Chapter 7: Between Two Worlds
---
A Lesson in Humanity
Eve was getting better at blending in.
Or so she thought.
"Uh, Eve?" Hope whispered beside her. "You're staring again."
Eve blinked, realizing she had been watching a group of students laughing at their table, studying the way their emotions flickered across their faces.
They were so… expressive.
Unrestrained.
It was fascinating.
"I was not staring," Eve corrected smoothly.
Hope smirked. "Yeah? Because you look like you're trying to solve the mysteries of the human race."
Eve considered that.
"Perhaps I am."
Hope laughed, but Bella, who was sitting across from them, frowned.
"You seriously don’t know how to act normal, do you?"
Eve tilted her head. "Define normal."
Bella groaned. "For starters, stop acting like everything is a strategic battlefield. High school isn’t life or death."
Eve arched a brow. "Is it not?"
"You’re scary," Bella muttered.
Hope, of course, was delighted. "No, she's cool."
Bella sighed, pushing her tray of food forward. "Here, if you want to blend in, eat something."
Eve stared at the plastic-wrapped sandwich.
She had observed humans consuming food before. She understood the process. But she had never needed to do it.
Still, if this was part of her act…
She picked up the sandwich and took a small bite.
Hope leaned in. "And?"
Eve chewed, swallowed, and gave a bland assessment.
"It is… adequate."
Bella snorted. "Adequate? God, you're weird."
Hope nodded sagely. "In the best way."

Unraveling the Mystery
Later that afternoon, Eve wandered the hallways, alone.
She had sensed it again.
That strange, flickering energy—like a whisper in the wind. Elusive. Watching.
The school had too many blind spots, too many places where something could hide.
Eve hated not knowing.
She turned a corner and suddenly—
Darkness.
The hallway lights flickered.
The chatter of students faded.
A strange pressure filled the air.
For a brief second, Eve felt it—something ancient. Familiar.
Not a vampire.
Not human.
But then, just as quickly as it came, it vanished.
The lights steadied. The noise of the school returned.
Eve stood still, her crimson eyes dark.
She was not alone in this school.
And whoever—or whatever—was here... was hiding.

Small Moments of Humanity
By the time Eve returned to class, the disruption had passed.
But something strange happened.
She found herself watching Hope and Bella.
The way Hope laughed freely, without caution. The way Bella sighed dramatically, but cared more than she let on.
Eve had ruled for 150 years.
She had led armies. She had crushed rebellions. She had held power that shook the supernatural world.
But this?
This human existence—where people fought over popularity, romance, and school drama—was foreign to her.
And yet…
She was starting to understand why it mattered.
Perhaps power was not the only thing that defined a life.
Perhaps there was more.
And for the first time in centuries—
She felt curious.

An Unexpected Invitation
After class, as they walked toward the school exit, Hope turned to Eve with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"So, Eve…"
Eve raised a brow. "Yes?"
Hope grinned. "Do you want to come to my house after school?"
Eve blinked. "Why?"
Bella sighed. "It's called hanging out. It's what normal people do."
Hope nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! And you're coming."
Eve considered it. She had been studying human behavior from afar. Perhaps experiencing it firsthand would be… useful.
"Very well," she said.
Hope clapped her hands. "Awesome! Let's go!"

Hope’s House
Hope's house was nothing like the vampire palace Eve once ruled.
It was small. Cozy. Lived-in.
The walls were covered in photos—images of Hope at different ages, smiling with her family.
The air smelled of warmth and spices.
Eve stood in the doorway, uncertain.
Hope flopped onto the couch. "Make yourself at home!"
Eve slowly sat down. The couch was… soft.
"So," Hope began, grinning. "What do you do for fun?"
Eve hesitated. "Define fun."
Bella groaned. "You seriously need help."
Hope laughed. "Okay, let's try something simple. Have you ever watched a movie?"
Eve shook her head.
Hope gasped, grabbed the remote, and turned on the TV. "Well, today’s your lucky day."
Eve studied the screen. Moving images. A story unfolding.
She had seen many things in her life. Wars. Betrayal. Bloodshed.
But this—this strange, human pastime—was entirely new.
And for the first time in a long time…
She felt like she was experiencing something different.
