Culprit

“No…No…Impossible,” Prince Charlse mumbled in disbelief. “My Cecilia would never try to kill anyone. She would never,” he added, tears finally flowing down his cheeks. All along, the hunger for revenge was what kept him together. Now it seemed Lola was right to kill his sweetheart. He frantically shook his head. “Cecilia had no reason to kill the Duke. None,” he mumbled right when Prince Ronald walked in. “Unless she was trying to get you the throne, Brother,” Prince Ronald said with a smug. “What?” Prince Charles asked, suddenly dawning to him what the implications of his brother’s allegations were. He turned to the king while shaking his head. “No, brother, you know me. I would never try to kill you. I don’t want your throne. I never did. Please believe me,” he pleaded. It was common knowledge that an attack on Shane was indirectly an attack on the king. Lola had made it clear that she would kill anyone who tried to kill her husband. He was now a suspect. He also knew that brother did not take kindly to threats on his life. “Excuse me. I have to talk to the Dutchess,” the king said already hurrying out with his wife behind him. He was informed that medical personnel had arrived to take Shane away a few minutes ago. He was angry at the time that Lola was disobeying him, and Melisa was letting her, but things had changed. Lola seemed to be the only one who could sense hidden dangers. He needed her in Harpoon if he was to live. “I believe you, Charlse,” Prince Ronald said while secretly rolling his eyes. “This Mokay is unstable. She is very capable. Who is to say that she did not fake that syringe? Everyone here knows that Cecelia would not hurt a fly, let alone the Duke,” he added, already on plan D. It was apparent to him that he needed to get rid of Lola first if he was to succeed in getting his brother’s throne. It was also no secret that the king was not as vigilant with Prince Chalse as he was with the rest of his siblings. His grief-stricken younger brother might just be his key to acquiring everything he ever wanted. “Who is to say that this was not one of your ploys?” Prince Charlse snapped. His older brother was a cunning snake. Even in his grief he knew that. Prince Ronald left disappointed. His brother was not as easy to manipulate as he expected, but he had more tricks on his sleeve. Getting the throne, he would. Lola had her eyes glued on Shane when the king and queen walked in again. “You were right. Cecelia was here to kill Shane. The syringe had cyanide. He would have died immediately. I am sorry for doubting you.” Lola still did not turn to look at King Dante as he spoke, nor did she acknowledge his very rare apology. “I was wrong and jumped into conclusions. It will never happen again. Please do not leave. I need you here,” the king pleaded, but Lola’s priority was Shane. “Apology accepted, but I can’t stay here. Shane is not safe here. We are leaving,” she said decisively until Melisa jumped in. “Honey, Shane took his duty to the throne serious. He would gladly die for the king. He would want you to stay here and help the king eliminate the threat.” Lola shook her head. “Shane would not be on this bed fighting for his life had we not come here. He would be safe and well and…” “And he knew it, yet he came and stayed. Staying here and helping the king is how you can honor Shane,” Melisa interjected. She now knew that Lola would do anything for Shane. “I know that you are scared of anything happening to him. I am too, but this is how he chose to live his life. The medical personnel we flew in will double check everything he gets from now on. We can stay here. You can protect him and help the king find the person or people behind all this,” Melisa urged until Lola agreed. She did want to find the people responsible and being in Harpoon would give her access to the evidence collected on both scenes. An hour later, Lola met with Prince Charlse despite Melisa’s advice not to. “You are angry, and you want revenge. I know the feeling,” she told the grieving Prince. “I did not know her. She tried to kill Shane, and I killed her. I don’t regret saving my husband,” she continued while Prince Charlse winced at her words. “I am sorry for your loss. I am told that she was a good person. Someone took her mother hostage. Her body was found an hour ago. Cecilia was blackmailed to kill Shane and that person still killed her mother,” Lola informed him of their findings. Prince Charlse momentarily closed his eyes, all his questions getting answered. Cecelia would do anything for her mother. The person who blackmailed her knew it too. “I need you to help me find the person behind this. I will send you everything we have. You knew her better than anyone. You might pick what others missed.” Prince Charlse nodded. He was grateful that Lola did not suspect her, while many in the castle had already condemned him. He vowed to do everything in his power to find the person responsible. “Again, I am sorry for your loss,” Lola repeated before leaving him. “And?” Melisa asked the moment Lola walked in. She was so nervous and could not sit down the whole time she was away. “He is not responsible. He will help with the investigation.” The king let out a sigh. He knew that his brother was innocent. He was worried about him attempting to kill Lola, whom he was certain would not hesitate to defend herself. “Okay. We start with the security around here. It is embarrassingly lacking. My apartment back in Asherway is way safer,” Lola declared while the king shook his head, amused. Lola was not one to mince her words. “You are the Mokay, Dear. Do whatever it takes to sort it out,” Queen Mandy told her. Within hours, the castle was buzzing with activity. There were also rumors that Lola did not just kill Cecilia for attempting to kill Shane, but her mother too. That was Cecilia’s only family member. The Foster clans were now uneasy. It seemed that Lola meant it when she said she would wipe out the whole clan if anyone tried to kill her husband. King Dante was surprised when the Foster clans came before him, dragging Mike. “What is the meaning of this?” King Dante asked. “The Mokay gave us an order to find the person behind Duke Shane’s shooting,” Your Highness,” it was Sir Henry who spoke. “And Mike junior is the culprit?” the king asked while Sir Mike and his whole clan dropped on their knees.
