CHAPTER ONE
“I should be going Gerald, I have something to do at home”
Elena stood up from the chair, her voice low as she and her boyfriend were In the library.
The handsome young man who was previously engrossed in a thick leather bound book frowned heavily.
“What's so important that you have to cut our fun time short?” he asked.
Elena pouted her lips, her eyebrows tightening at the thought of the urgent text message she had just received from her father but she couldn't tell him that, after all he didn't know yet.
“Fun time, you mean watching you read while I try to entertain myself in the library?” Elena asked with a small smile on her face.
“It's the thought that counts, staying with you here in this serene environment while I do what I love doing the most is actually what I've always wanted” Gerald said, a far away look in his eyes.
Elena burst into laughter, Gerald's palm suddenly clasping over her lips as he glared at her dotingly.
“Why are you chortling like a pig, have you forgotten where we are?” He asked.
Elena looked around and indeed, most of the people reading in the library and even the library attendant was glaring at her.
Elena blushed in embarrassment while Gerald apologized on her behalf.
“Look what you caused” she scolded him with a quiet voice, she turned to discreetly look at the others and sighed in relief when she saw that they were no longer staring at them, she heaved a sigh of relief.
Just as she turned again, she felt something warm on her lips.
Elena's eyes widened in shock, she suddenly jerked up from the seat, the legs of the seat scraping loudly on the floor as she carried her sling bag and hurried out of the Library.
“Elena! Wait up, Elena!”
Elena walked hurriedly, she could hear Gerald's voice calling her but she didn't want to stop.
“I'm talking to you Elena” he yelled, grabbing her hands forcibly.
Elena struggled but he held her down.
“Am i that disgusting?” Gerald suddenly asked.
Elena paused and stared at him with wide eyes “No you are not?” She screamed hurriedly.
“Then why do you keep reacting this way when i kiss you or is it that you don't really love me as you said?” He asked in a hurt voice.
“No it's not about that, i love you Soo much but…”
“You have nothing to say?, I'm your boyfriend but i don't know anything about you neither do i even know who your parents are, worse i can't even kiss my girlfriend or peck her!” Gerald ranted angrily.
“I'm sorry…” Elena stammered, she was always weak in front of people she loved and cared for.
“Then if it's so …. give me a kiss” he said.
Elena stared at him for sometime before shaking her head.
The light in Gerald's eyes dimmed “i thought as much”
After saying this, he left angrily.
…
“Where are you coming from? Didn't you see my text?”
Elena paused at the stairs, her palms clenching into fists as she gripped onto the hem of her pink dress, the argument she had just had with Gerald was still ringing in her head and right now, she didn't have the energy to face her father.
“I was with Annabelle in her …”
“Stop giving me that stupid lie, i just got off the phone with the Holloway family and they aren't even in the country, somewhere were you?”
Elena stared at her fuming father, the man who was the head of the family and CEO of the McCormick family glared at his daughter who had just become an adult.
“I'm sorry father, i went to the library for my research papers”
The middle aged man thought for sometime before releasing a breath and then he nodded slowly “Go inside and dress up, we have an important gala to attend” He said in a stern voice.
“But father…i thought you were going alone?” Elena asked in confusion, she had never gone to any even with her father before because he always said that he was ashamed of her.
She wasn't as smart, beautiful or elegant as the daughters of his friends.
“Well change of plans Elena and as a good child, You shouldn't ask questions so go upstairs and get dressed, the maids are in your room waiting for you” he said In a tome that suggested he wasn't going to accept any other statement from her.
Elena nodded and hurried up the stairs, leaving her father standing there.
…
“Make sure you don't disgrace our family name here, the eyes of the media will be on us this night” Aaron said, immediately he and Elena entered the event hall.
Men and women could be seen milling around , dressed on their best.
The crowd was filled with an array of beautiful lady in expensive dresses and men in luxurious Tuxedo.
“I promise father” Elena said, trepidation filling her body.
“Good for you” Aaron said in a satisfied tone, he patted her hand that was clinging onto his arms as they walked deeper into the hall.
Elena and her father walked deeper into the crowd of people , by now the others had already noticed the arrival of the father and child.
Some people were even making their way towards them.
One of them was a middle-aged man with pepper spray coloured.
“Is this the elegant Miss McCormick we have been hearing about?” The man asked, he took Elena’s arms and kissed the back of her palms lightly.
Elena was disgusted with the look in the eyes of the man.
She wanted to pull her havd away sharply but then when she remembered her father's warnings, she swallowed thickly.
“Mr Elrod, there's no need for all the sweet words, she is just a young girl who hasn't seen the world” Mr McCormick said instantly.
He removed Mr Elrod’s hand, a polite smile on his face.
Elena heaved a sigh of relief “Dad…can I go get a glass of water?” She asked in a small squeaky voice.
Mr McCormick nodded at her.
Immediately she got his confirmation, Elena walked out hurriedly.
She was already getting suffocated by the crowd that was gathering.
She needed to find somewhere to unwind.
“What the f**k!”
