May made her way to the kitchen and started doing the dishes, Ed walked in and said "you know we can't keep her". and May said "why not? the government just going to put her in a foster home that probably be worst then the streets she been living". Ed said "her parents or family might be looking for her". May said "oh...really, then why did we find her like we did? Any decent mother would be out looking for her child not letting her starve on the streets".
Ed just shook his head, and said "tomorrow asked Alyra more questions about where she comes from, and who are her parents, then we will go from there". May said "fine". Then Ed kissed May on her forehead and helped her with the dishes.
After the dishes were done, Ed and May went to bed for the night.
Early next morning Alyra got out of her bed, and walked down the stairs right into the kitchen. She saw Ed making coffee for himself not noticing Alyra was watching him. When he turned around and noticed Alyra he jumped a bit, and said "what are you doing up this early?" Alyra replied "I am always up early, and sorry for scaring you I didn't mean too I was just watching what you are doing."
By the way what are you doing? Ed replies "I am making coffee". Alyra asked "what is coffee?" Ed tells her "bad stuff adults drink which they shouldn't", Alyra ask him "then why do you drink it?" Ed says "It grows hairs on your chest, and men like that". Alyra just snarl up her nose and says "gross". Ed starts to laugh.
Ed told Alyra "I will go and wake up May and be right back", Alyra said "okay".
Ed came back down the stairs and walked back into the kitchen, and said "May will be down in a few minutes and she will cook you some breakfast." Alyra looked at Ed and nodded.
Ed was about to go outside and feed the cattle, when he noticed Alyra not moving from her spot in the kitchen. He walked back to the kitchen and brought her into the living room, and put cartoons on the TV for her. He said you can watch this until May comes down. Alyra looked at him confused.
Ed continued to walk out of the house to go check and feed his cattle.
Alyra cautiously walked towards the TV trying to understand what she is seeing. when she put her tiny little hands on the screen, May startled Alyra and she jumped. May told Alyra "the TV doesn't bite much" with a smile.
May yawned a bit and asked Alyra "what she would like for breakfast?" Alyra replied "food". May shook her head laughing and told Alyra to follow her. May started to cook breakfast, she cooked eggs, hash browns, bacon, and toast. This time Alyra asked to help her with breakfast, and May let her make the toast, she also helped May to set the table. When everything was cooked and ready, she called out to Ed to come and eat breakfast before its cold.
Ed came in and washed his hands, and sat down at the table with May and Alyra. May and Ed said a prayer and began to eat. Alyra just mimic them.
Alyra helped May with the dishes and clean the table. While Ed read the newspaper in the living room.
May took Alyra up to her room and started to ask her some questions. " Little one where do you come from?" Alyra looked at May and said " Canada", May said "Canada, where in Canada are you from?" Alyra said "Grande Prairie", and May said "okay".
She asked Alyra about her parents, and Alyra looked down at her feet for a few minutes, then told May that her parents didn't want her, and that she been on her own since 5 yrs old. May asked her "how old she was?" and Alyra replied 'I am 8 yrs old now".
May broke down crying, Alyra asked " why she was crying?" May said "you been living out there with no one to protect you for 3 yrs looking for food and trying to live". Alyra told May "I am brave, strong, and a survivor". May held Alyra for a longtime and said " yes you are little one".
May wiped her tears away and gave Alyra a kiss on the forehead, and found her some clothes that fit her from her grandchildren. She brought Alyra to the bathroom and gave her a toothbrush and toothpaste to brush her teeth.
May went back downstairs and talked to Ed in the living room. The first thing she said " the little one is not going anywhere, and she is staying here". Ed looked at his wife and said "did you asked her the questions?" and May said "yes, and its horrible what she went through".
Ed heard Alyra coming down the stairs and said "we will talk more later the little one is here". May agreed.
After Ed learned Alyra situation he agreed to let May keep her. Ed and May knew they couldn't enroll her to school because they would ask to many questions, so they decided to teach her everything she needs to know about living.
May taught Alyra how to cook, bake, clean, shop, and do laundry, while Ed taught her math, writing, and about money.
Alyra helped Ed every morning with the cattle, and helped May with the house chores, and cooking. After 5 months staying with the Atwater's she finally felt loved and welcomed.
After 7 months with the Atwater's Alyra learned everything she could, and life seemed easier for her as a human.
May asked Alyra "does she know when her birthday is?" and Alyra replied " yes its March 14". Even though Alyra birthday passed May decided to make her a birthday cake and take Alyra out shopping.
May told Alyra "you are already 9 yrs old", and Alyra said "yes". "Well then tomorrow we are going shopping for a new outfit for you, and that will be your birthday gift from me and Ed". Alyra said "thank you with a big smile on her face while hugging May".
While shopping Alyra realized she spent a whole year with the Atwater's, and her mind strayed to ChiChi and how she should have been close to Tahoe by now, and being with the Moon Claw Pack.
She knew she had to leave the Atwater's, but she couldn't bare to watch when she breaks May and Ed heart by leaving. She decided she would leave when they are asleep.
She shared her birthday cake after supper with May and Ed, and went up to her room and devised a plan on how to leave, and start her journey to Mt Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest.
After 3 months of saving her allowance she got from the Atwater's for helping out, and slowly storing food, a blanket, and her clothes in a pack sack. She wrote the Atwater's a letter to leave on the kitchen table. She knew Ed would see it first before May would, because he is more an early riser.
Tomorrow night she would leave, for now she will enjoy the time she has left with them.
