On the run
Tears spilled down her face as her friend pleaded “Please take her, he cannot find her." The woman held a tiny baby girl in her arms, tears streaming down her face. She was a beautiful woman. She had long brown hair and forest green eyes. She stood there pleading with her friend as in what looked to be a small bedroom.  The bedroom had a queen bed on the one wall. Two grey dressers sat opposite the bed along with a beautiful wooden rocking chair that sat on the other side of the room near a window that looked out at the forest. Just beside the window was another door leading outside. She pulled at her friend “No I will not leave you!” She begged pulling harder, but when they heard a loud crashing sound out of the room, she knew it was too late he was here. The door groaned with each bang to its wooden frame.  “It is too late you need to take her and run,” she placed the little baby in the woman’s arms. The baby was so small wrapped in a soft pink blanket that came up over the back of her head keeping her in a safe cocoon of warmth. “Please Willow keep her safe, don’t let him find her,” She gently kissed the baby girl’s forehead before looking back up at Willow more tears spilling from her eyes.  Willow couldn’t say anything as she fought back tears looking her best friend for the last time “I will keep her safe,” She hugged her tight before whispering in her ear “I love you Mina,” hearing another crash she quickly rushed to the back door. Opening the door, she took one last glance at Mina before escaping into the dark night.  Mia watched Willow run off disappearing into the darkness of the forest. Biting her lower lip fighting back sobs as she watched her baby girl leave. Sadness consumed her go knowing she would never see her baby girl again. This was the end of the road for Mia. A sad smile curved her lips knowing the silver lining in her tragic end was that even though she would never get to see her grow up her baby girl would live. She would be free.  6 years later... “Mama Willow,” Lilith cried out running into the living room.  “What is the matter my little lily pad?” Willow came out of the kitchen wearing a pair of worn jeans and t-shirt; her hair in loose auburn curls that stopped just at her shoulders.                Walking over she knelt to wipe the tears that fell down the young girl’s face. “What happened my sweet?” she asked again. The little girl pouted looking up through her long thick black lashes.                Staring at the young girl she still couldn’t get over her unique eyes. The young girl’s left eye was a brilliant ocean blue, and her right was a bright emerald green. They were striking combined with her hair that was a pale blonde almost white.                “I hurt my knee trying to catch the butterflies.” she wept rubbing her eyes again.    “Let me take a look,” she said now inspecting the young girl’s knee. The cut was already closing. “It’s okay my sweet it is all better,” she said as she kissed the cut, “I kissed it all better.” Willow ran her fingers gently across Lilith's face removing more of the little girl’s tears.                Looking down the young girl was in shock to see the cut was gone. “Thank you, mama willow,” She exclaimed jumping into Willows arms.                “Anytime my beautiful Lily,” Willow said hugging her tightly. “Now it is time for you to open your birthday present.” She handed her a little box. The girl tore it open in excitement to find a beautiful silver necklace with a moon and a yellow stone in the middle.                “It’s so beautiful,” the little girl said staring at the necklace in the box. Grabbing the necklace and unclasping it, Willow put it around her neck before closing the clasp back up.                “This is a special necklace, you can never take it off,” Willow said gently lifting the girls chin up meeting her gaze. “Lilith you need to promise me you will never take this necklace off no matter what.”    Lilith nodded at Willow before sticking her pinky out. “Pinky promise.” Willow couldn’t help but laugh as she hooked her pinky around hers.                “Pinky promise,” Willow repeated. “Now let’s go eat some cake my birthday girl,” she said as she scooped Lilith up and headed out of the room toward the kitchen.  10 Years later... "But why,” Lilith groaned stomping her foot down in irritation. “Lily, I already told you it is too dangerous for you to go into town alone, we cannot risk it,” Willow said crossing her arms.              “But it’s my sixteenth birthday I just want to go into town to the mall,” She huffed dropping down on the stool leaning her arms on the kitchen counter. Looking at Willow she began to pout as she looked up through her eyelashes.  “Please mama willow,” She pouted even more.             “Oh no you don’t, the pouty lip routine doesn’t work on me,” Willow turned from her trying to stick to her decision.                “I will follow the rules,” Lilith began, “I won’t talk to anyone, I'll be in and out, and I'll keep my necklace on at all times,” she said as she subconsciously moved the pendant back and forth between her fingers.                Turning to face Lilith again Willow sighed in defeat. “Fine, but only for a few hours. I want you home for dinner.” Lilith squealed in excitement as she jumped from her seat running over to willow and jumping into her arms.                “I will follow the rules, thank you mama willow,” she exclaimed hugging willow tight.    Willow watched as Lilith grabbed her jacket and bag before rushing out of the door. She couldn’t believe Lilith was already sixteen, where had the time gone by. It felt like yesterday that she was racing through the forest, a young 29-year-old woman about to take on the hardship of raising a child, being her mother, keeping her safe.    Now at forty-five she was no longer the young spry witch she used to be. Her hair was now streaked with gray, and her forehead creased when she lifted her brows. None of that mattered though, all that mattered was keeping Lilith safe, her little Lily pad.                “Willow,” the voice rang in her ears snapping her awake as she shot up from the couch gasping for air. Looking around the room in panic only to find no one was there. She could feel the hair on her neck and arms raise up and she knew their time had run out.  Lilith almost skipped through the mall as her excitement burst out of her. She was never allowed to go into town. They always kept a low profile as to not raise any suspicion. They had just moved to this town a week ago just in time for her sixteenth birthday.                           In her sixteen years of living Lilith had learned how to fight, the art of moving around constantly, living off the land, saving money, and to never trust anyone. Willow was teaching her how to survive and stay under the radar. She was never allowed to make friends or go to school, Willow homeschooled her because she said they couldn’t leave a trail.                While sifting through a rack of shirts Lilith’s phone began buzzing in her back pocket. The only person who would call was Willow, no one else knew the number. Pulling her phone out she flipped it open. “I am almost done and then I will be ri-”  Willow cut her off before she could finish her sentence.                “No! you can’t come home,” Willow rushed out trying not to yell.    “What do you mean what’s going on?” Lilith questioned as her heartbeat quickened.                “He has found us,” Lilith’s heart stopped in fear. “You have to run and don’t look back.” Willow's voice cracked, and she could hear her soft sob through the phone. “Remember what I taught you,” she continued, “Say the rules.” Lilith hesitated only for a moment as tears began forming in her eyes.                “Keep moving, don’t talk to anyone, avoid going into town, trust no one, and never take my necklace off,” her lip began to quiver as she tried to hold back her tears.              “That’s my Lily pad. I thought we had more time my sweet, but don’t fret, I will see you again in this life or the next. I love you my sweet Lily.” before Lilith could say anything back Willow had hung up.                Closing her phone, she took a shaky deep breath before rushing out of the store. Running through the mall she knew she didn’t have much time before they would come looking for her, she needed to get to their designated spot to get her emergency bag. Just before running out the exit, she tossed her phone into the garbage, she couldn’t risk it. 6 Years later...         It was a nice day; the sun was high. It was a warm day with a nice breeze that kept it from getting too uncomfortable. Lilith looked up at the trees as she took in a deep breath, it had been 6 years since she lost Willow. That day changed her life forever, she was now all alone.  She kept her promise never staying in a place too long, keeping out of town, never trusting anyone, and keeping her necklace on.                Walking through the forest she finally got to her destination a little wooden cottage. It wasn’t much but it was all she needed and was right beside a beautiful lake. She had only been here two weeks and knew it was approaching that time to move on. She didn’t normally stay this long in one place, but she was tired, and the cottage was in the deep forest where no townie could possibly stumble upon her.               “Home sweet home,” She walked into the cottage tossing her boots to the side, “for now.” She sighed while shutting the door and locking it behind her. She was tired of running, it was lonely keeping her distance from the world, but she knew she couldn’t risk him finding her though.               Heading straight for the kitchen she tossed her bag down on the small table. The kitchen was tiny it only had a little counter with enough space for a coffee machine and the sink. There was a small fridge in the corner with an outdated stove beside it. There was a small row of cupboards on the wall that housed a few plates and cups.                Opening her bag, she quickly emptied it putting away her groceries. For the most part she tried to live off the land, but she did have to make the occasional trips to town for supplies she could not find in the forests. Thankfully she was able to find odd jobs here and there. She knew this sort of broke her rule about never going to town, but she wasn’t a witch like Willow, she couldn’t use magic to conjure money, supplies or food when needed.                Walking into the bedroom it wasn’t huge or anything fancy, but it was better than sleeping in a tent. In the middle of the room was a double bed with a scratchy comforter.  There was a small wooden dresser off the side and a big window looking out at the lake.                Walking over to the dresser she didn’t waste any time as she stripped her clothes off tossing them into a little laundry hamper before putting her bathing suit on. After the day she had she needed a quick swim in the lake, it was one of the best parts about renting this cabin. Just before she went to head out of the room, she passed the mirror on the wall. Stopping with a sigh she looked at her complexion.            Staring at her short black bob she raised her hands pulling it off to reveal long wavy pale blond hair that fell to her lower back. Tossing the wig on the dresser she then moved her hands to her eyes. With one swift motion she removed contacts, revealing her eyes where not a deep chestnut brown, but one ocean blue eye and one emerald green.                One benefit to being so beep in the forest she could just be herself. She didn’t have to keep her contacts in or her wig on in fear that someone would recognize her. Out here she could almost be free. A slight smile crept on her face as she headed out of the room and out of the cottage.                          Dipping her toes into the cool water sent chills up her body cooling her instantly down. A smile spreading across her face as she walked deeper into the lake letting the cold water engulf her. Laying back she let herself float farther out relaxing to the sway of the water.  She would stay here forever if she could, to live in a little old cottage deep in the woods right beside the lake. To just live a simple life away from all the heart ache and pain. To just be free.
