has nothing on me yet.
“Hey you.” Maya said cheerfully blocking my way.
“Hi. I haven’t seen you since I got to school. Almost thought you skipped.” I said to her.
“I’m a good kid, my type don’t skip.” She said sarcastically. “Do you feel better though? I heard you were ill.”
“Yeah I’m better. It was just a cold.” I said putting up my best fake smile.
“Come on, let’s go get lunch, the boys are waiting for us already.” She said pulling me along with her.

“Anyone’s got winter plans?” Jeff asked as we settled into our various seats at the lunch table.
“Not me. My parents usually enjoy doing the whole family bonding thing since winter and Christmas sync.” Cole said.
“Same here.” Replied Maya.
“What about you?” Jeff asked directing the question at me.
“I’m traveling to Oakland with my mum.” I replied with a small smile.
“Oh that’s cool. Going back home to meet your dad and the rest of the family yeah?” Cole asked.
I tried my best not to give anything away but I guess I failed at it because I could see the look of horror in the eyes of everyone on the table.
The look of regret on Cole’s face was evident.
“Oh my God! Kim I am terribly sorry. I shouldn’t have gone forward to make such an assumption especially since you barely talk about your dad. I’m really sorry.” He rumbled.
“It’s okay. My dad passed away two years ago. I don’t talk about it much but it’s not really a sensitive topic anymore.” I said with a shrug.
I hated people giving me the pitiful look and condolence greetings because those actually never really helped. That was my actual reason for not talking about it often. And also because the way my father passed away was not a natural and peaceful course.
“Either way I’m still sorry. I need to learn how to control my big mouth.” Cole said.
“Yeah you really need to learn that.” Maya teased earning her a glare from Cole while the rest of us just chuckled.
“What about you Damon, any plans?” I asked, trying to change the topic and put the spotlight on someone else.
“When did you became so concerned with my plans?” Damon asked looking up from his lunch plate.
“Don’t give yourself so much credit, I’m just helping Jeff out with his question.” I said passively.
“I and my family are going on one of my father’s surprise vacations.” He said flatly.
I got my hopes high after what happened between Damon and I yesterday, but I guess that’s all it was, high hopes. Damon has been giving me the cold shoulder or acting like an egotistical asshole to me the whole day.
“Good for you.” I said returning his cold energy back to him. “What about you Jeff?” I asked him with a smile. He was so adorable.
“My dad has a cabin not far away from here, I was thinking we could all go chill there for a few days during the winter break but since you and Damon have plans, I guess it’ll just be Cole, Maya and I.” He replied.
“Like the three musketeers?” Maya asked her eyes shining with the excitement of a child.
“Yes Maya, like the three musketeers.” Jeff said ruffling her hair.
Both of them burst into fits of laughter, they looked so adorable, however, when I looked to my left, I saw Cole observing them both with a ‘not so happy’ look. I was yet to ask him about what’s up with him and Maya, but from the look on his face, it was obvious someone was crushing.
We went back to random talk and not long after, the bell for the end of lunch break went.
“Kim.” I heard someone call me and I turned back.
Big mistake, I turned to be greeted by the annoying face of no one but Miller himself.
“f**k off.” I said and started walking away, but Miller grabbed me by the arm and pulled me closer to him. “Leave me alone. What the f**k is your problem?!” I said trying to pull away from him.
“It seems you have forgotten who you’re talking to.” Miller said moving closer to me in a manner that was meant to be intimidating.
Was anyone going to tell him that he looked ridiculous. He was walking like someone needing to take a s**t urgently.
“What’s so funny?” He said angrily pressing my arm hard. I had no idea I giggled out loud.
“Miller let go of my arm.” I said in a warning tone.
“If not what?” He asked pressing harder.
“Let go or you’ll regret this.” I said trying my best to keep my tone cool. I was mad.
“No can do.” He said and applied even more force on my arm.
I didn’t think twice before stepping on his foot and kicking him in the balls.
“Ouch. You bitch.” He screamed.
I did not risk waiting for him to recover before I ran away from the corner he had pulled me to.
“Oow.” I said rubbing my nose. I wasn’t where I was going and ran into someone.
“Where were you?” The certain someone I ran into who just happened to be Damon asked.
Curse my luck.
“None of your busi-“ I wasn’t able to finish my sentence because someone pulled my arm harshly.
“f*****g b***h, you think you can get away with that.” Miller said angrily.
“You ever tried what you just did with her or any girl again and I swear to God...” Damon said pulling me away from Miller and blocking him from reaching me.
I didn’t exactly need saving but okay, I’ll take the help.
“Stay out of this man.” Miller said trying to bypass Damon.
“I will not bother warning you again. Stay away from her.” Damon said menacingly as he held Miller by his collar.
As soon as Damon released Miller, he walked away of course not without glaring at me and reminding me that this was not over.
“Are you okay?” Damon asked turning to me with a concerned look.
I simply nodded in response.
“Thank you.” I said to Damon. He may act like a jerk but what he did was kind and I was going to be the bigger person.
“No need to. I wasn’t doing you a special favor. I’m just tired of his antics.” Damon said dismissively and walked away without sparing me a second glance.
And just when I was beginning to read between the lines, he poured yet another bucket of ice.
Asshole.
