Escape
“Mom where are we going?” An eight-year old child, clasping her stuffed toy over her chest asked her mother with curiosity. Her dark brown eyes are fixed to an average height, slender, blacked haired woman, clothed with her grey leathered jacket, tight jeans and a pair of boots.
An explosion just happened on the West Side. Please stay inside your houses. Our government is doing its best to solve this matter. Please wait for further instructions and secure yourselves.
Both of them hurriedly packed their things inside their luggage. Their dog named Amber howled and bark several times, almost filling the cobbled streets with its sounds. The child looked over their white glassed window and saw a large mass of fowls coming from the forest, flying towards the city, joining the pitch-black smoke from above, barely letting them see the blue sky a while ago.
“Go get, Amber. We’re going.” The woman said as she grabbed the pistol from her drawers and carefully put it inside her pocket. The child carried her doll and did what she’s being told an d headed to the cage just a few steps from the lady.
"Everyone is going crazy and losing control! Pl-ease stay inside your houses. L-lock y-your doors. R-remember…don-t go…n-ear----“
“M-mom…” The child suddenly, coldly froze in her position. She turned her gaze and saw her daughter breathed deeply, making her shoulders moved up and down. She felt the danger and sinister crippled around her. From a distant, she witnessed a hideous man in his mid-40's standing still next to her child. It’s almost the man turned into a lifeless person with severe bruises covering all over his body and blood was flowing through his nose. He barely moved an inch. He was just staring at the child. She slowly made some smaller steps towards her daughter, but later on she recognized a pistol being held towards the child by the man. He suddenly burst into laughter. The devil was woken up from his deep sleep and was ready to take another life given from above.
“The…e-end is near…No...o-one…will survive…but me!” His laughter was vicious and lunatic.
Without any hesitations, she moved her feet and ran towards her child, holding all her might to save her as she reached out her hand unto her daughter. But in a split second of time, all went peach black and all she could hear was the trigger from the pistol being pulled. She saw the stuffed toy fell directly on the floor. She had, indeed, barely the lightest source of hope to soothe her pain crippling from within. With her screams of agony, she pulled the gun from her pocket and pointed it directly at the man. It was not a person but a demon she was facing. She took the courage and with a flash she decided to take the life of the man. A gunshot was being fired inside her house.
The woman fell on her knees, as the tears rapidly fell on her cheeks. She held the young child on her arms. The teddy bear was now covered with blood. No mother would want her family to die, especially her child to see death at an early age. But to Catheryne, she was a witness on how death took the life of her daughter, Atarah. It was the first time she cussed in blaming the gods who could have protected such an innocent person.
Catheryne
They killed me. No one was there to save or lend me some help. I was alone in that sorrowful moment, having my child being held lifeless on my lap. I couldn’t protect her from those beings taken from evil.
Catheryne
It’s been six months already, and we're still dealing this load of crap being scattered everywhere. And I am still, every inch of my body still… baring the memories of Atarah. The world was totally devastated – an opposite of what I’ve seen before – it was turned into a dreadful one. Even those who are still living felt dead together with those corpses lying freely with their bloodshed on the cobbled streets. The government was shut down by its own selfishness. They can’t do anything now. All of us are in total despair and have the selfish act to do anything to survive.
“Catheryne! Wake up. We're here.” A woman wearing a black leathered mask shook me by the shoulder. I glanced at her and realized we’ve already arrived at our destination, the Hospital.
“Get yourself a grip and don’t do anything unnecessary for this mission. Remember we’re here to get that thing. Am I clear?” She added and patted me on the shoulder.
Everyone was all armoured and was ready to engage outside. Deep inside we all hope that things will be done according to what was planned. Sitting over the edge of the truck, I looked for my rosary and stared for it for a while, letting me feel the lightest source of luck from the gods. At some time, I wanted to ask for help from above and hoped that they can lend us some help.
“Always remember, do whatever it takes to get that…even if it will cost your life.”
“Yes, Ma’am!” Everyone said steadfastly.
After some minutes, the truck stopped by the corner just a few meters away from the Hospital’s entrance. The surrounding was peaceful enough to make yourself annoyed of the silence crippling around. The wind blew swiftly to us, calling ourselves to be dragged inside the unknown creatures who await us inside.
“Let’s go and be careful. We’ve done this before.”
Everybody started to walk towards the entrance. I’ve decided to walk behind the others who are wearing the sense of courage and determination, carrying carefully the black case. It’s been quite some time when I decided to set my feet in this mission. It was the only way I got the chance to attach myself to an environment that is at least can be safe for me to settle in. My goal is to have a breakthrough in our current positions.
“Catheryne, are you ready?” She looked at me with some worries plastered on her face. Totally, I knew she wanted me to turn back this time because of the risk we are taking. This is not the right time to get filled with your emotions, woman.
“Don’t give me that look, Isabela. You know I’m here because I wanted to. You don’t need to babysit me this time. If I won’t get my luck this time, better say to him thank you for not making me just like those corpses.” I winked and followed the others inside.
The entrance door was already unlocked, giving us the expectations that the others were here for the same goal in searching for the cure. Soft tapping sounds were heard from the second floor. We passed by the main lobby. The place is completely a melancholic scenery to look at. Deceased, some were burnt, totally lifeless, patients scattering all over the hall, shattered glasses, red lights and an unbearable sense of sinister are following us from behind. We suddenly stopped by a white door covered with splatters of blood. Isabela slowly opened it and saw the different kinds of drugs all over the shelves – a total mess instead. At the right side of the room, is a table with some laboratory experiments regarding with the drugs. There was a blue vial at the corner. Isabela slowly went to it and carefully examined the thing, while the others are on guard.
“We found it.”
