Chapter 1
“It’s time to get a divorce.” Braylen Harper stood there, frozen, a bouquet of white roses clutched in his hand. “Jaslene, what?” His voice wavered with disbelief as he stared at his wife, Jaslene Randall. “I said,” Jaslene’s voice remained calm and cold, “It’s time to end this.” Braylen blinked, but still held the flowers.“But... it’s our third anniversary,” he said, his tone softer, as if trying to remind her of something long forgotten. Jaslene briefly flicked to the roses, but any trace of emotion vanished as quickly as it appeared. Her lawyer stepped forward, placing the divorce papers on the table between them. “What do you mean?” Braylen frowned at Jaslene. Jaslene looked at Braylen silently, and the lawyer, Flora Clark, standing beside her, spoke up at the moment, “That’s exactly what we meant, Mr. Harper. Your marriage has reached its end. If you insist on it, you'll only be a liability to Ms. Randall.” “A liability? Jaslene, is that what you think?” Braylen didn't even look at the lawyer but just stared straight at Jaslene, who looked so cold. “When I married you three years ago, the Randall Group was on the brink of bankruptcy, and even your house was mortgaged. It was me who stood by your side and went through the toughest times with you.” Braylen recalled what he had done for her. It was his secret help that allowed Jaslene and the Randall Group to successfully go public, and after that, Jaslene's net worth surpassed one hundred million dollars. In the three years of their marriage, he had always been there for her. “Jaslene, I was the one who had taken good care of your health. I always worried that you forgot to have a meal because of your heavy work, so I cooked for you every day. And I did all the household chores, so you didn’t need to worry about them at all after work. Besides, I handled all the trivial matters and troubles of your mother and brother for you. Jaslene, can’t you see it’s me who did all these for you?” Braylen couldn't understand why Jaslene wanted a divorce. He not only took good care of Jaslene but also secretly funded her business several times. He just never revealed it to her out of concern for her safety. “Braylen, what I wanted was never just these superficial things. I could hire a maid to do everything you've done!” Jaslene then took out a card, saying, “I am sorry. Here are five hundred thousand dollars as compensation.” Braylen stared at Jaslene in disbelief. “In your eyes, our three years of marriage is only worth five hundred thousand dollars?” How could their love be measured in money? “Do you want more?” Jaslene frowned as if the man in front of her were a greedy vagrant. “I can add another three hundred thousand dollars, so it’ll be eight hundred thousand dollars. Is that enough?” “You’re...” Braylen was furious, wondering, ‘What does she mean by this? Does she take me as a beggar?’ “Jaslene, what do you take me for?” He took a step forward, growling. “Hey! What are you trying to do?” Noticing Braylen’s action, Flora rushed between Braylen and Jaslene. “Braylen, please mind your status! Ms. Randall is a sought-after CEO in Upbany Hills. She created a company worth one hundred million dollars in just three years! But what about you? You are just a man with no job and no qualifications. You can earn nothing. Even your daily expenses are offered by your wife. How can a failure like you deserve Ms. Randall?” “Ms. Clark!” Jaslene frowned and stopped Flora. “Is that what you think too?” Braylen stared at Jaslene. Jaslene looked at Braylen, closed her eyes, and spoke slowly, “You live passively, and you always hold me back. You don't know what I want.” “What do you want? Power? Money?” Braylen sneered. Jaslene got annoyed. “Who doesn’t want money and power? Without money, I can’t even pay for your daily expenses. Upbany Hills is filled with wealthy families, and they can destroy you easily if you have no power!” Braylen laughed coldly. “Is that so? I heard you've been getting close to the master of the Hartman family recently. Is he the reason you want a divorce?” Jaslene was about to deny it, but after thinking for a moment, she finally nodded. “That’s part of the reason.” Jaslene stared at Braylen. “Braylen, we are no longer on the same road. Divorce is best for both of us.” Jaslene rubbed her temple, feeling impatient. Braylen suddenly laughed and said to Jaslene slowly, “Okay, Jaslene. As you wish!” ‘There is nothing I can do about it. And there is no need to save this marriage!’ Braylen picked up the divorce application, signed his name, and turned to leave. “Hey! Wait a minute!” Flora called out to Braylen. He threw the card at Braylen's feet, saying, “Take it so you won't end up as a vagrant and embarrass Ms. Randall!” Flora’s face was full of disdain. Braylen tightened his grip on the bouquet of roses, then suddenly, he threw the bouquet against the wall. The bouquet hit the wall, and the white petals scattered like snow, as if it was holding a funeral for the marriage. “Jaslene, you’d better remember that there are things in this world that you can’t buy with money, including my love.” After speaking, Braylen stepped over the white rose petals on the floor and walked away without hesitation. Jaslene watched the white roses on the floor being trampled, and suddenly smiled with relief. “What I wanted was never white roses.” After signing the divorce application, Braylen wandered casually on the street. The streets of Upbany Hills were bustling with people, but Braylen felt so desolate. “It’s over.” When Braylen signed the papers, he thought he had let go, but leaving Jaslene still left him unsettled. At that moment, a Rolls-Royce stopped in front of Braylen, and the rear door opened. A middle-aged man got out of the car hurriedly. He was dressed in a fashionable tailored suit and had eyes as sharp as a knife, exuding the aura of a big shot. He looked around first. Making sure there were only a few people around, he ran up to Braylen quickly. He bowed slightly and performed a rare aristocratic gesture towards Braylen. “Lord!” “Dalton, didn't I tell you not to contact me unless it's urgent?” Braylen frowned upon seeing Dalton Ferrell, the middle-aged man. If anyone else saw Dalton being so respectful in front of Braylen, they would definitely be shocked. After all, Dalton was the president of the Universe Chamber of Commerce, the leading business association in Upbany Hills. With countless industries under his belt and a fortune exceeding ten billion dollars, he could be called a lead figure in the city's economy. Yet, in front of the “failure” whom Jaslene looked down upon, Dalton was so humble. Hearing Braylen’s words, Dalton immediately stiffened and apologized, “I'm so sorry, Lord. It won’t happen again.” Braylen cast a glance at him indifferently. “Why are you here?”
