I was quickly buzzing around my room trying to get ready for this dinner tonight. I had told the Wong's and Jackson last night after we had finished giving him his gifts. The Wong's initial reaction was disappointment at the already planned out plans being altered but they knew how important this was to me. Even Jackson, the official birthday boy, didn't make much of a fuss about it. I had bought a new outfit earlier today to make me look responsible for the occasion. I even curled my extremely long tresses and held them back with a black headband. I put a few hair ties in my purse in case my hair became unmanageable.
I looked at the time and saw that it was already six. I ran out of my apartment just barely managing to remember to lock the door this time and hopped in my car. Since I was nervous, it took me a few tries to get the key into the ignition. When I finally did, I peeled out of the parking lot and drove as quickly as was legal to where the twins were staying. I arrived ten minutes early. I got out and looked towards the small house. I saw someone peeking out of some curtains upstairs. It looked like Kiara. She suddenly ran from the window before I could wave. I thought that it was weird but shrugged it off and walked up to the door. Mrs. Chesterfield had the door open before I could finish walking up the walkway.
"Welcome Katelyn. I'm glad that you could make it." A chill ran down my spin from the tone of her voice plus the creepy grin she had on her face. But I forced back my uneasiness as nerves and smiled back at her.
"Glad to be here ma'am." She snorted. Too low for normal ears to have picked up on it but my ears heard it loud as day. She ushered me in to the living room to wait.
"Dinner will be ready momentarily." I nodded and she walked towards what I assumed to be the kitchen area. I looked around seeing all the photos around the room. The were all of Mrs. Chesterfield at different stages of development. The last one was when she looked to be about twelve. She was dressed in a black dress looking really somber. She was in between two caskets. "That was at my parents funeral." I jumped. I didn't notice that she had come back in the room. "A savage beast killed my parents. No one from the small community we lived in wanted to take me so I too became a foster kid. That's why I help them out."
I felt my eyes get watery but blinked away the tears. I wasn't wearing waterproof makeup tonight. "Thank you for taking care of my cousins all this time. I had never known of my dad's side of the family until recently." She looked unmoved by my revelation. Instead, she chose to call the twins downstairs for dinner. I smiled at the two girls as they came downstairs dressed in tan slacks and dress shirts. Kendra's was purple and Kiara's was a pale blue. They wore worried expressions.
"To the table ladies. I hope everyone's hands are washed." Mine weren't. She had me wash my hands in the kitchen sink while she had the twins set the table. I heard something moving behind me. I had just turned off the faucet when something hit my head hard. I saw stars and then fell to the ground. I heard the twins scream. I forced my eyes to open. The scene in front of me caused my heart to skip a couple of beats. Mrs. Chesterfield had a knife in her hand. It made me want to shift but I knew I couldn't because Chesterfield wasn't one of us. Me and Jackson finally came up with a better word last night for the whole process of changing into a wolf but now wasn't the time to reflect. I needed to save the twins.
"What are you doing?" I had finally found my voice. She looked over her shoulder at me. She had a sneer on her face.
"I'm getting rid of you three nuisances. I can't have werewolves running around." That made me and the twins freeze. "Oh yes. I guess since you haven't figured it out yet, You must not know. I know those two things don't." I growled a low growl. "I'm a werewolf hunter as were my mother and father. A wolf killed them and scratched me. The whole community we lived in wanted nothing to do with me. Not even my own older sister and brother. So I vowed that I would kill any wolves in the foster system. To prevent any further tragedies. I tracked the wolf that killed my parents to these two. Then you just so happened to appear and so kindly be related to them. So now you die too." She smirked again. "But first, I'll deal with them."
I tried to get up but my head throbbed every time I tried. Kiara was crying and Kendra was shielding her. I could see and sense her fear as well. I saw Chesterfield pull her arm back to throw the blade at them. I never noticed that she had two of them. I did what I had to do and launched myself between them when the knives went flying at them. They shrieked and I winced as I felt one land in my shoulder and the other in my right arm that I had used to shield them. I fell to my knees. I managed to pull the one in my arm out but I couldn't manage to pull the one in my shoulder out.
"Pity. I wanted you to watch them die first. I guess plans will have to change for now." I couldn't die. I had to protect them. I knew from watching them rough housing that they weren't strong enough to defend themselves yet. I then did the unthinkable. I reached around ignoring the pain and pulled the knife out of my shoulder. I grunted as I pulled it out but threw it to the floor away from us. I decided I needed to shift to protect them. It was my duty to protect them. I somehow managed to shift while in pain.
I growled at the lady in front of me and lunged at her. She easily dodged my attack. I kept coming at her until I managed to clamp my jaw around her ankle. She screamed and grabbed the closest thing to her which happened to be a vase, and smashed it against my head. I let go and backed up. I shook off the initial shock that was brought on by more head trauma and came at her again. I swiped at her with my paws this time. She dodged my first swipe but wasn't fast enough to dodge the second. I was able to pin her down.
I thought it was over until she grabbed a blade that was concealed under the table we were near and managed to slice my face a little. I growled at her and clamped my jaws around her neck. I shook her hoping to make her too dizzy to do anything else until I heard a sickening c***k. And then she went limp. I dropped her body horrified at what I'd done and then promptly passed out.
