Chapter 3

1052 Words
Allyssa I still can’t believe David and I are married as I stare at the marriage certificate that the judge gave us. "Stop staring at that or it might suddenly disappear." David took the marriage certificate from my hand and slipped it into his pocket. "Let me keep this for you." Now that we’re married, I’m only just starting to feel awkward. What are we supposed to do now? "Umm..." "Let's go." He took my arm and guided me back to his car. "Where are we going?" I asked him in confusion. I was just about to ask him what we’d do after the wedding. "Where else but your house," he replied shortly before starting the car engine and driving away. "To my house? What will we do there?" I asked innocently. Nothing was coming to mind at that moment. I still felt lightheaded, after all. Still couldn't believe that I married him even if it was only for the sake of responsibility. "We’ll get your things. I don't have a plan to separate from my newlywed wife," he simply answered. I just nodded and didn’t argue with what he said. That was actually good. It would give me more reason to leave our house. It was my mother’s house and was registered under my name. But right now, it’s under my father’s name since he’s my guardian. When we arrived in front of our house, I went inside alone and let David wait in his car. My stepmother would definitely get suspicious if she saw us together. "Where have you been, Allyssa? Why didn’t you come home last night?" my stepmother snapped at me as if she owned the house. "Do you even need to ask, Mom? You know how my sister is. She was probably at a bar again last night with some unknown guys from the bar," Hannah said with a malicious smile on her face. This is how they treat me. They don’t treat me like family. It’s as if they’re the owners of the house and I’m merely a lodger in my own home. "Do I need to report to you why I didn’t come home last night, Hilga?" I asked my stepmother irritably. Ever since she moved into our house and became my stepmother, I’ve never called her "mom" even though that’s what Dad wanted me to call his mistress. Even though Dad slapped me several times, he couldn’t force me to do what he wanted until he finally gave up and let me call Hilga whatever I liked. "How ungrateful! I was just concerned about you, Allyssa. You're a vulnerable girl. What if something bad happened to you out there? We’d be really sad if that happened." "Drop your act of being a hypocrite, Hilga. Stop pretending you're concerned about me. Dad isn’t here to see us anyway," I shot back at her. That’s one of the things I hate most about Hilga. She was so pretentious, especially when my father was around. Hilga’s face turned red from embarrassment and her gaze sharpened on me. "Okay, fine. I'm not going to pretend anymore. You won’t be staying in this house much longer anyway," she said with a smirk. "What do you mean?" What scheme are they planning against me now? I’ve avoided countless plots by the two of them since I turned eighteen. They can’t wait to send me away and take over my house that's why they are plotting against me again. Hannah stepped closer to me and answered my question. "Tomorrow night, Mr. Chua will come here to propose marriage to you, Allyssa. Dad already agreed to your marriage to him. All you need to do is accept his proposal. It’s for the good of our family anyway. Dad needs Mr. Chua's money for an investment. A little sacrifice won't hurt you." I couldn’t stop my hands from clenching into fists. Mr. Chua was one of my dad's friends. I met him last week on his birthday. Dad introduced him to me. And from the very first time we met, he showed interest in me. Mr. Chua was a perverted old man, almost like a grandfather to me. Even though he was seeing countless women, he still had side flings. He didn’t want to get married because it would tie him down to just one woman. So that’s why Dad introduced me to Mr. Chua, he’d actually planned to sell me off to that perverted old man. "Did Dad ask me if I was willing to be the wife of that perverted old man?" I gave Hannah a scornful look. "Why don’t you marry him instead, Hannah? You two are more suited. One is a perverted old man while the other is the daughter of a mistress. You won’t get hurt if Mr. Chua has other women because I’m sure your mother, who was also a mistress, has already trained you for that. A perverted old man and the daughter of a homewrecker. Very well matched." "How dare you insult my mom and me!" Hannah shouted in anger. "Dad loves my mom. He only married your mom for her money. And all of your mom's money will end up in our hands. You can blame your mom. She was stupid for believing that dad loves her." Hannah laughed loudly and mockingly, but suddenly stopped when my palm struck her face. "You and your mistress mother will never get my mom's money. And I promise that one day, I will chase the two of you out of my house," I said, holding back my anger. My mom is my bottom line, and she dared to cross it. She deserved that slap. I turned my back on Hannah and started walking toward the stairs, but stopped when she called my name. "I've been enduring you for so long. You should die, b***h!" When I heard Hannah say that, I immediately faced her. My eyes widened as I saw her hand holding a glass ashtray and she was about to swing it at my head. "Try to hit her and I promise I will break your arms," a man’s voice said firmly. Hilga and Hannah both looked toward the man who’d spoken. Their eyes widened and their faces turned pale as they recognized who he was.
