My eyes widened when a strong wind struck the girl. She flows to the air. As if she were hit because it threw her on the other side of the room. It dumbfounded all my classmates about what happened.
“Ouch! My back!” The girl started crying while she was touching her back.
That is when we get back to our senses. Her friends rush to help her. I was looking at them while my mouth was wide open.
“OMG… Cassie, your powers!” Kikay shouted excitedly.
I looked at her confusedly. Power? What is she saying? When I looked at my classmates, they were all shocked while looking at our classmates. Then they all look at me. I frowned at them. Why are they looking at me like I committed a crime?
I slowly step backward while shaking my head. My heartbeat beat fast. I did nothing, but why do I feel guilty?
I immediately get my things that fall to the ground and walk fast out of the room. That is when I realized that some of our schoolmates are looking at the commotion inside. I just walk hurriedly.
“Yiee! Your power is showing up, Cassie!” Kikay said while dancing.
I always knew I was different. I could see Kikay, a fairy that a normal person couldn't see. I also could see other elemental beings. Also, I could see some ghosts and other unusual things. But I only think that it's because my third eye is open. That's what I saw on the television. But powers? Seriously?
I hurriedly walk as I go out of our building without minding everyone. It is time to go home; that is why most of the students are going out now. As I walk, I can’t stop thinking about what happened. Is it really me who did that? But how?
It’s impossible.
I don’t know about my parents, so; I don’t know who I really am. Tiya Jesse is there, yes. But I still something is missing.
“Cassie!” Kikay called me. “I know now why your powers are showing up. Your birthday is coming!”
I hesitantly look at her while still walking. I just remember, my birthday is coming at the end of the month. I just shrug and look back my way. I am now walking on the sidewalk outside our university. It’s already afternoon, and most people are on the streets because they are also going home. I could smell every person I pass.
“We should get ready, Cassie!” Kikay said again. “Wait! I said we should go to the shop now! I need a new dress! Especially now that your birthday is coming!”
I took a deep breath, trying to control myself. The annoyance I am feeling towards her is rising again.
“Cassie! That is not the way to the store!”
I stop walking when Kikay flies to my face to stop me from entering our street. I glared at her.
“Will you stop!?” I shouted. Kikay’s eyes widened, and look at me full of shock. “Can’t you see I don’t want to go?!” I am not always like this, but she’s too stubborn. She doesn’t listen to me!
Kikay stays still and didn’t make any words. Kikay is just looking at me confusedly. I look around and saw everyone was looking at me with confusion on their face. When I look at Kikay again, her tears are flowing from her eyes.
“I-I just wanted you to have a new dress. I also want you to be happy,” she pouted. “I am sorry,” she said, then she disappears.
I took a deep breath and walked again. Whatever. Kikay is always like this; she walks out then comes back again after a few minutes. I walked again ignoring other people criticizing looks. I'm not too fond of this kind of feeling.
Tiya Jesse is not at home when I arrive. I pass to our living room and goes to my room. I put my backpack beside my bed and let my tired body fall to the bed. I sighed and closes my eyes. I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened earlier.
Did I really do it?
I sit down again and look at my table where my favorite book is located. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I don’t know what I am doing, but I have to be sure. I cleared my mind and thought about my book. It’s a book that my Tiya Jesse gave me last year.
After a few seconds, I felt like my body lit. So I opened my eyes, and It shocked me because I heard something falls to the floor. I immediately crawled down to my bed and saw my book on the floor.
O.M.G!
I took the book and looked at it. It floats! It’s on my table before I close my eyes, and then now it’s on the ground!
“Whoa…”
I can’t believe this. But how? Does it mean that I really do it earlier? Was it me? Now, I am confused.
“Cassie?”
I cringed when I heard my Tiya Jesse’s voice. Then I heard her footstep going inside our house. I put my book back on my table and goes out of my room.
“Tiya.”
Tiya Jesse smiled at me. She is holding an empty basket. I guess her ‘balut’ is sold out again. It is an exotic food made from a steamed duck egg with an embryo. It is popular in the City.
“You’re here,” she said. I could see her chest going up and down. She’s like this because she just walks around our barangay to sell balut. She puts the empty basket at the table and sits down on the wooden chair.
Tiya Jesse has been selling balut since I was young. We get our food from her small business. Sometimes, I help her market, but most of the time, I can only help her cook it. I’ve been swamped in our school because our fourth quarter is coming. I must finish my projects.
I immediately opened the electric fan beside our small television; it is an old version only. I pointed it to her.
“Thank you,” she said with relief. She closes her eyes and leaned his back to the backrest of the chair. Then she removes her cap.
I smiled while looking at her. I go to our kitchen, get a glass of water, and then give it to my Tiya Jesse. She immediately took it and drank it.
Tiya Jesse made a relief sound effect after she drinks the water.
“Thank you, Cassie! This weather is really making me weak. It so hot!” she said while pumping her clothes in her chest.
It’s true because we are in a tropical country.
I smiled at her and sat down in front of her. “Ahm… Tiya Jesse, can I ask you something?”
Tiya Jesse’s forehead wrinkled, and look at me. “What?”
I took a deep breath and looked away from her. I just want to know the truth because I am baffled right now.
“C-Can you… Can you make some things float in the air?”
Tiya Jesse stops what she is doing and looks me in the eye. I just stay still and waited for her answer. If I can do things, then she can also do it. I am her niece, after all. We should have the same skills.
“Tiya?” I called her.
“Cassie… are you okay?” she said with a serious voice.
I looked at her confusedly, then I nodded. Of course, I am okay. I am very okay! Much, much okay.
She didn’t make a word and just a look at me. Then after a while, she laughs. She laughs hard. As in, she almost loses her breath because of laughing hard.
“Oh my God, Cassie!” she said, teary-eyed. “If I can do that? Then my back wouldn’t hurt because of this basket!”
I bit the back of my lips and smiled hesitantly. “A-Are you sure?” I asked again.
Tiya Jesse tried to calm herself down. “Of course I can’t! No one can do it unless you’re not normal!” she said with a firm tone.
I tried to laugh so that I could hide my embarrassment. I shouldn’t ask Tiya Jesse that question! It’s true; you’re not normal if you can float things in the air.
Then, does it mean I am not?
