I was praying so hard that I wasn't dead. That I hadn't let those two girls down. I was praying so hard and then, I heard it. The consistent beep of a heart monitor. At first I was relieved, then I got worried. That meant I was back in the hospital again. I frowned and felt something crinkle along my cheek. I managed to lift my hand and tried to take it off but a small hand stopped me. It was also followed by a familiar voice.
"Don't you dare take that off Missy or you and I will have to have a long talk when you get out." My eyes shot open and saw Ms. Mapp sitting by my bed side. "So, do you remember what happened?" I nodded cautiously remembering my head trauma. I knew that I could heal fast but head traumas were the worst ones to heal quick. Constant migraines. "Okay. Well, you were right about Mrs. Chesterfield. I didn't realize that she was a hunter. If I had known that, then I..."
"What do you mean if you had known? You mean you know of the existence of people like me and the twins?" I didn't include Jackson. If she doesn't know about him being a werewolf, then she probably didn't need to. She gave me a expectant look.
"You forgot about Jackson honey. And yes. I know of the existence of werewolves. One of my former best friends was one. She and her family were killed by a hunter. I only knew because I was spending the night when she first changed. Any who. With the twins about to come forward about what happened, you are almost guaranteed custody of the twins." I looked at her in aw. I had no idea that she knew about us.
"I'm sorry for all of the mean things I said the other day. I had gone off my med's and was having a very bad reaction to it. I really didn't mean..."
"It's okay sweetie. I know that you were going through things and experiences that you've never encountered before and that can be tough on sixteen year old's. That was one of the reason's that I was so hesitant at first when you mentioned taking the twins. But now that I know what they are, I know that you are what is best for them. They need you. And, well, you need your pack. You're an alpha now sweetie. That means you are a leader. You must act as such now." A knock on my room door interrupted her from saying more. For the two girls in question had come to visit with happy faces. So happy in fact that Ms. Mapp looked confused.
"What's got you two so stir crazy happy? I mean, I know that it is an extremely good thing that I'm alive but that doesn't warrant those kind of happy faces." Kendra rolled her eyes and Kiara explained.
"The courts said that after she gets out of the hospital, we can start living with her immediately!" That sent a shock through my system. When did anyone have time to go through the court system with this? "For right now we have been living with Ms. Mapp temporarily."
"Hold up. How long have I been out for?" Everyone started to look a bit uncomfortable with that question. I looked around at each of their faces. None of them met my eyes. None of them responded. "Well?"
"Well what?" We all looked to see Jackson entering my now crowded hospital room. "Glad to see that your up and awake. I was afraid that you would miss your birthday." I stared at him dumbstruck. I couldn't have been knocked out for that long. It just isn't possible. All the school that I've missed. All the work that I've missed. "Katelyn! Breath sweetheart! Breath." I heard that stupid heart monitor pick up. I must have started panicking. I slowly regained control of my breathing and calmed my sporadic heart rate. I managed by the time a doctor rushed in.
"Well now. It seems that we have a patient that is finally up and at 'em and she also has a room full of guests again." They all turned away. The twins blushed. "How are you feeling Ms. Moore?" He asked while looking over my vitals.
"I'm fine. How long have I been out?"
"Just a little over two weeks. Your body seems to have healed rather quickly in our opinion but we still recommend that you take it easy over the next few weeks and see your therapist in about a week to deal with any possible trauma from what happened." I sighed but agreed with the doctor knowing that with all of my witnesses, I was going to be forced to comply. "You can go home in two days. Now I want you to get some rest." He gave everyone a stern look leaving no room for argument. They all left slowly though giving me hugs and kisses on their way out.
After they all left, the doctor gave me some pain med's for the slight headache I had and I started to drift off. The next two days went by rather quickly. The Wong's visited me as well as Mr. Robert. Ms. Monroe visited me my release day early in the morning. When she came in, I almost started crying. "Don't make that face Katelyn. I know you think you let me down. And in reality, you did." My lip started to tremble. "Put that lip back in. I didn't come to lecture you about you and Jackson having a secret job.
"I came to tell you that I'm proud of you and Jackson." I looked at her confused. "You two are part of the top ten students in my school. You being my number one student. But next time you face a problem about finances, please find someone who can help you and ask for that help. Believe it or not but there are people who care about you very much and who would do anything they can to help you. You are a bright mind. Please don't waste it." She gave me a hug after her big speech. I was able to hold back my tears. After that, I vowed to start asking for help when needed. I won't be afraid anymore. I will be the strong alpha that my pack needs.
