Evening came quick and Alyra went up to her room and started to write her letter to the Atwater.
Dear May and Ed,
I wished you could have been my parents from the start. You taught me so much that I could have ever imagine. You showed me kindness when others didn't. You opened up your hearts to a child that wasn't yours, and you gave me a loving and caring home.
I will never forget you both, but I need to leave. I wish I could tell you why, but I can't. Someday I will return and see you again, but for now I have to say goodbye, and that I love you both very much.
Sincerely,
Your daughter Alyra
Alyra said "goodnight" one more time to May and Ed, and gave them both a kiss and a hug for the very last time. She made her way to her room.
Ed and May soon followed, she waited for another hour, then she grabbed her pack sack and put the rest of her clothing and items in. She grabbed her letter and folded it in half, and placed it on the table. She looked back one more time at the kitchen with her letter and headed out the door.
She walked through the night until she hit the highway, and she began to hitch hike, a trucker picked her up, his name was Alex. A nice old man he got her as close as he could to Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. She told him she was supposed to meet her parents and family there, and that she was taking a bus to get to them until she got mugged, and lost all her tickets. He never questioned it further.
After Alex dropped her off to the nearest gas station, she still had a week before she got there. She got direction from the gas attendant to Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and she continued on.
Alyra finally woke up ChiChi and told her "we are a week away from Mt Baker, and that she was sorry she took so long to wake her up". ChiChi asked "how long was I asleep?" Alyra hesitated to answer the question then she told Chichi "its been a year and 3 months". ChiChi was speechless. Alyra said " I will explain when we get to Mt Baker". ChiChi agreed.
Alyra knew the Atwaters must be overwhelmed with grieve and pain, but she had leave.
After a week of hitch hiking and walking for miles they finally arrived at Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National forest.
