Chapter One ~ Waking up
Slowly he woke to the feel of sand under his body and an annoying stretching and burning feeling on his right wrist. Beside him lay a beautiful woman whose arm happened to be the cause of the pain. Inhaling slowly he tried to gather his thoughts and found them all to be a haze. ‘Who am I?’ he pondered trying to adjust his arm. All of his memories seemed to be a jumble but he didn’t seem to lack the knowledge of how to do complex tasks. Using his abilities to search her mind as she slowly began to wake he found that she too lacked the knowledge of who she was and what she was doing out here with him. Gently he moved her body out from on top of his and rubbed his arm she had been pulling on his arm a lot during the night. “Clearly you do not stay still when you sleep.” He whispered while trying to remove his arm from the tangled mess. The woman’s breathing was beginning to quicken as her mind drug her out of the sleep she had been in. He knew the exact moment she became fully awake because her brain lit up like fireworks in the sky. Her thoughts were jumping from topic to topic faster than his mind had. Looking at him she inspected him and started noting what she saw. To her, he was good-looking (he smirked at this), tall, and imposing, also she could not (try as she might) figure out how they got where they were, handcuffed to one another. “Who are you?” she asked eying him warily. “I wish I could tell you but honestly I don’t remember.” A puzzling look grew in her eyes as she tried to remember who she was as well as who he was and he smirked again at her troubled face. “What did you do to me?” she exclaimed trying to move away from him quickly only to jerk roughly on her wrist. “Take this off of me! And get away from me now!!” Before she could shriek again he placed his hand over her mouth. “I know what you’re thinking but I’m not going to hurt you. I have no idea why I am out here either but you don’t see me hollering about it. If you want to stay safe then you need to hush up and calm down. We don’t know who could be out there hunting us right now and our best bet is to relax wise we will end up in a mess.” Sighing she nodded her head and inspected him could he be as harmless as he looks? “So what do you suggest we do, oh wise one? There is sand all around us, no tracks to be found, and did I mention the sun is blazing and burning the sand beneath our feet.” “Wow someone’s a smart ass…all we have to do is think ok?! There has to be a city close by for them to have gone after they dropped us here.” “And you think wandering aimlessly through the desert will lead us to some city? You are crazy! Seriously I would rather scream and yell and have them come get me than die walking through this sandy wasteland. At least then there is some small chance I will be found and saved out here who really knows?!?!” she spits. “Fine you won’t have to wander,” he said swooping her up into his arms, “I’ll just carry you.” After a while of beating on his body trying to get him to drop her, she gave up. He told her the only way to get him to drop her was to bite or kiss him and she wasn’t about to touch him in any such way; so, she started talking to him hoping to get some dirt on him to use to her advantage. However, her plan was clearly failing as he seemed to know what she was thinking every step of the way. She was starting to wonder if he wasn’t hearing her every thought. Sighing she tried to focus on what was digging at the back of her mind but it seemed she couldn’t get it to unlock no matter what she tried. It was like the more she focused on her memories the harder it was for her to remember things she had remembered before like the fact that she had a reason to distrust this man for more than just the reason of not remembering who he is. “What are you?” she asked looking at his face. Scowling he shook his head, “I thought we went over this before-“ “You and I both know that there is more to you than you are telling me.” “And?? I don’t know everything about you. Why do I need to tell you everything I know about myself? How about this I will answer your question when you can answer the question as well.” “Ok…HEY!! Look a city!!” she yelled looking ahead. Suddenly she started scrambling to get out of his arms so that she could run, however, he tightened his grip to prevent her from leaving. “If you start running now it might wear you out and we can’t have you tired just in case.” “So once we get to the city you'll get this off me?” she asked while he walked towards the city on the horizon, holding up her handcuffed arm. “You know, I'm not happy about this either so will you give it a rest.” “I guess if you say so but can't you check for the key just in case?” “How do you know I have it?” “Because I don't remember putting them on anyone.” “I don't either so shut it already.” “Touchy, touchy.” The girl snarled at him. On the road ahead of them, a lone house stood out on the deserted landscape. "Curious and curiouser." The girl whispered hoping to hush her feelings of uncertainty. As they neared a house the woman sitting on her porch chuckled, “Hello.” the sight of two mortal enemies in each other's arms was almost too much. She'd done it! So many had doubted it could be done to two as powerful as these two but she'd done it. “Hi.” the girl replied quietly, being this timid felt wrong but she could sense something about the woman that made her think twice about her. “Y'all don't remember me do you?” The woman called back. “Should we.” The man called back. He'd set her down and placed himself between the girl and the woman. She smiled and replied, “Nope that's how the curse works.” she laughed. “You know, yesterday you would have killed her now you try to protect her.” “What are you talking about?” he asked in confusion eyeing the girl with a side glance. "Oh, vampire there's no way you hadn't had some sort of an inkling by now?" The woman crowed. Even with her obvious age, she was still beautiful she'd not been abusing her magic so whatever she'd done to them either her elders approved or barely disapproved. "Give the little slayer some time and she'll be right back to try to chop your head off instead of hiding behind you." Her laugh rang out as the girl reacted in a fit of panic and nearly broke both their wrists attempting to get away from him. “Would you stop that," holding out his uncuffed hand, he pointed his indexed finger at the girl, "-now I mean you no harm at this point, and you-" he pointed at the witch. "I'm sure you have some point to all this besides baiting the poor slayer." He was frustrated he didn't want to be here. Here seemed like a bad place to be and a nagging feeling in his mind said to run. "Alright, alright," she laughed there is a vehicle with all your information in it around the back. The cuffs you wear are bespelled they will come off when you need them too and I'll be around when need be, until then the court awaits Avril, dear." And with the beginning of a cat, she faded away. Rounding the old farmhouse they found an old jeep just as she said and in the glove box was their identification and in the back appeared to be their luggage. Had she planned this out really well or had they messed up that badly that she had been able to get the jump on both of them? He looked over his passport again Devin Lucas. The girl was Avril Navada, the name pulled at his mind it was important he knew in more ways than her slayer status. When he looked up from the little book she was grinning and holding the keys. "OHhhh no, no, no, no you're not driving." He stammered out before she simply lifted her right arm up causing his cuffed hand to follow. With her point clearly made there was no way for him to argue with that. They were wasting time and needed to get going, he wasn't sure what the time limit was but he felt like there was one.
