Emma’s mind raced as she left the restaurant. She kept thinking of all sorts, she thought about why Alex hid that part of him from her despite knowing everything about her including how she was almost bullied.
She also thought of her deal with Liam and its consequences. Her thoughts were mainly consumed by this because she knew she had made a risky move. However, she only did it because she was desperate to protect Alex and his company from any harm at all costs.
As she waited for the taxi she ordered before leaving the restaurant, since she didn't drive, she couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to this than meets the eyes. She hoped the taxi would get here faster as her heart began racing with every thought and assumption in her head.
Just as the taxi got to where she was, her phone buzzed with a text, it was a text from another unknown number, but this time there was no way to know who it was from, unlike when Liam sent her a text about the date she just had with him.
She got into the taxi and opened the text.
“Emma, I know what you're trying to do, but you're protecting the wrong person. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th and Main tomorrow by 10 pm and I will reveal the truth about Alex’s past to you. Come alone and come prepared for the truth”.
Emma continued to ponder throughout the trip about the identity of the sender, her role in the overall scheme, and how she found out her name. All she wanted to do was take a shower and call it a day when she got home. But, by the time she got home, she had a migraine from all the various things racing through her mind. I will find out the answers to my question tomorrow, she said. I can't continue thinking about what ifs and the how's by myself. It wouldn't get me the answer. I should wait till tomorrow, she continued thinking.
After having that thought, Emma rode the elevator to the 13th floor, which is home to the penthouse she shares with her boyfriend. Emma was welcomed by the calming sound of jazz music playing in the background and the warm glow of dimmed lights as she unlocked the apartment door.
She walked to the restroom, her feet sinking into the plush carpet, leaving her bag and card on the marble countertop. The bathroom was a magnificent paradise, complete with gleaming marble countertops and floors, and a large walk-in shower with rainfall showerheads. Emma was absorbed in the enormous bathtub, which she had filled to the brim with burning hot water and scented oils. As she got into the tub, she felt the tension of the day melt away from her shoulders.
She closed her eyes and let out a big sigh while soaking in the bathtub, feeling the warmth permeate into her bones. She sat there for what felt like hours, her mind silent and her body comfortable. Finally, she emerged from the shower, wrapped in a soft towel, and made her way to her bedroom. Only a few candles flickered on the nightstand, lighting the room dimly.
Alex was already in bed, his gaze locked on her as she entered. Emma went beneath the covers, feeling the smoothness of the sheets wrapped around her. Alex wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close as they cuddled up together. The bed was a sea of pillows and blankets, a pleasant refuge in the midst of the bustling city.
Emma couldn't help but ask herself if staying with Alex was the right decision. As they fell asleep, Emma felt a sensation of calm sweep over her. This was her happy place, filled with luxury and love. She appreciated every second they had together and felt fortunate to have found Alex. She had no idea, though, that everything in her world was going to change drastically. She had only barely begun when she struck the bargain with Liam; she would soon become entangled in a web of lies and treachery. She would have to struggle for the truth, and her penthouse's luxury and security would be destroyed.
Though she was encircled by the opulence and splendor of Alex's apartment, she was only secure for the time being in his arms. Feeling the warmth and coziness of the bed surrounding her, she closed her eyes and sighed deeply. Peace and comfort filled her house. The calm, though, was fleeting. She did not realize the storm that was brewing outside as she fell asleep. The storm that would change her life forever.
The next day, Emma tried to brush off the text she got from the unknown number the previous night as a prank, but the message continued to linger in her mind all day. She kept telling herself it must have been sent to her by mistake or it was a prank, but who was she kidding? Despite all the efforts to get it off her mind, she just couldn't concentrate on anything other than the text at work, but luckily, she was her own boss, so she didn't have to bother about her boss finding out how distracted she was at work today.
As the night drew closer, she found herself beginning to get anxious. By 9 pm, she found herself driving towards the old warehouse which would take her at least 40 minutes to get to.
As she got closer, her heart began racing with anticipation, she began to wonder what she was going to find there and who the mystery figure behind the mysterious text was.
The vehicle headlights illuminated the worn letters on the sign that read "Abandoned Warehouse - Do Not Enter" as Emma drew her car up to the entrance of the abandoned warehouse. Her pulse was pounding with fear and excitement as she hesitated for a little while. She was beginning to regret coming here alone, even if she'd been told to do so.
The silence was overwhelming as she exhaled deeply and shut off the engine. Stepping out of the car, she checked to make sure it was securely locked before walking up to the entrance, her gaze sweeping the empty, black space. The old building creaked and the distant sound of a sleeping city was all that could be heard.
A musty stench wafted out as she pulled open the creaky door, causing her nose to wrinkle. She entered and took a moment to get used to the dim light. With only a few dim bulbs hanging from the ceiling, the warehouse seemed large and deserted. The scent of rot and dust was pervasive in the air.
Emma fumbled in her bag for her phone, her fingers trembling as she put on the flashlight. She thought she was in a horror movie because of the strange shadow the light made on the walls. She heard a noise behind her all of a sudden. Emma whirled around, her pulse pounding. That's when she saw it. A figure, tall and imposing, standing in the shadows
"Who are you?" Emma demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.
With a frightening scar-filled face, the woman stepped forward. "Hello, I'm Sophia," she began in a low voice that sent shivers down her spine. "I am here to ensure Alex is held accountable for his actions. I am the one who was bullied all these years.” So I wouldn't let you put a stop to I and my brother's plans."
Emma's heart skipped a beat as Sophia started talking, her words revealing a startling picture of dishonesty and treachery. However, just as Sophia was ready to present her another shocking proof, there was a huge noise in the warehouse, and then everything went dark.
