Chapter 3

Lucas pov

The day went on like any other day. And it came in the afternoon. The afternoons are spent seeing more appointments. Sick and injured animals are examined and evaluated for stability. If an animal appears critical or needs to be monitored overnight, it is referred to the emergency clinic. This requires the transfer and cooperation of the owner, but most owners are more than willing to take the extra step. The afternoon treatments are done for hospital cases, the phone calls are returned, and the final notes are recorded before the end of the day. Once the clinic is closed, most veterinarians go home, and many continue to think about the day's events; they prepare for tomorrow. I always stay last to make sure my little patients are comfortable and that everything is going well. It was already 9 in the evening outside in the dark, and it had already started to rain. I'm ready to close up when I hear the ringing when the door opens. I turned around, and I froze

"Hello, I'm sorry I know it's too late, but I found this little guy injured on the way. And I learned that you are the only one in town who will take care of it." The most beautiful girl I've ever seen in my life, all wet and scared to hold a puppy.

"Hello. I'm happy to help. Hey little guy, what happened to you? I'm Dr. Anterson, but you can call me Lucas. Let me take him."

"I'm Anna Swan. I was driving my car, and I saw him on the side, trying to get up. I felt bad and wanted to help him. I had heard that only this clinic accepts strays, and here I am, "she says with a laugh at the end. I take my little friend in my arms and go to the doctor's office. "I don't have any problem, I always want to help, and our friend needs it," I carefully leave the puppy on the medical table and start cleaning the wounds. This is the beginning of crying, and my sweet Anna says.

"I can do something to help? I can't hear him crying," she says sadly. My Anna? When did this happen?

"Unfortunately, the drugs hurt a little. You can sit next to him and talk to him. He seems to have liked you already." She laughs

"You think?" She answers with a smile, "You don't see him? He only looks at you. I don't blame him if you want my opinion. You saved him." she looks at me and smiles. Oh god, what a wonderful smile that is! I could look at it my whole life and never get bored.

"I didn't do anything that anyone would do," I sigh

"Don't say that. Many would let him die on the side of the road alone." she lowers her head

"You're right. There are still heartless people," she says, and I see that she is being held so as not to cry. Maybe she has bad memories.

"It will be alright?" She tells me, trying to change the subject.

"His wounds will close. His leg is broken. We will also do an x-ray to see the damage. He may need surgery.”

"Okay, so I'll wait."

"You don't have to. You can leave. I'll take care of him.."

"No, no, I'd like to be here. If he needs surgery, I'd like to know when so I will be here." I smile.

"I mean, if I could, I would like to keep him when he recovers. I'll pay the expenses, of course," I look at Anna and the puppy.

"You bond already?" she smiles at me. "You could say that" she smiles

I started the test, and I got the X-rays. As I feared, he wanted surgery. I arranged it in a room in the clinic and went to my office, where I had Anna waiting for me.

"As I feared, it would require surgery, but it's not serious. With proper monitoring and care, it will be able to run like any other puppy."

"This is wonderful news, thank you very much. How much will it cost for everything? And I'm sorry I kept you up late. I'm sure the owner of the clinic will pay you well," she tells me and smiles. Wow, she thinks I'm an employee. Not the unjust. I may be the only owner of a clinic who is leaving last.

"Don't worry about it. I like what I do whenever I'm happy to sit down to take care of this little guy," I tell her and start making notes about the surgery.

"I'll have the surgery tomorrow morning if you can be here. We'll talk about the costs afterward. But don't worry about the expenses. Since you will keep him later, the clinic makes discounts, "I say with a small laugh.

"Sure, it's the clinic's policy."

"Ok. Do you need anything from me, data you want for the charge, for the adoption later?"

"We will arrange these tomorrow. I will only need a name and a phone number now to let you know how it is doing," she tells me her details, and I remember that her name seems familiar to me.

"What do you do for a living? Sorry, but your name seems familiar to me."

"It’s fine. I'm a kindergarten teacher in the Oasis kindergarten. Do you have children who go there?" Alice's new colleague Alex and Fiona's teacher, my nephew, and my niece. What a small world Alice's colleague is trying to put us together and the teacher of Alex and Fiona who always says how beautiful and good she is. Now that I have met her, they are not wrong. It is fate.

"Oh," I see her a little hurt

"Can't you imagine how small the world is? Are you the teacher of Alex and Fiona Anderson?"

"Yes..."

"She's my niece and nephew, and your colleague Alice is my best friend's girlfriend," I laugh. She laughs and answers

"Small world indeed" We both laugh

we look at each other for a long time, and suddenly he speaks

"I'd better go. I will see you tomorrow," she gives me her hand.

"I'm thrilled that I met you. Alice, Fiona, and Alex were always talking about you in the best of words."

"I have to thank them then."

"Sorry, I didn't have to give you something to change. You are wet."

"it's ok. I'm going home now. I'll be fine" I accompany her to the door where we say goodnight, and she leaves

Something tells me that we will continue

After an hour, I'm home, and I can't stop thinking about Anna. For the first time in my life, I feel this way about a woman. When I saw her, I had it in my mind. I decided to send her a message. Damn, what is happening to me? Until I fell into bed, I didn't see an answer to the text, and she probably fell asleep. I'll see her tomorrow anyway; I can't wait. How did the hours pass until I saw her again?
