Chapter One
Ruth’s POV
“Williams.” I grabbed his hands, looking extremely worried. “I don’t think this is the right thing to do.” I shook my head vigorously.
“Is there any right thing in this world? I need your help this time, my love.” His voice was so calm and loving. I have never seen Williams so impatient and anxious for something and this wasn’t the first time he was asking for something so risky. I was afraid.
“But, why do you want this?” I swallowed hard on nothing. “You know how important the defense map and weapons are to this pack.” I reminded him seriously.
“Yes but if I don’t do this, you might no longer see me anymore.” He urged me with his sharp brown eyes.
“Why? Is this some task someone gave to you?” I asked him anxiously but he didn’t respond. I rolled my eyes, still feeling uncomfortable with his choice. My father would never be happy with me if ever he found out about my actions.
“Will you return it?” I closed my eyes briefly before asking him. I had to do it, he was my mate and if that was what I had to do to protect him, I would risk it. He nodded his head impatiently.
“Yes, babe. I will return it.” He assured me.
“Then, I will get it for you.” A small smile formed on my lips and he pulled me into a tight embrace, he stroked my back tenderly.
“But…” I couldn’t finish my statement and his gaze fluttered.
“But what?” He questioned, his hands holding my arms.
“What happens if we get caught?” I raised a brow, staring into his eyes which suddenly became restless but then he flashed me a smile that didn’t seem genuine.
“I will protect you with all I have got, Ruth. I will never let any danger come to you, just help me this last time.” He assured me, staring into my eyes and he was able to crumble the uncertainty I had at heart. I nodded happily.
Without a word, he left and I was alone thinking of how to get the things he wanted.
Inwardly, I felt it was not right. If he loved me, he wouldn’t have exposed me to such risk.
In the evening, I went into my father’s battlefield meeting room and luckily, there was no one in sight. I felt the goddess was helping me when I easily grabbed the defense map on the table and nothing happened. I rushed out of the room and went forward to the weapon storage, I knew the storage was always guarded so I supported myself with a small potion of dizzy drug which I planned to use on them if ever they saw me. But to my surprise, the place was unguarded, giving me easy access to the room.
Suddenly, Williams surfaced and I exhaled in relief.
“Thank goodness you are here.” I gasped. “I already got the defense map, can you take the weapons you need?” I raised a brow and he smiled, taking the defense map.
“Thank you so much, babe.” Though we had little time on our side to act romantic, he kissed me on my forehead before taking out the weapons, and I also assisted him in carrying some.
“Just a few steps and we will be out of here.” He assured me and I nodded, later it dawned on me that I was the only one carrying the weapons and defense map.
By the time I tried to call his attention for support, we were suddenly surrounded by my father’s men. My face was engulfed in shock, fear, and disbelief.
I tried to reach for Williams, falling the weapons but his weird body movement left me stunned.
“What a pleasing sight.” My father’s personal bodyguard, Rio, clapped his hands with a cold smile on his face.
The entire pack members and elders were gathered in the announcement ground, as the guards dragged I and Williams to the center.
My father, Jason, who was the Alpha of the pack was standing on the high platform, giving me a dirty look and as I couldn’t behold his sight, I lowered my face.
“I didn’t do it. I didn’t do anything wrong.” I shook my head frantically.
“You didn’t do it?” My father snorted, gradually approaching us. “My so-called daughter stole my defense map and weapons to sell to the enemies or whatever and you claim not to do it?” My father raised a scornful displeased brow.
“I really didn’t do it, father.” My eyes swayed to Williams. “Williams, explain to them what happened,” I remembered I still had a mate who would stand by me and protect me so there was nothing for me to be afraid of.
“My lord, I was on my own when Ruth called me for help. She asked me to help her in transferring some old weapons to give to a friend for sale, I didn’t know it was the pack’s valuable, I only agreed to help her because she insisted and she was also my mate.” My eyes widened in shock on hearing Williams' words. He rattled out heartlessly without caring about my feelings.
“What?” My neck veins surfaced as I boiled in anger.
“Interesting. Ruth, you have really become cruel since I stopped looking at you.” My father yelled at me with an annoying voice.
“Father, that is not true!” I retorted in anger. “Williams called me for help. He asked me to steal the defense map and weapons. He even promised to protect me if I was caught and now he is lying?” I was in disbelief, staring at my mate who had just rejected me publicly.
“And you did it? Is that how you were trained?” My father questioned in disgust and I couldn’t proffer an answer. He sighed.
“My lord, I’m really sorry I couldn’t stop her when she was trying to do something wild.” Williams' annoying voice came out again and I shot him a dirty look.
“Shut up!” I yelled at him.
“No, you shut up!” My father fired at me.
“Do you think as your father I would go easy on you or just ground you?” My father raised a brow, giving me a cold stare.
“What do you mean?” I muttered frantically, fervently praying it wasn’t what I was expecting.
“You will be punished to death by hanging.” It was the worst. My jaw dropped when I heard my father’s sentence. If it was from a stepfather, it would have hit differently.
