CHAPTER 1
Alex Thompson walked into his penthouse with a heavy heart, but in place of his usual warmness and cheerfulness was an eerie silence. With his heart in his mouth, having imagined at least 100 things that could have gone wrong within a minute, he kept walking hoping he was wrong. He got to their bedroom door and saw her suitcase packed. He got even more anxious. He saw her standing a little to his right and softly called her name. Emma, what's going on? Why is your luggage packed? She looked at him with puffy eyes filled with a disappointing glare and at that moment he could hear his heart shattering into a million pieces. She tried calming her racing heart but fixed her glare on him; the man she thought she knew. Alex, the self-made, confident billionaire, stood before her but this time his confident aura was shattered as a result of his confrontation with Liam, his business partner. He didn't dream he would have to come home to meet this. All he wanted to do was to immerse himself in alcohol, but he had to know why Emma was so angry with him, so he stood rooted to the spot. “How could you” Alex? He heard her trembling voice. Her eyes brimming with fresh tears she continued," You lied to me, you hid the truth about your past. I can't trust you anymore," he heard her say after a while. Alex’s mood, though he was already in a bad state before leaving the office, went from bad to worse in a split second, but he stood there with his eyes pleading for understanding and a chance to explain himself, but Emma's mind was already made up. She was determined to end this relationship, not minding the toll it would all take on him. I have to protect myself. She kept chanting in her head while holding back the tears threatening to fall. She had discovered the truth of how he had been a bully, and it was too much for her to bear, especially since she was almost bullied as a child as well. She just couldn't shake off the feeling that he would try to bully her into submission, because once a bully is always a bully. But, that's a huge red flag for Emma in any relationship, either platonic or romantic. Emma, please listen, Alex began, but Emma cut him off. She was determined not to hear his c**k-and-bull story this time. “You've done enough, your actions have consequences. You have broken my trust and I can't stay in this relationship” she screamed at him. With a heavy heart, Emma turned and walked away with her luggage, leaving a heartbroken Alex behind. Emma knew she had made the right decision, but she couldn’t help feeling the weight of her decision crushing her, it felt like a thousand shards of glass were piercing her heart. The dull ache seemed to have found its way around her whole body. As she got into the taxi she had stopped, she felt the tears she had struggled with for so long finally break free. The tears continuously streamed down her face like a torrent of sorrow. Once settled at the back of the taxi, her mind continuously brought back memories of their time together, their shared laughter and tender touch. She dreaded living without these experiences or the brightness of his smile. However, she knew she had made her bed by ending the relationship, so she had no option but to lay on it that way. Alex's world had fallen apart, and Emma turning her back on him at this point had made him a hollow shell of the man he once was. The loss of his company, his pride and joy was a bitter pill to swallow, but it was nothing compared to the emptiness he felt when Emma walked away from him. His emotion was all over the place, and it felt like he was drowning in despair, unable to catch his breath as the weight of his mistakes crushed him. His once bright and confident eyes seemed to hold a thousand midnight, as they quickly became empty and dark just like the day becomes night. His once strong and chiseled face appeared to be haunted and gaunt. His shoulders slumped in defeat as if the weight of his loss was too much of a burden to bear. He wandered around his penthouse as though he was a ghost, haunting the ruins of his own life. Every step he took echoed the memories of Emma's laughter, her smile and her name. Every room he entered seemed to be whispering her name, he couldn't seem to find one that wasn't trying to remind him of her. His mind was a jumble of regret, replaying every moment, every decision and every mistake that led to that moment. He couldn't help but wonder what should have been and what could have been if Liam hadn't come into the picture. Their lives would still have been perfect, and he would still have had his company. He deeply regrets accepting Liam's investment. After Emma left, the silence in the penthouse had been deafening, a stark contrast to the vibrant life he once knew. His heart once full of love and hope now feels like a cold and dark stone weighed down by the gravity of his loss. Alex was left with nothing but the shattered remains of his ego, his company, and his heart, which serves as a reminder that some wounds don't heal. He sat there on the cold floor, he couldn't get himself to change out of his work clothes. He sat trying to scream and drink his frustrations away. Emma told the taxi to keep driving around the city as her mind was too jumbled to think of a place she wanted to alight, but she found herself once again at the entrance of the apartment Alex lives in, but now she's a little calmer. She paid the man and hailed another taxi to take her to her mother's old apartment. She hadn't been there in a while since her mother passed away, but luckily she had kept the place and the key. Since no one had been there for so long, she knew she was going to spend the rest of her day cleaning. She was glad, at least she wouldn't have to spend the day in bed crying and regretting her actions. She would do anything to take her mind off her present failed relationship. When the taxi got to the neighborhood where the apartment was located, she started fixing herself to avoid being seen as a mess. As she alighted in front of the apartment and saw some familiar old faces, she stood transfixed on the ground remembering the day she found out the truth about the man she was in love with. She remembered asking his secretary to set up an appointment with his business partner’s secretary, but she got a text from Liam instead asking to take her on a date. Her whole body trembled at the thought of a date with him. She wondered what he wanted to discuss with her which couldn't be done in the office.
