The Wine Glass
"How is your heartbeat now, sir?" Ashley asked some minutes after Morgan Wilson's private jet took off.
"The doctor recently told me it is stable." He blinked avoiding eye contact with her "please come over here and sit down."
Ashley obeyed immediately and left her seat. "sir,"
"Ashley, I know everything is happening so fast and you may be wondering why I chose you to work for me and to be my personal assistant which is a very sensitive position at this time..."
"Sir, I can't see anyone traveling with you. Why am I the only one today?" Ashley's brows curved and she felt uncomfortable.
"Please listen, Ashley, time is against me. Tell me please, have I been good to you?"
"It's been only three days working for you but I must say, yes, you have."
"Good." He nodded and flipped the pages of a document on his lap. He then leaned forward and placed it on the table in-between "Ashley, I want you to be good to me as well."
"What is this?" She asked the minute she glanced through the same document.
"This document states that you have the legal rights to all that belongs to me including the rights to choose whoever succeeds me. I have three sons and none of which I deem fit to carry on after I am gone. I want you to act in my stead until you find out which one of my sons is capable of handling my wealth and apportioning my fortune in a way that brings equity." He uttered hastily and waggled his eyebrows "Please sign here and make it quick before I change my mind."
Ashley's eyes dilated and her jaw dropped while listening to him speak promptly.
"But sir, you barely know me. I-I can't" Ashley stuttered...
"O yes you can. I read your file and I employed you. I wish I have all the time in the world to know you better. You don't think a man of my age knows best when he chooses to trust you? I have no one else to trust but you."
"But sir, you speak so well of your closest friend, Alonso." She asserted recalling the man he introduced her to on the day she was employed.
"Yes I trust him but not with delicate matters as this one. You should be happy about this but you're not."
"I am scared. I have not been able to handle so much in my life, and I don't want to fail you." Ashley's voice slightly whimpered.
"That's the more reason why you are the best choice." He said placing his hand on his chest again and his face squeezed.
"Sir, are you alright? Should I call someone?" She panicked but he immediately stopped her, "No, that won't be necessary. Just sign already." This time his tone was no longer gentle but rough.
Ashley picked up the pen and signed without thinking further. It was written all over her face that she was not comfortable with it. She was only driven by compassion and fear that something bad might happen to him simply because she was proving difficult to get the document signed.
"Thank you, Ashley. You can sit down over there now. Let me worry about our wedding plans."
"Whaa! What wedding sir?" Her eyes flashed.
"It is stated in the document that you have also accepted to be my wife. You don't have to worry too much, it is a contract that will be terminated once you have picked a successor for me."
"Sir!" She shrilled.
"Ashley you are young and I am not intending to destroy your life. I won't touch you if that's what you are thinking. Please I need my privacy now. With time you'll get to understand you made the right choice." He finished and narrowed his eyes on his phone screen.
Ashley left with jutting chin, concealing her anger within her because she respected her job.
"Ashley, come on, let's go." Morgan snapped her out of her thoughts on his way out.
Alonso stood there with a hands crossed in front of him, watching Morgan walk down the stairs of his jet and when he reached towards him, he said, "long trip huh?"
"No, it was a short one to me. I proposed to Ashley and she said, yes. There was no time to even exude my emotions hugging her before landing." Morgan replied in a way that cracked up his bodyguards.
Alonso forced a smile and kept talking immediately they entered one of the cars "you proposed and you never told me about it?" and he had his seatbelt on while listening to Morgan.
"It happened so fast my friend. I fell in love with her and she reciprocated. By the way our wedding is taking place next tomorrow. You can assist me with the preparations right?"
"Right." Alonso replied and threw his wince transformed face out the window.
At 9:15 a.m. on the day of their wedding, Morgan kept trying to get hold of himself before stepping out of his dressing room when his best man walked in and ordered the rest of his groomsmen out. "all of you, please leave us." Alonso commanded, then waited for them to leave before shutting the door and facing Morgan "the crowd is more than expected, Morgan."
"I was not expecting less. Only I can't face them." Morgan uttered sounding troubled.
Alonso gasped and looked him in the eye, "have you taken your medication this morning?"
"I just did. It's not about my heart now, but my hands are trembling."
"Nervous isn't it?" Alonso asked and walked away to get wine, expecting Morgan to say a word which he didn't. "Your sons, Lucious and Jamal are here. And oh, I forgot, including the bastards one, Josh." Alonso pitched a little bit and peek to see if Morgan was watching. Then he poured in a sore substance to poison Morgan's wine before stiring.
"I invited them all personally. And please you don't have to remind me he is a bastard. I have accepted him."
"Hmmm, is that so?" Alonso said and handed over the poisoned drink to him, "to friendship and a happy married life." He made a toast and started drinking to make Morgan drink and when he noticed he wasn't drinking, he added, "drink up, Morgan. It will help ease your tension. Wine is a good remedy."
