Cam had just come in from the yard. It was a miserable Maryland day at the end of the summer. The temperature was over ninety degrees with humidity around ninety percent. The dampness off Chesapeake Bay permeated the air and made it heavy. Moving was an effort. Even breathing caused everyone to sweat.
Despite the heat, Cam felt a small amount of self-satisfaction. Today, in the yard, she’d been with a group of women standing close to the far wall when someone produced a small amount of cocaine. Unlike other days when she’d been shielded from any transaction like that, she’d watched as three of the women had inhaled the powdery white stuff. And they’d known she was there, too.
