The Lake House.
Everyone uses the Lake House story as a scary story around the bonfire.
The Original Story, is that after the war, a lot of werewolves where instable, a lot have lost their mates, and they rampage the other pack members when they lost control, so the Alpha arranged a solution, they will be living in a house on the other side of the lake, near the border, it was a far way for them to not hurt the pack, but not out to become rogues, the pack warriors always did patrolling around that area just to maintain everything in order, and they always told stories about trees ripped from the floor, dead rogues around the area, they never came across the wolf’s that were sent to that area, they say that maybe the rogues gets to them, or they simple died of heartbroken.
When I was around 11 years old, we were all playing hide and seek, and I went walking and walking and walking, no one was mind linking me to come back, the game was still on, never passes in my head that they forgot about me, my brother that day was sick so he was not playing. I got to the Lake House and got curious, so I went in, the inside was a mess, everything is broken, garbage all around, a filthy mattress on the floor, I do not know why but it hurt me to see that, I gave a tour around the house and saw no one. Then I found a cleaning cabinet, but only a mop and a broom there, I pick up the broom and cleaned the house.
Someone was outside the house looking at me, I left the door open while I was cleaning. When I was done cleaning, I found a jar, I got out to the lake, put some water on it, picked some flowers, and put it back in the house. Mom's mind linked me, and I had to go back.
A pair of green eyes follow me from the house near a big rock that is used as a landmark for the warriors and got back to the house after losing me from its sight, got inside the house and went near the window with the jar, and smelled the flowers.
The next day I got a wheeled cart and put everything I needed to clean inside. Everyone was saying I was weird, I told my parents I was only picking up flowers near the forest, but I went inside, and since Alan was still sick, they were occupied. Every time those eyes would follow every move I made and follow me when I got back.
One day I was leaving the house, at last, I was able to clean the mattress I was too small, to bring big stuff, so I just put benches in the house, puffs that I found in the storage warehouse, where we put everything we don’t need and if somebody wants something they got here to pick it up. I got a nightstand not too big, made of bamboo, I wanted to bring a bed, but it was too large for me to pick up, and I could not tell anyone I was going to the lake house. I bumped into someone. He was huge and was looking at me, his smell made me froze, Rainy Day, and Pine.
“What are you doing here?” His voice was tired and like thunder. I shake, I was found out. I look at him and saw his clothes were all ripped, what was supposed to be pants are shorts now, all ripped down, and his t-shirt, well it was, rips only. First, I thought rogue, but rogues do not smell like that. I look into his eyes green.
“Are you the one living here mister?” I used my most innocent voice. “Do you know who are the creatures that live here?” I nod my head no, although I heard the stories. “The ones that live here are outcasts, wolves that can no longer live in the pack, crazy wolfs, do you understand?” I nod again this time a yes.
“Why are you here then?” His presence was of authority. “I was cleaning.” Pointing to the cabin. “That I could see, but why?” His eyes never left mine. “Because the house was dirty, and everyone needs a clean house.” I fidget with my hands. “We are dirt, we do not need anything clean.” I looked up at him and said with confidence. “IF the house is not clean, how are you going to clean your self?”
He stared for a long time.
“A clean house, makes you appreciate everything around you, makes you take notice of the small things.” I continued talking. “Like flowers?” I smile at him. “Like flowers make the house happy. That is what I think about.” I was proud that he notice the flowers.
He looks over me to the house a smile appears on his face. “You know my wife liked flowers. She had a little garden in the back of our house.” He talked looking away. “Where is your wife?” His eyes turned sad and gloomy. “She died in the rogue attacks.” He came back looking at me. “You mean last year’s attack?” I was looking up to him since he was taller.
“It has been one year already.”
I nod, I am great at history class. They always remind us of the most recent attack, that killed hundreds of us.
“Are you a warrior?” He smirked a little. “I was once.” I frown. “Why not now?” His voice became low and raspy. “I am broken.” I did not understand. “Why?” His eyes were trying to hold tears. “Because I lost my wife.” His hands got to cover his face.
“Did she want you to be broken?”
He froze at that.
“Did she not like about you being a warrior?” His hands left his face that was now a little softened like remembering something good. “She was a warrior too.” I nodded. “I once read a book, about a man that lost her wife, he told in the book that it hurt so bad that it seems like a piece of a puzzle was lost forever, do you feel that way?” He looked at his hand. “Maybe.”
“Can’t you find another piece?” He closed his hand looking down. “I don’t think I can.”
“Was she your soul mate?” He looked at me, then he came down to my size. “She as my chosen mate.” I could see his face now. The traces of his years with the dark circles around his eyes, that seemed empty. “Chosen mate is not your soul mate.” He smirked a little bit. “How do you know that?” I was now with my hands in my waist like a teacher giving a lesson. “Because the soul mate is the Moon Goddess that gives it to you.” He laughs a little. “Little girl that is a myth.” I stood there and continued with my resolve. “If I could find your soul mate will you find your piece of the puzzle?” He made a face like he was thinking.
“According to the legends not only a piece but the other half of me.” I smiled at him. “I will find your other half, but you must look good to her.” I point my finger at his clothes. He laughs. “As you wish princess.”
“Another thing, you will need to become a warrior again.” He lifts an eyebrow at me. “Why?” I point at the house. “Someone needs to protect this house, other as you might need it. I can help them also.” I got up looked to the cabin and said with a severe voice. “Only rogues pass here.”
“Rogues have a special scent, right?” He looks back at me. “Yes, some scent like rotten fruit and the most recent still have their scent, but it starts to disappear.” I just nodded.
“As a warrior do you leave the pack?” He got curious in my conversation. “Leave?” I nod my head like a yes. “Sometimes, when they call for help, or we go with the Alpha to meetings.”
“Is not the same but it might work.” I was immersed in thinking. “What might work?” I forget I told that out loud. I look up at him with an innocent smile. “Do not laugh, and do not tell the Alpha please.” He lifts an eyebrow at me.
“I can scent wolfs smells and find when they are the same.” His face twitches weirdly, like spoked. “By the same you mean if they are together?” I look down at my hands. “No, like.” I fidget. “You can trust me.” He pats my head. “Like to pieces of the same puzzle.” He never leaves my head comforting me. “I understand. Why can’t I tell the Alpha?” I look at him with teary eyes. “He does not believe in me.” Breaths “I see.”
“If I help you find your other half, you will help me also?” I clean my tears and look up to him. “What can I do for you?” I try to sound determined. “Protect me.” He crosses his arms over the chest. “From what?” I don’t want to sound weak. “The pack, the boys, the girls.” His tone softened. “Are you being bullied?” I nod a yes. “Ok. You got my warrior word.” I looked at the forest. “I must go.”
I looked at him standing and smiling, he let me pass to pick up my things and came with me until the marker rock, then he waved me goodbye.
I never saw the way he looked because I started running home, it was late, he was mind linking someone.
Later that day at dinner, the Alpha announced that Pacey was coming back. I saw a lot of mouths open looking at the Alpha, someone even asked if it was ok for him to come back, the Alpha said that tomorrow we would have a talk to him with the Warriors Commander and they will see.
The next day I see the man from the Lake House coming to the packhouse in the morning, I was leaving for school with mom, he sends me a small smile, I smile at him also.
When I got back, he was in the packhouse, all cleaned up, haircut,” You got clean.” I recognized him anyway by his scent. “You recognized me.” I smile “Your scent is the same.” He patted my head “I got back to my warrior job.” I jumped in joy, like the kid I was.
“You already meet, Aleena, she is our gamma daughter.” Alpha Oscar coming at the door. “Ready to start training again?” He bowed to him. “Yes. Alpha.” He gave one step closer to Pacey. “As you asked this is the new keys to the lake house, the workers are fixing everything in there now. Are you sure you want to stay there?” He picked the keys up. “Yes, Alpha, that house made me rejuvenate. I was thinking maybe we should use it as a guardhouse, and make a few more around the borders, that way the patrols, can rest when needed, and we will have always someone there to watch for rogues.” He seems to be thinking. “That is a good idea, I will run it by the Commander later one. Glad to have you back Pacey.” And patted Pacey on the back. “Is good to be back Alpha.”
He then blinked at me.
“Better to help with the house.”
After that day I did not see Pacey a lot, only in warrior reports or meetings, he was much better but still was better for him to be away from the pack until I find his other half.
I wake up. That dream Rain and pine, that scent hit me, then Jasmin and Pine, and I realize. OH my god. I found his Mate.
