Mrs. Chang lived in a trailer that stood in a forest in an enchanted meadow. Here she saw her otherworldly clients. For everything else, she was a voluntary midwife at the nearby hospital with a small, eclectically furnished office in town. A tiny, wiry, ancient woman with long white hair and a wrinkled face. She awaited them on the front steps of her trailer. “You, yes,” she beckoned to Jack. “You, no,” she told Callum firmly. “First time visit, pregnant person only. Father, wait outside.” Callum couldn’t even blink fast enough before the door was slammed in his face and he stood on the outside.
