Chapter 17
The atmosphere of the city seemed subdued, and the only sound that disturbed her silence was the heavy tramp of the boots of the Marines patrolling the corridors of the ground level of Eden.
They snapped to attention when John strode in. Emma and Layton stayed back to let him deal with this.
“I’m Colonel Berger.” It wasn’t necessary for him to state he was the ranking officer on Nibiru. The eagles on his collar did that for him.
“Colonel! We were told Colonel Lewis had relieved you of your command!” The Marines warily eyed the rifle John carried.
“In his dreams!” John muttered. “As you can see, he was wrong. Where is Colonel Lewis?”
“He’s—uh—” The Marine addressed swallowed heavily. “I believe he left word he’d be in his quarters, sir.”
“Yes? And where might they be?”
