Chapter 1
As I pushed open the door to my house, I knew today was another day of t*****e. Smelling the rich fragrance of meat from the kitchen, I heard my family chatting away happily. My injured arm was still bleeding, but nobody spared me any attention as I arrived.
I walked into the kitchen, seeing my mother Natasha preparing the lamb. I carefully approached her, wishing to hug her body. However, she raised her head and condemned me coldly.
“Don’t touch me. You’re nothing but a troublemaker. Get out.”
My hands froze in mid-air. Looking at Mother’s indifferent figure, loneliness and helplessness flooded my heart.
“Sierra, come out for a second. Father wants to talk to you.” Kate leaned against the kitchen wall as she sized me up. I could tell my sister was laughing at me. After all, she always saw me as a joke.
“Did something happen?” With an uneasy feeling in my heart, I left the kitchen.
The moment I entered the living room, I could feel my father, Cline Collins’s gaze cutting deep into my skin. I covered the wound on my arm out of instinct, but that was not enough to hide it from him.
“It was just the training ground. How did you get hurt by that?” His authoritative gaze and tone seemed to have frozen the air around us. “Sierra, you disappoint us. Your mother and I have the blood of the Tarlow Pack running within us. We have always raised the strongest Alphas. But you, you just had to be a pathetic Omega.”
“Father, I…”
“It’s our fault for giving birth to you in the first place. Your wolf is extremely weak. Do you have any idea how humiliating that is for our family?!”
I was left speechless, but my vision soon became cloudy from tears.
Earlier today, I waited for the warriors of the Tarlow Pack to finish training before starting my cleaning. However, a few reckless young boys decided to use me as their sandbag. They were nothing but ordinary Omegas, but I was still weak in front of them. The other Omegas watched us as if they were watching a show. Some of them even urged the boys to kill me.
I failed to inherit the noble Alpha bloodline, and this failure would haunt me forever.
I knew how the people of our pack talked about me behind my back. They called me a monster, an offering that should have been killed.
However, I refused to become like that. I wished to become a strong warrior, strong enough to protect our pack like my ancestors.
“Dad, can you give me some more time? I can do it.” I choked out my words, begging my father.
“We’ve given you countless chances. Why should we keep you around when you’re this useless?!” Father sounded extremely disappointed, his words as cold as ice. Unwilling to spare me another glance, he walked toward the dining room.
Kate was standing on the side, watching the entire conversation with a fake smile. “Don’t be upset, Sierra. You should feel grateful that you’re still allowed to live in this hour as an Omega.”
I glanced at Kate, sorrow filling my heart. She was Mother and Father’s proudest child. She was powerful, outstanding, and the future matriarch of this pack. Most importantly, she was a warrior.
Holding in the humiliation I felt in my heart, I murmured, “I won’t give up, Kate. I’ll become a great warrior, and I will protect our pack…”
Slap!
Before I could even finish, Kate slapped me across the cheek.
Sneering, she yanked my hair without any mercy. “What right do you have to protect our pack? You’re just an Omega. This pack will be mine in the future, and you’re just a bug that I’ll chase out one day. Your existence has polluted the pack. The Tarlows don’t need trash like you.”
Kate laughed hysterically and pinched my wound with much force. The pain made me tremble. With my blood staining her hand, she smeared it on the wall. My blood mixed with the dust, filthy and weak as ever.
As filthy and weak as me.
Very soon, the dining table was filled with food. The fragrance of the delicacies filled the air, but all I deserved was a bowl of bland porridge. Mother forbade me from eating in the same room as them. To her, I was a waste of space. Likewise, I was not allowed to live inside a room like them. Instead, I slept in the cold attic.
Silently, nighttime arrived. Curled up in the tiny attic, I gazed at the silvery moon through the gaps of the roof. I was waiting for David. David was my chosen mate. He was the only person in the pack who could bring me warmth. Needless to say, I loved him dearly. We promised to meet each other on the roof every night. He rarely went back on his promises. Today, he arrived again with some delicious chicken. I crawled out of the attic and started devouring the food beside him. Yet, he seemed to look distracted.
“David, what’s wrong?”
“Is cleaning the only thing you can do?” His eyes reflected subtle hints of disgust. “I heard them say you were thrown into the air by some insignificant peasants when you were cleaning.”
Unwilling to think back to the unpleasant memory, I shook my head bitterly. “Why don’t we talk about something else?”
“I’m going to the bathroom.” Unlike before, David seemed very agitated. Hearing my words, he stood up suddenly and blurted out his words. Before I could even reply to him, he jumped down the attic.
I stared at his back silently, an anxious feeling growing within my heart.
As I finished the last bit of my chicken, a sharp pain suddenly rushed through me. My blood boiled as if it was set on fire. Thousands of worms crawled beneath my skin, digging relentlessly into my bones and devouring me from the inside.
“No…” Shriveled up from the pain, I rolled on the floor. The wooden boards of the attic creaked loudly from my violent struggles, only to add to my pain further.
“No!”
I could feel Gray… I could feel my wolf experiencing the same sort of pain I was.
Gray: Sierra, our mate betrayed us!
Me: No… That can’t be true… David loves me…
Gray: But this pain is very real! Sierra! It hurts so much!
The pain lasted for centuries, enough to break anyone into a thousand pieces. I lay on the ground, weak and too exhausted to move. The cold sweat on my body stuck to my clothes. It was as if I had just experienced hell.
I stumbled down the attic, only to see David coming out of Kate’s room. Kate stood by her door, showing me a silent smile. Too shocked by everything I witnessed, I opened my mouth, but not a single word came out.
How… How could David do this…
The man tidied up his clothes as he gazed down at me, not a single trace of love in his eyes. Instead, David’s eyes were filled with disgust and disdain, a terrifying look that he had never shown me before. At that moment, he looked like everyone else in the pack—he looked like he was ready to tear me apart.
“David, why did you…” I reached out my hand, hoping that he could hold on to me. My body was still in immense pain. Yet, he only kicked my hand away.
“Stay away from me,” David squatted down, haunting me with his sinister smile as he towered over me. “I’ve had enough of you, Sierra. I’ve had enough of the meaningless time we’ve spent together. The thought of you makes me sick. Every time I see you, I always have the urge to cleanse my eyes. I’ve only ever loved Kate because she’s the mate I’ve always wanted. Get that lowly Omega scent away from me. You’re the type of werewolf I hate the most.”
Just to drive the nail into the coffin, he continued, “I, David Smith, refuse to accept Sierra Collins as my mate.”
Kate wrapped her arms around David, leaning in for a kiss. With that, their intimacy only progressed.
“Do you see this, Sierra? Don’t even think about becoming a warrior. You don’t even have the right to stay here. Now, even David is mine.” She caressed David’s cheek, and David did the same.
“You’re so beautiful, my dear.”
Pain flooded my body, but my heart hurt more than anything else. I curled up into a ball, using all my strength to cling to David’s leg, begging him to stop torturing me. To me, none of this could possibly be real. Yet, he did not spare a single thought for me and dragged me all the way to the entrance of the house.
Within me, my wolf screamed, Sierra! Let go! This man doesn’t deserve you!
I knew it was right, but how could I just give up?
Me: Gray, I love him so much… What should I do?
Gray: I’m sorry for being so weak, Sierra… I really hate seeing you like this, but I… I’m so sorry. If only I could be stronger…
Me: No, Gray. Don’t say that. Things will be okay…
I closed my eyes, praying that all this was just a dream. However, it did not take long for others to be attracted to the ruckus. The truth was forced upon me again, as I knew they were coming over to watch the show. With that, my father walked out of his room, his face full of fury as he saw me.
“For God’s sake! How could you steal your sister’s man, Sierra?! You’re an embarrassment to our pack! Leave, now! My lord, why did I have a useless daughter like you?!” They rushed forward to separate me from David, as my mother cursed for my death.
The next day, they chased me out of the house before the sun even rose. They asked me to “piss off” and look for my grandma in the faraway mountains. That place was separated from the rest of the world. To them, I would only cease to be an embarrassment if I stopped existing in this world.
Walking in the bone-chilling forest alone, I was showered by the fluttering snow. Not having the privilege to enjoy the warmth of thick clothing, I trembled in the wilderness. My merciless parents would not even spare a single jacket for me.
As I was about to cross the stream, I heard noises in the bushes behind me. I turned my head abruptly, only to see myself being surrounded by several dark shadows. They were werewolves of the Red Moon Pack, a pack that had always had conflicts with the Tarlows. The Red Moons were also responsible for starting the war back then that murdered countless lives.
Surrounded by the werewolves of the Red Moon, I was too terrified to move. After confirming that I was indeed one of the Tarlows, they started to attack.
“No!” I let out a desperate cry, dashing forward to separate myself from them. Before I could get far, a heavy claw slashed my back, and I tumbled into the nearby rocks with blood all over my body.
Gray: Sierra, let me out! I can protect you!
Me: You won’t win against them.
Gray: I can always fight till my death!
Me: Gray!
My wolf stirred in my body and took control, ready to take on the lethal blows from the powerful werewolves.
Yet, the impact I was expecting never hit. Instead, a formidable shadow appeared before me. He was extremely strong, shrouded by his noble Alpha pheromones. Within mere minutes, all the werewolves from the Red Moon Pack were defeated, some of them barely breathing.
Holding in the pain, I tried to open my eyes to see that Alpha’s face, but he left before I could even spare him a glance.
I’m going to see you alive, Grandma.
It seemed like my life was yet to become utterly hopeless.
