The two girls stared at me and stood side by side “I apologize if I made things worse. Um my locker is between you two could I get past?” I asked trying to break the tense and actually get to my locker. “are you new?” the girl Jaz called Lilly billy asked. “yea, I’m Elizabeth Mae. I also hate bullies. So I wanted to stop watching that happen. I hope I didn’t embarrass you.” “Tru… trust me… you didn’t.” The other girl said. “What are your names?” I asked. “I am Elaine, this is my best friend Lilly.” They both smiled and continued staring at me. “Do I have something on me?” “No no, it’s just since Jaz started here she’s been the mean one of the school and no one has been able to stand up to her.” Elaine answered. I looked between them. “since I am new I’m going to ask this quickly; do you want to be my friend. I don’t want to be alone if I don’t have to be. My sisters told me I’d be on my own here and they weren’t kidding. However I never realized why their reputation was so important until now.” The two girls looked at each other and smiled again. “ We would love to be your friend. Who are your sisters? What classes do you have? What’s your favorite color? Oh and movie?” “Lil, let her talk. Sorry she loves talking and is a bit of a energy package but I love her.” Elaine said with such kindness. “I’m glad you two will be my friends. The Evils top girls are my half sisters, please don’t tell anyone. My classes are English, world history, gym, math. I used to adore pink but now I’m blue all the way. I can’t pick a favorite movie but I love romantic movies. I love talking. I think this will be the greatest friendship in history.” The girls laughed and Elaine grabbed my schedule. “yay we are in all the same classes.” Lilly jumped and grabbed my arm pulling me towards our first class. Elaine pointed out that it was just down the hall from where we were. I watched my sisters, a couple of their girl friends, a few guys, and the prince go into the class she pointed to. I stopped dead just as the first bell went telling us to get to class. Lilly and Elaine stopped too since they were holding my arms. “Everything okay Girl?” Elaine asked while Lilly looked concerned “um when I first came into into the school I was watching the map map not where I was going an ran into a guy. He just walked into the class that we are going to. He was so proper and polite that I nicknamed him the prince. I don’t know if I can show my face to him that especially since Jaz is going to him be circling me for are weakness so she doesn’t get embarrassed by me again.” “awe your first crush yay and love that he already has a nickname. It’s better to shorten it so that it’s initials that way if anyone hears they think of actual names. So from now on say T.P.” Lilly said all excited. “You can do this Girl we got your back just like you have ours. Right Lil?” “Right El” with my girls at my side I walked into the class. “It’s assigned seats so you have to find your name” El told me. We looked and Lil found hers first in the first row then El pointed to my name in the second row, right behind Lil and showed me that she was in the third row right behind me. The three of us were in a column with someone beside each of us so that there were six in each column. The second bell rang causing me to jump and people rushed to sit down quickly. Someone slid in beside me right when the teacher walked in. “ Hello class I am Mrs Fair, your English teacher. If you don’t like your spot and have a good reason to move then I will listen if I agree we will come up with something else. If not you will have to deal with it. I will be calling out attendance so please answer when you hear your name.” I was so distracted by the teacher I forgot about the fact Jaz, Sky and the prince were I did class until I heard her call out “Jazmine Kaine?” “here” “Skylar Kaine?” “yup” How could I forget that I was in class with them? This is going to be a long year. I’m younger yet in the same grade. I just…’ “Samuel Valentine?” “Here” the voice answered from beside me. I’m sitting beside T.P. well Samuel Valentine. Now I know his real name at least. El and Lil will want to know that I’m sitting beside the guy that as Lil put it ‘my first crush.’ ‘I’m sitting next to a guy that I bumped into. He’s probably gonna be annoyed. Wow I suck.’ I started to panic about what he’ll do when he realizes who he’s stuck beside. “Elizabeth Mae?” “Present” I said quietly. “Elizabeth Mae?” the teacher said louder. Blushing I spoke up “present Ma’am” Mrs Fair smiled then continued with attendance. “So your name is Elizabeth Mae. Good to know the name of the person I collided with earlier.” Samuel whispered. “Nice to meet you by name, Samuel.” I whispered back with a smile. “Okay class, look at your groups, when there are group assignments these are your group. When partners are needed your elbow partner is who you work with. I want you to get to know your group.” As soon as she finished speaking the noise level grew with chairs moving and students talking. “Isn’t this great? We are in the same group.” Lil said happily. “Let’s do names so we can get to know each other.” I said. El and Lil looked at each other then at the boys, sharing a smile. “I guess I am showing my newbie quality huh?” I said with a laugh. Samuel smiled “Hello, I am Sam. I like to learn and I play sports and have been going to S.B.H.S since last year. I was home schooled before I came here.” “Hey, I’m John, I like sports and I’m good at them. I’ve been going to school, both homeschooling and this school with Sam ever since I can remember.” “Hi, I’m Elaine.” Lil looked at El and said “You are El and you would rather talk to one person then a large group.” ‘Yea I’m El and I am shy but I’m workin on it. I’ve been in a regular school system since kindergarten. Lil and I skipped grade to” “Hey, I’m Alex . I am the third musketeer to Sam and John, I’ve been in regular school all my life. I met Sam and John last year.” “Hiya, I’m Lil. I’ve been El’s friend since kindergarten. I apologize if I annoy any of you how hyper I am sometimes.” the group then looked at me expectantly. “Hello everyone? I’m Elizabeth Mae, but you probably know that since Mrs Fair said it twice. I have been tutored since I was 3, I love learning and even though I am only twelve I am in grade ten with 13 and 14 year old. Oh also, I expect to continue to do very well in my work so I apologize if I push hard on work.” “Is there a short form for your name?” Sam asked me. “No. Not one that stuck. No one has really been around me to give me one or even wanted to.” I answered. “Not even your sisters or your parents?” El asked. “My sisters said El-Mae when I was 6 but they never used it again. My Momma calls me Darling. And I don’t have a Father in the picture… if you want to give me a short form I’m willing to hear what is chosen.” Everyone smiled and started thinking about short forms or nicknames. “Well you are a quiet group, what are you all doing?” when no one answered I spoke “they are thinking of a short form for my name. We already introduced ourselves and they knew each other and told me about their schooling and their things.” Mrs Fair smiled “Wonderful, if you like it I will put it down so that is what you are called. I am looking forward to seeing how you work as a group. I have high hopes and expectations for this group as a whole and each of you as an individual.”

“Yes, I believe we will do very well, we are all strong minded and since each of us have our own specific strengths it will help us have a stronger cover over everything that can get thrown at us.” Mrs Fair nodded along with what I said. “Perfect. I’ll leave you to your group. Good luck.” Then she left to talk to another group. “So did you guys come up with a nickname for me yet?” I asked my group. “Alex and I thought of calling you Liz Mae,” Lil said with a quick smile to Alex . “That doesn’t suit her,” Sam said quickly. “What about just calling her Mae?” El said “No it should have both names somehow.” Sam said, disagreeing again. “Do you have an idea then Sam?” John asked. “It hasn’t come yet but it will.” Sam said with confidence. I just sat there smiling.“You know I think this group is going to be the best thing that happened since we are probably going to become great friends.” I said then whispered to Sam since he was beside me “I think Lil and Alex are going to date. She’s been sharing a bunch of smiles and flirty glances.” “I know he likes her so I hope it works out for them. It looks like Johnny will get his crush too since he and El look all cuddled together.” He whispered back with a small laugh. “I hope they are happy both couples look so cute together.” I whispered happily. ‘If only it was that easy for me’ when Mrs Fair got everyone’s attention and told us that class was over in 5 minutes I was shocked on how fast time passed. “What’s your next class?” Sam asked me. “Us girls have World History with Miss Smith.” I answered. “Awesome, so do the guys and I,” Sam said with a smile. “Oh hi annoyings. Hey Sam I hope you will sit next to me whenever you have the chance. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off last year. I sure did enjoy having you as mine.” Jaz said from right behind me. I watched El and Lil turn white as John and Alex rolled their eyes then widened them. “Yea, we miss having you boys, we were the hottest couples at Sandy Bay High School.” Sky added, while another girl nodded towards Alex . El and Lil looked like they were shrinking and I felt so bad for them so I stood up fast causing my chair to push Jaz back, which led to Sky and the other evil to back up. “Well it looks like John and Alex moved past your evil-selves Skylar, and whoever you are. And Sam said he was going to hang with us ‘annoyings,’ as you called us, so that he could have actual conversations. Sorry to burst your bubble Jazzy.” I said, getting annoyed with how rude my sisters were. “Wow El-Mae you are just causing so much trouble. I wonder what Mr Steve would say to you bullying the head cheerleader and her cheer-ettes. I’m going to have to go talk to him.” Jaz said trying to be tough. “Why don’t we all go to him?” I asked, not scared of her threat. Behind me I heard El suck in a breath and wondered how often Jaz played victim to the principal. “You’ll regret that,” Jaz said smugly. Right at that moment the bell rang “let’s see then lead the way we’ll follow you Queen bee.” I said confidently. Jaz and her ‘cheer-ettes’ grabbed their things as did my group. “Are you sure you know what you are doing?” El asked me. “Positive, Jaz will try to pin this on us not the boys but the boys can support us if we need it. I know John and Alex will.” "Will Sam? He might be the swing vote” Lil said joining the conversation quietly. ‘Why would Sam be the swing vote? Does he have status here? Okay stop thinking about it and reassure your friends.’ “i know that Sam will do the right thing.” I said with a smile even though I had no idea what was coming.
