Elisa (‘Joy’)
I hear a hard knock at the door, it’s already morning.
“Come in, the door is open.” I say getting off bed.
“It’s me, sis, mom, and dad want you down for breakfast.” Erika says and leaves immediately without even waiting for my reply.
I head for a shower, freshen up and come out to dress up. I can’t really find anything to wear, these clothes don’t seem like mine. Hell, nothing seems like mine here, maybe it’s because of my memory loss. I have been afraid of looking in the mirror too, I don’t even know how I look like.
I take deep breaths as I am uncovering my mirror. I wonder who covered it, though. I stare back at the brown-eyed girl staring back at me, she is unfamiliar, but I will get to know her. I comb my black hair before heading downstairs. What surprises me is the fact that I don’t seem to look like any of the three downstairs. I am too short, and small, they are tall with striking features. My supposed sister looks gorgeous, I am average.
“Miss Joy, your family is on the patio having breakfast.” Some girl says, I guess she is a servant or something, I don’t pay much attention to her, though.
“Thank you.” I say politely following her. I think I haven’t been outside for so long because the moment I step out of the door, the sudden light blinds me, I close my eyes and open them slowly adjusting to it.
“Hey, there you are.” Rosa says, getting up and giving me a tight hug, Dan does the same. The breakfast table is soiled with so many dishes.
“Isn’t this too much, Rosa?” I ask taking a seat next to Dan.
“Rosa? Why aren’t you calling me mum?” she asks with a hint of emotion.
“Sorry, I am not used to it yet, it's actually so new and weird for me.” I say honestly.
“It's fine darling, don’t worry, we are just glad you are safe.” Dan interjects.
We have our breakfast, I eat a bite of everything, and after that, I request them to let me take a walk for a while. Dan says it isn’t a good idea, but I insist and promise not to go far. I can’t just stay cooked up in the room like that.
“Aren’t you forgetting something, darling?” Dan asks as I set to leave.
“What?”
“This?” he smiles, handing a camera to me.
“You loved taking photos of nature and all.” He adds.
“Really?” I take it from him smiling, I am thrilled to actually know something about myself. “How does it work, Dan?” I ask excitedly.
“If I teach you how are you going to work that memory up, huh? I know you will figure it out, my darling.” He says, hugging me and helping to place the camera around my neck. “Now go have fun.” He says before kissing my forehead lovingly. I guess I must have been his favorite.
As Dan said, I get the hang of it faster, I start clicking photos of trees, flowers, and everything beautiful I can find. I can’t explain the happiness I am feeling right now. I feel so free, and I don’t want to go back home.
Speaking of home, I can’t even see the house from behind me, I think I went too far from home. Oh no, how am I going to find my way back now. I realize that I am in a forest with tall trees and no clearing to see side by side. My heart starts thumping so fast, I look around, and I don’t even know the direction I came from.
“What is that.” I ask when I hear some clattering as if someone is stepping on the dry leaves.
“Is someone out there?” I ask, trying to gather courage. I place my camera back on my neck and close the lens. I bend forward and tip toe towards the noise. I can’t run because I wouldn’t know where to run to. If it's danger, then I am going to face it head on.
“You better show yourself, I am not afraid of you.” I say, walking closer to the noise. As I am approaching, an enchanting scent grows stronger and intoxicating.
“What’s that smell?” the more the noise grows louder, the more the scent grows, I can now hear a heartbeat. Weirdly, I didn’t feel afraid, my whole body seems to want to see where the scent is originating from.
I finally a foot approaching from under the trees. It’s a person. Oh! no!
“Who is there.” the person asks, his voice sends shivers down my spine. I stand rooted on the ground, just waiting for them to surface.
“OMG, is it really you, or I am dreaming.” My brain freezes by the sight before me, it’s a man, even with my memory loss, I think I have never seen such an attractive person in my life. My mouth falls wide open when he starts walking towards me, his beautiful face turns emotional and his hands starts to tremble as he extends them towards me.
“I can’t believe this, I have looked for you everywhere.” A tear escapes his eyes as he approaches me. In fear, I walk backwards and away from him.
“Are you afraid of me, Elisa? It’s me.” he says, more tears streaming down his hazel eyes. Why is he crying? And why does his tears affect me?
“Please don’t come near me, I am Joy.” I say when my back hits a tree trunk. I have nowhere to go since he is standing inches away from me.
“No Elisa, you are mine, my Elisa. My mate.” He says.
“Mate?”
“Yes you are my mate, don’t you remember me?” he asks, stopping his hands in midair. I shake my head. Why did I stop him from coming close to me when my body craves to be near him? I am so foolish.
“please don’t fear me, Elisa, it's breaking my heart.”
“I am sorry.” I raise my hand to wipe his tears.
“It’s me Troy, your Troy.” My hand drops immediately after hearing his name. Is he the one who caused me to be in this state?
“Don’t come near me.” I walk sideways away from the tree I was leaning on, and without looking back, I run. I run in a direction I don’t know about.
