Dark Nights
✶Elizabeth's POV✶
The forest is silent except for the wind caressing leaves and the moaning of trees.
As I crouch in the branches of a tree, I attach my bow back onto my back and I tap my fingers on my dagger-the one Aiwin gave me-as I listen.
My black clothing keeps me hidden and warm tonight. None of my skin shows except for my eyes, my glowing werewolf eyes.
Ever since Jason donated blood to me to save my life, I experienced strange side effects. I knew Jason's glowing eyes were a trait of his and would appear every now and then, but I had no control.
Ever since I came to Fae colony with Aiwin, wounded and beaten, starving and malnourished, the Fae's have taught me that Jason's eyes help me see through the night and that my senses have heightened incredibly.
A branch brakes and I snap my focus in that direction, looking for anyone. I take my bow back into my hands, c*****g an arrow.
Perched up in this tree, balancing used to be such a task for me. I remember a time where pulling out my arrow while keeping my eyes on my target and keeping my balance all at the same time seemed near impossible for me. However, slowly I've been learning and getting better. My balance and aim becoming better every day, my stamina, endurance and muscle all building up after these months.
I search the dark forest with my vision looking for the source of the sound.
The Fae's love playing with me.
I search harder, looking or anything out of the ordinary. My eyes skim over a hawk sitting on a branch not too far from me and I stop to study the bird.
The eyes shift to a purple before returning to their normal animal ones and I smirk.
Bingo.
I pull the arrow back, aiming. Maybe just a bit off the top.
The arrow flies, flying right above the hawks head. It cries out, looking straight at me, it's eyes glowing before flying straight at me.
I put my bow back, taking my dagger out. The hawk cries, it's talons extended towards me. Before it makes contact the talons turn to hands and the hawk transforms mid way into it's fae body.
But I knew this was going to happen and his body collides with mine, pushing me over the tree and falling through mid air.
I bring my dagger forward, slashing skin before the ground hits me, knocking the air out of me. But I get up fast, dagger forward, throbbing in my hand.
"Not bad, Luna."
I face Yvette who wipes blood from his lip and looks down at the s***h on his arm unimpressed. His black hair camouflages him at night and his muscular frame shows through his armour. I thought he was quite intimidating when I first met him, and I still do. However he is not much taller then me and is about the same size as Aiwin. But he is Aiwin's brother, a prince all the same.
There are five fae princes; Aiwin: the oldest and heir to the throne, Kalan: the second eldest and the one who took Aiwins' place when he was gone. Yvette: the next in line and who I mainly train with and specializes in weaponry and fighting. Rowan: the prince who is good with animals and herbs and potions. And then theirs Balor who I've only met a couple times. He is mainly quiet and stays in libraries learning more and more.
Before, I was scared that I'd hurt them through full swords fighting, but it turns out a fae's skin is a lot more tougher then one would think.
"Don't call me that."
"It makes you angry, good.' Yvette examines. "Your enemy will use that to make you lose control. Almost everyone will know your past and what triggers your emotions so you need to learn to control it and use it to your advantage."
I grip my dagger tighter.
"What happened to Jason, liz?"
And just like that, like always, my grip loosens, my focus gone.
"Jason," I whisper.
And just like that, I failed training again. I put my dagger away, turning around back to the Kingdom.
"Liz."
I turn to face Yvette, to see his own sadness and a hint of disappointment. "He's gone, it's time for you to move on. You're letting him haunt you."
"Let him haunt me. I deserve it."
✶✶✶
As always, a knock comes at my door after I've come back from training. My room is quite different then what I had in the wolf colony and it still amazes me every day.
The walls are painted a soft blue and it the floor is open despite my gigantic bed and furniture filling it. An open balcony looks out at the amazing view of mountain and night sky, it's view always amazing me.
The door to my room opens and Aiwin walks in with a look of disappointment.
"I tried."
"You've been saying that for the four months we've been here. Every night it's the same."
"Does Yvette manage to mention any of the work I have been progressing on?"
"Yes. He has mentioned you have gotten better with your bow again and that your fighting has improved. But you're not mentally focused enough."
I face Aiwin, anger lacing my emotions. "I am very focused."
Aiwin raises a brow. "Oh really? So tell me, why do you hate your eyes so much?"
it was like a punch to the gut. A memory I didn't want to bring up. So when I don't answer, Aiwin does.
"Because after he donated his blood to you, to save your life, your eyes became like him and his wolf. You can't handle the memory."
I shake my head. "I can handle it."
"Then look in the mirror."
I turn on instinct, looking at the nearest mirror. And just like always, whenever my emotions arise, my eyes glow and turn into Jason's wolf's eyes.
I feel my chest ache, the hole that never healed in my heart hurting. I can feel the burn of tears rise, my lip quivering.
I look through the mirror to see Aiwin behind me; sad.
"Seeing you like this hurts me too, Liz," Aiwin whispers.
"I loved him, Aiwin." My voice cracks and I feel a tear slip down my cheek. "I loved him."
Silence follows but soon I feel Aiwin wrap his arms around me whispering into my ear. "I know."
