Morning Routine

849 Words
After my shower I had gotten dressed and took out all the things needed to make my siblings and myself breakfast. Its actually really hard cooking for 6 kids of different ages because they are all picky eaters in their own way. After a lot of trial and error I've come to find that pancakes, eggs, and bacon with some type of drink is the best way to go. I start a pot of water and a pot of milk so i can make hot chocolate and go wake up my siblings.           I woke my brothers up first since they take the longest to get ready. My little sister Lexi was just a ball of energy and Bellatrix was only three so she didn't have school. After the boys dragged their feet getting ready I sat the food in front of them and woke Lexi. Then, I gently lifted my baby sister from her bed and carried her to the table while she stirred awake.           I put two plates to the side for my best friend, Alise and myself and the rest of the food in the center of the table if anyone wanted seconds. I ate my food slowly watching my siblings eat their food talking and laughing. carefree.           The door opened suddenly stirring me from my thoughts I straightened quickly, body ready for a fight, but relaxed as soon as i saw my best friends blond hair peak through. Her baby blue eyes went straight to the counter and she smiled her sweet knowing smile at me closing the door behind her.           "Morning kids," She said placing her baby blue bag on the floor "Amey" she made her way over to me grabbing her plate. "Morning" "Hey lease" "Sup Alise" "Al-Al"           Came the various replies of the children. I nodded to my best friend in acknowledgment and relaxed back against the counter. She was in a good mood today her eyes alight with excitement, a bounce to her step a permanent upturn to her pink painted lips. She looked at me expectantly and smiled even more.           "Out with it" I tried to sound strict but it came out good naturedly just as it always did when talking to her.           "Are you excited for the first day of school?" she asked still not haven to take a bite of her food. I gestured to it with my head to entice her to eat then shook it.           "You know I'm never excited for school" she shook her head eyes twinkling with amusement and understanding, but she said nothing and started on her pancakes.           After everyone had finished their food and Alise and I washed the dishes. As we were leaving with the kids she picked up my youngest sibling and looked at me with mischief in her eyes and said, "Well I think this years gonna be kick-ass" she winked disappearing around the corner of the doorway.            I shook my head at her smiling to myself at her optimism, but even through her joking and good natured spirit i couldn't shake this bad feeling I had. When I turned around Alise was already handing a still sleepy Bellatrix over to my neighbor Mrs.Johnson, a sweet old lady recently widowed, and saying goodbye to both. Mrs.Johnson wished us both a good day and closed the door gently as to not disturb bellatrix or the neighbors.           The rest of my siblings pushed each other trying to get the staircase first, not that it mattered they couldn't get out the building without a keycard. I cleared my throat loudly a warning to them to stop shoving on the stairs, it took a total of 5 seconds for the kids to calm under my command. Alise shook her head with a small laugh and took lead heading down the stairs first while I brought up the rear.           Alise scanned her key card holding the door open to allow the kids to file out and run to the matt black minivan Alise's parents had bought to accommodate all of us. They also are technically our legal guardians and caretakers. I nodded to Saunders, the chauffeur that has been driving us around since pre-k and reclined my seat all the way. sleep was futile but closing my eyes prevented a headache most days.            After stops at the kids various schools we had reached our final destination. Saunders bid us farewell wishing us both a perfect first day and we thanked him. I took my place on my best friends right side and she gripped my hand tightly. For the first time this morning she let her act drop and I could see how truly nervous she was. I squeezed back lightly and her worried baby blue eyes turned to me. "kick-ass remember?" I said teasingly bumping her shoulder with mine. she smiled a small smile the look in her eyes dissipating and nudged me back "kick-ass" she agreed determination on her face.
