"Henry Alex Mczander," I heard Mom sing in the wee hours of the morning. My door swung open and standing in my doorway was my annoyed older brother shooting daggers at me. I stretched and smile, happy that my mom was home from work safely. I itched my side and rolled out of bed. I followed Henry downstairs and saw my mom wearing the biggest smile on her face. It was probably around two in the morning and I should be asleep right now but I wanted to see her before I went off for the weekend.
Henry groaned as he glanced at mom's phone. "Hi mommy," I cheesed as I hugged her. "Munchkin, Your hair looks like a bird's nest." She teased as she leaned forward to kiss my cheek. I rolled my eyes playfully and sat on the sofa with my hands folded under my chin. Mom was barely home and for the most part, it sucked. She did all she could do to be there for us on our birthdays and other important days in our lives and kept everything well balanced between her personal and work life. She flopped down on the sofa next to me and looked over at Henry who had his arms crossed over his chest and was sporting a frown.
"It's about damn time you guys got together. Sheesh, the tension was too thick my own knives couldn't cut through it." Mom joked and Henry rolled his eyes. "I was easing into it, I didn't want to scare her off." Henry said and mom scoffed, "That was not going to happen," She said and I agreed. After a few minutes of back and forth between my brother and mom, she turned her attention to me and asked the unthinkable,
"When are you going to be stepping up to the plate munchkin?" She asked. Henry raised his brows and smirked "Yeah, when are you going to get a boyfriend, " He teased and I rolled my eyes, "I'll have you know that I take my education life seriously and will not be in a relationship until after college." I said confidently. Henry snorts and Mom frown "Oh boo! You suck," She teased and I laughed. "Shouldn't you be encouraging my behavior?" I asked and she raised her brows,
"Which one? Skipping school spontaneously or putting your education?" She asked and I chuckled. Of course, Martha told my mom about my double arcade trips during school hours. "The latter," I replied and she shrugged, "I should but I'm not a party-pooping mom. Besides, you might someone worthwhile in school," She said and I laughed. Henry dismissed himself saying that he had a date this weekend and the last thing he needed was us to ruin it. Like that was even possible. Summerly Blue is head over heels for my brother, a blind man can see that.
"What about you munchkin, Any plans for this weekend?" She questioned as she stood from the sofa, I glanced at the clock and shrugged. It's only three in the morning, "Yeah, I'll be gone all weekend actually, My friends invited me to cabin vacay." I said and she raised her brows, "How come I haven't met these friends? Are you scared of them being scared away because I'm a lawyer?" She asked with a slight frown. I laughed "It's been rocky lately," I admitted and she sat down on the sofa again, intrigued.
"What happened?" She asked and I shook my head, "It's kind of over with now." I said brushing the past off of my shoulder, I've dwelled on that particular event for a bit too long. Mom raised her brows, "Either you tell me or I ask Summerly or Henry." She said and I sighed. My mind now racing as I thought of the stupid situation.
I smiled weakly as I started at the beginning.
"So the party you let me go to on that one Friday, It kind of started off great. I was the party mom, and I was helping one of my friends who was basically f****d off of alcohol into his room and sort of mommy tucked him into bed. I left the room and sort of bumped into my friend's friend and he apologized for insinuating some disgusting things between Henry and I. Then his girlfriend saw me and blatantly accused me of taking advantage of my drunken friend in front of everyone, which did not happen ... I'd eat two pounds of nails before sleeping with him. But she noticed people weren't really reacting to this bogus accusation, mainly because everyone knew that my friend has a type," Mom put her left hand and I stopped talking.
"Who is this lovely girlfriend?" She asked sarcastically with a slight tilt of her head. I rolled my eyes. I knew where this was going, My mom is driven by emotion and is the best lawyer in the city ... the power she's gained from this did nothing but increase that drive. "Can I finish it? That was nothing compared to what happened next," I said and she crossed her arms over her chest, waiting for me to continue.
"She waited until I was alone and away from my new friend, who I guess she's scared of, to strike. She managed to persuade at least ten to twenty people to dump their drinks on me, degrade me by calling me names, and because I'm the bigger person that I am, I ignored her and everyone. I was still trying to get Summer and Henry together. Eventually, she took notice and waited for one of the two to move before sending someone in to sabotage the entire thing. Henry went to get them both drinks or something and when he returned to her, Summerly was lip-locking with some other dude. I mean it wasn't consensual but it happened and Henry got upset and the dude said I sent him. I don't even know who he was, I was slightly distracted by the girl and her next move. So the next thing I knew, Henry was fighting. Summerly was in my face screaming and crying. And all while this is happening, I could hear the girl and her friends laughing as it all unfold." I said with an annoyed shrug.
My mom chewed on her bottom lips and sighed "Why didn't you pull the bratty 'My mom's a lawyer' card?" She asked and I shrugged, "Her dad's super-rich, Why bother." I said and Mom sighed again while running her hands down her face, "Gosh I raised a smart idiot." She mumbled and I frowned slightly, "What? how?" I asked. How am I an i***t?
"Because Brooklyn, If her parent is as rich as you say, They would have come knocking on my door to hire me." She said slowly for me. I sat there frozen.
I'm an i***t.
