FORTY-SIX Thomas drove right over the orange barriers that blocked the roadway leading to the shore. Eva jumped out of the car before he’d even come to a complete stop, and took off running toward the enclosures. Thomas opened the car door and was engulfed by the silence. No squeaks, whistles, or clicks. Only the gentle break of waves against the dock. The security lights around the perimeter were out as well. Thomas ordered Sol to stay in the car and lock the doors, then he took off after Eva. He found her by Taffy’s enclosure, hovering over three bodies tied to the pilings there—Axel, Jose, and Ruben.
