CHAPTER 3: ENTERING THE LION’S DEN

Chapter 3: Entering the Lion’s Den Eve sat stiffly in the passenger seat as the car rumbled down the unfamiliar roads. Outside the window, the city sprawled in a mess of neon lights, towering buildings, and endless movement. She watched as humans bustled through the streets—talking, laughing, completely oblivious to the supernatural forces that once governed their existence. Everything was so… bright. So noisy. The supernatural realm was bathed in eternal night, where moonlight reigned, and the shadows stretched endlessly. But here, artificial light consumed everything, drowning out the stars above. It was overwhelming. Chaotic. And for the first time in over a century, Eve felt lost. She clenched her fists. No. I will not allow this world to break me. "Are you sure you’re alright?" Dr. Carter asked, glancing at her from the driver’s seat. Eve forced herself to nod. "I’m fine." He didn’t look convinced but didn’t press further. A few minutes later, the car slowed, turning into a quiet suburban neighborhood. Unlike the bright city, this area was calmer. Houses lined the streets, each with small lawns and parked cars. It was too peaceful. Dr. Carter pulled into the driveway of a large, two-story house. It had a modest charm—white walls, a small porch, and a warm glow from the windows. "Welcome to my home," he said, shutting off the engine. Eve hesitated before stepping out. As she took in the sight of the house, a strange feeling settled in her chest—discomfort. She had lived in grand castles, in halls built from obsidian and marble. This… this was something else entirely. Something human. Before she could dwell on the thought, the front door swung open. "Dad, you’re home! And—" The girl at the door froze when she saw Eve. She had wavy brown hair, striking green eyes, and an expression that flickered between curiosity and annoyance. Dr. Carter smiled. "Bella, this is Eve. She’ll be staying with us for a while." Bella’s gaze snapped back to him. "Staying with us? Since when?" "Since I found her unconscious on the road last night," he replied patiently. "She doesn’t remember much, and she has nowhere else to go." Bella crossed her arms. "Dad, you can’t just bring random people home." Eve’s eyes narrowed. This human girl dares to question me? In the supernatural realm, disrespect toward a ruler would have meant execution. But here… she was just a powerless guest in a stranger’s home. "I will not be a burden," Eve said, her voice cold. "I will not interfere with your life." Bella’s lips pressed into a thin line. "I hope so," she muttered, stepping aside. Eve walked past her, unwilling to waste any more words. The house was… strange. Warmth radiated from the wooden floors, the air smelled of spices, and soft couches surrounded a fireplace. Framed photographs lined the walls—memories captured in still images. A concept completely foreign to the vampire court, where history was written in blood, not smiles. Then, a new voice broke the silence. "Oh? Who’s this?" Eve turned. A young man leaned against the kitchen counter—tall, broad-shouldered, with messy dark hair and striking blue eyes. He was undeniably handsome, but there was something off about him. He was watching her too closely. "She’s staying with us for now," Dr. Carter explained. The young man smirked. "A new housemate? How interesting." His sharp gaze locked onto Eve. "I’m Aiden. And you are…?" She met his gaze without flinching. He was testing her. "Eve," she said simply. Aiden chuckled. "Mysterious. I like it." Bella groaned. "Aiden, don’t be weird." He raised his hands in mock innocence. "What? I’m just curious about our guest." Eve ignored them, already exhausted by human interactions. Dr. Carter gestured toward the staircase. "Eve, your room is upstairs, second door on the left. Get some rest." Without another word, she ascended the stairs. --- Eve’s Room The room was… small. A single bed, a wooden desk, a window overlooking the backyard. Too quiet. Too ordinary. She walked to the window, pressing a hand against the glass. The night sky stretched above, but it felt… different. The moon was distant. Almost as if it had abandoned her. She clenched her jaw. No. I am still Queen. Even if she had lost her powers, even if she was trapped in this world, she would not break. She sat on the bed, running a hand through her long silver hair. Everything was wrong. The betrayal. The lightning. The portal. And now, she was stuck in a world where she had no subjects, no kingdom, no power. For the first time in over a century, Eve Corvin was alone. But she would not stay this way. She would find a way back. And when she returned… She would make them pay
