CHAPTER4

Emma's heart skipped a beat as Sophia continued their discussion. The more she spoke the more she realized she didn't know anything about the man she'd been living with for months now. The words she spoke kept painting a shocking picture of deceit and betrayal. Alex was the one who bullied me for over 5 years, she said, her voice low and mysterious. “He made living hell for me and left me with all these scars as proof of his abuse. Emma’s eyes continued to grow bigger as Sophia revealed the extent to which Alex went just to bully her. At one point, Sophia got worried it might fall out of its sockets. Emma just couldn't believe the man she loved was capable of such behavior. But, indeed, all the words she has heard and the scars on Sophia's face are enough proof of Alex's wrongdoings. However, she knew she had to defend her man as much as she could. “Why are you telling me this?” she asked Sophia with a trembling voice", you don't even have proof that it was done by him. Sophia's eyes darkened as her emotions began to cloud her judgment. All the same, she continued, "I want you to know the truth about the man you are protecting, that is why I'm telling you." Although Alex has a sweet and innocent appearance, beneath that lurks a monster who will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. Emma’s mind began to race as Sophia's words struck a chord within her. She had always known Alex was hiding something about his past from her, but she had never suspected it would have been that bullying was totally unacceptable to her. She wouldn't stand or wait till he gets triggered and acts out on her. As Sophia continued to speak, Emma's fear turned to anger against Alex. She couldn't believe he was capable of such behavior. She was also angry at herself for not seeing through him and his facade. “You're lying, Emma spat. Alex would never do something like that”. Sophia's laughter was cold and calculating. “You're so naive Emma, little wonder Alex is head over heels for you” she said. You actually think you know anything about Alex and his past? You don't know Jack about him, she spat. Emma's anger got to its peak, and she threw herself at Sophia. But Sophia anticipated such a reaction and was much quicker than Emma. She caught Emma's wrists in a vice-like grip. "You're not going anywhere," Sophia spat, her eyes blazing with intensity. "You're going to stay and listen to what I have to say, and I'm going to make sure you believe it." Emma attempted to free herself from Sophia's hold but to no avail. She was trapped, and she knew it. After such an encounter, Emma's mind was made up. I'm putting an end to this relationship once I'm out of here, she said to herself. Little did she know she wouldn't be getting out of there anytime soon. What about Liam? She asked Sophia. The wheels kept turning in her head. What does he have to do with any of this? When Sophia heard his name, Sophia smiled warmly. It was obvious she cared for her brother from the way she reacted to just the mention of his name. Liam is my brother, he has always had it out for Alex since he got to know about the bullying, so it was pretty easy to join hands with him to destroy Alex, and now that we are on the verge of it happening after planning and taking calculated actions against Alex for so long, I'm not going to let you truncate my plans. Especially not when I'm this close to executing it. The wheels kept turning in Emma's head as she wondered what the plans were and if it ended up just taking over the company. She was trying her best to process every piece of information she heard so she could know what reactions to give. What do you mean? What plans are you talking about? Sophia's eyes gleamed with a fierce intensity. "Liam has been gathering evidence against Alex for years," she said. "He had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to act. And with you in the picture, Emma, he now has the perfect pawn in his plans." Emma struggled to understand the full scope of Liam's involvement. She was in shock that he was planning to take advantage of her and the deal she proposed to gain access to Alex. Emma still struggled to comprehend the full scope of Liam's involvement. She was still in shock that she had unknowingly helped him with his revenge plans. "But why?" Emma asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why would Liam do such a thing?" Sophia's laughter was cold and heartless. "Liam has his reasons," she said. "And they have nothing to do with you, Emma. You're just a means to an end." Emma, now aware of the truth, her heart raced. Liam was playing her like a piece in a potentially fatal game. Emma felt her legs tremble upon hearing Sophia's icy remarks, realizing there was no going back for Sophia at this point. All she could hope for was for her next words to pierce through Sophia's cold and calculating heart. Sophia, you don't need to do this, this wouldn't bring you peace for all those years of bullying. Maybe you should try forgiving him she had told her. Sophia’s eyes darkened. Emma couldn't believe those eyes could get any darker until it did. She screamed at Emma and told her she couldn't understand the pain she had gone through and the trauma that bullying had caused her. Hearing this, Emma could only keep quiet because only she and her relations knew how close she was to being abused and bullied. So she couldn't understand why Liam and Sophia were so determined to bring him down. She couldn't believe Alex was capable of such brutality, though, despite all the other incredible things, that was the only thing that stood out to her. Emma nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard a loud explosion reverberating through the warehouse, as Sophia was about to present more damning evidence against Alex to support her accusations. The room fell totally dark as the lights fluctuated and eventually went off. With her eyes strained to see anything, Emma's heart pounded, but there was complete blackness. As time went on, she could no longer hear Sophia's footsteps reverberating through the warehouse. "Sophia, wait!" Emma called out, her voice trembling with fear. "Don't leave me here alone!" But Sophia didn't respond. Emma felt defenseless and abandoned as the darkness threatened to completely engulf her. Emma was trying to calm herself, and her breath came in quick spurts. She tried convincing herself that Sophia wouldn't abandon her in this horrible location and that she would return. But Emma started to lose hope as the minutes passed. Her skin crawled as the darkness seemed to close in on her. Unusual sounds filled her ears, creaks and groans that seemed to emanate simultaneously from everywhere and nowhere. Sophia, what's going on? Emma called out with a trembling voice. She heard no response to her question, then she realized she was alone in the darkness. Every noise, every squeak from the flimsy floor, sent her heart racing. Unexpectedly, a light in the distance emerged, and with every second that went by, it became closer and brighter. The light was so bright that Emma covered her eyes with her palms, nearly blinding her. Upon opening them once more, she saw a figure directly before her, but the light was so strong that she was unable to distinguish the person's features or face. With its features hidden by the intensity of the light, the figure seemed tall and menacing. The figure appeared to be cloaked in mystery, but Emma's heart pounded as she attempted to pick out any features. "Who are you?" Emma demanded, trying to keep her voice calm and steady. The figure didn't respond. Instead, it took a step closer, its presence filling the room with a horror that can only be felt in movies. The figure approached much closer, its light becoming more intense. Emma had the impression that it was consuming her, drawing her into a chasm of sorts. Emma's heart raced when she realized there was no way out of this and that she was stuck. Then, everything turned black, just as abruptly as it had appeared.
