14. Just very unlucky

594 Words
We have just started December and the snow hasn't set a foot here. It doesn't seem to belong though, but I guess we just have to wait and see. Dandy is sleeping upstairs, while I am sitting in the kitchen looking out the window. Jodie offered to make me some breakfast, which is very kind of her. I like Dandy's family. They are very generous. William is relaxing, sitting on the couch reading his paper every day, or sleeping. His calmness makes everyone in this house, peaceful. It's such a quiet house, so it's easy to settle. Jodie and William are easy to talk to, but William is almost as silent as his daughter. I know Dandy talked before and that something happened to turn it off. It must have been awful since she just closed herself off like that. Not just for her, but for everyone. Her mother is worried, but she tries to hide it from her daughter. William, I don't know about him. He seems more like he has accepted it and is just waiting for her to be ready. I am more in the middle of Jodie and William. I am willing to wait for her to talk, but I am also worried. Dandy seems okay now, but I have been curious about her. Since I first saw her in the back of the classroom. The way she looked at me with her tense face. When she helped me to find my class, and now that there is something big story about her I don't know. If Dandy and I are going to be friends, then I kind of expect her to tell me something. I have been nothing, but accepting of her, but that is very easy when she is so caring and gentle. She is easy to like, which makes it so confusing that those at school says so awful things about her. Dandy can't defend herself since she does not talk. She can't say anything against it, but Dandy is not someone that argues. She just let it go. "Do you think Dandy will ever speak again?" I ask Jodie unexpectedly, and she stops everything she is doing and take a deep breath. "I don't know," She shrugs. "We all hope she will because she needs to. She hasn't even talked about..." She cut herself off and keep on cooking. Then she turns to me, smiling of her own thoughts. "I think if someone is going to make her talk again, it must be you." Her words make me raise my eyebrows in surprise. "Why would you think that?" I ask, confused, but she just smiles as she hands me the plate with eggs and bacon. It smells amazing. I smile as a thank you. "Because she likes you," She watches me, her eyes full of hope, and it makes feel unsure that she is expecting so much from me. "Jamie, you make her smile. We haven't seen her smile for a long time." She tells me so happy that my heart wants to beat out of my chest. "W-what if I can't?" I ask scared because I don't want to disappoint Jodie. Take away her big hopes and that light in her eyes. "I think you can. She just needs someone." Jodie's eyes turn to sadness by her own words. "It's horrible what they are saying at your school. She doesn't deserve it. Dandy is a good girl. A good friend," Jodie is staring at the table her whole face written in misery. "Just very unlucky."
