“Did you not eat today, Sierra? Look at how weak your punches are. You can’t even kill a bug. Remember what I told you. Give it your all!”
Grandma grabbed my fist and punched the sandbag forcefully. Extreme pain spread across my fingers, painful enough to almost make me cry. However, Grandma smiled.
“My dear Sierra, never forget what I’m about to tell you. Omegas are weak in physique, but bravery and determination can make up for that. Come, swing your fists again! My darling Sierra, imagine this sandbag to be the people who have humiliated you. If you don’t knock them down now, you’ll have to look up to them for eternity!”
Grandma’s words lit up a roaring fire within my heart.
Gray: Hold on, Sierra! We’ll definitely become stronger!
I gathered up all my strength and focus. Wiping away the sweat dripping down my face, my fist slowly tightened, as if I was ready to strangle someone.
Sierra, you can do this.
With a huge yell, I punched the sandbag in front of me with all the strength within my body. After a muffled thud, the sandbag started to split apart in front of me. With a surprised expression, I watched as sand spread across the floor. I then glanced at my bleeding fist, a huge smile appearing on my face.
“Grandma, I did it!”
Grandma hugged me tightly, her hands warm like the coziest cotton blanket, bringing comfort to my scarred body, “Good girl… My Sierra… Never forget what it means to be a warrior. A warrior will never give up. Even if you find yourself on the edge of the cliff one day, you have to tell yourself. You are a Tarlow warrior. You are the bravest werewolf there ever will be.”
I held Grandma’s words close to my heart. Even though she was elderly and frail, her body delicate like a bunch of dry branches, she was still once a glorious Tarlow warrior who left a legacy. She was a powerful and strong Alpha, and I always admired her. One day, I hoped that I could make her proud too.
Unfortunately, luck was never on my side. Grandma never made it past the second winter. Before she passed away, Grandma clenched my hand tightly, “Sierra, there is a pack secret you should know. Every Tarlow woman will find herself awakening the powers of the wolf once again when she falls pregnant. This power is immeasurable, so please, find yourself a mate who loves you. Marry them, and you shall become stronger. You will never be discriminated against because of your blood ever again. Most importantly, you can say goodbye to solitude.”
As the Red Moons used violence to take over a piece of our land for the first time, Grandma died in the heavy snow. I cried endlessly as I hugged her lifeless body. Grandma’s body was buried in the mountains, her grave covered by stalks of beautiful hyacinth. After all, I knew that was her favorite flower. Borrowing the power of the wind, I called out for her one last time. Very soon, I packed my belongings, ready to return to the pack that chased me away.
When my parents saw me again, their gazes were filled with annoyance and exhaustion. Even though they were the ones who summoned me back, it did not stop them from disliking me like usual.
Father looked at me and said, “As useless as you are, it’s about time for you to do something for the pack. We’re at war, and we need as many people as possible. Go and clean up the battlefield, Sierra. I can’t have the more powerful people doing something so pathetic.”
Little did he know, I was no longer the Sierra Collins he knew in the past. I wished to prove myself to him, but he gave me no opportunity to do so. With a wave of his hand, his attention was no longer on me.
“Well, well. Who do we have here?”
A voice sounded from the door as I heard the footsteps of two people. I raised my head, only to see Kate and David approaching, their hands intertwined. It seemed like they only just returned from the battle. Blood stains could be seen all over their bodies, but judging from Kate’s mood, they claimed victory. David was like an obedient puppy that circled Kate. With a flick of her finger, David rushed to grab her a chair. However, his obedient side was never meant for me. The moment he turned around, he became a ferocious beast, snarling and clearly unamused about my arrival.
“What the hell is she doing here? What an eyesore.”
Kate called for me, only to slap my cheeks with a sneer, “I’m surprised you even managed to come back, Omega. Show me what you learned.” Kate gave David a brief signal. That was all it took for him to charge at me, aiming for my neck. This time, I did not hold back.
I reacted immediately, hitting David’s hand and causing him to back away. At that moment, disbelief appeared in his eyes. Seeing all of this unfold, Kate stood up with a huge frown and slapped David across the face.
“What are you doing? I was nice enough to blame you for dragging me down during battle, yet here you are, embarrassing yourself again by losing to an Omega! You disappoint me, David.”
David rushed to comfort her, but he did not forget to chase me out of the house first. With an aggressive snarl, he said, “Piss off and stop making Kate angry! We don’t want any of your troubles, Sierra!”
Looking at his twisted face, I suddenly found him laughable. He was my mate, my mate who I once loved to bits. As he condemned me, I did not forget to fight back, “This is it, David. If you ever try to humiliate me again, I won’t hesitate to fight back. I’ll have you taste my punches soon enough.”
David looked at me with his mouth agape, but his face only disgusted me. From today onward, I would never give my heart to a random man like an i***t again. My mate could only be the strongest and most intelligent werewolf, capable of giving me the best offspring. Then, I would raise the child myself. Grandma said that being an omega did not mean I could never become outstanding. Even though I was a victim of my blood, my child would not live that fate.
I would shower my child with unconditional love, and his identity or blood would not be enough to change any of that. They deserved the best things in this world, and I knew I would be able to give them everything. Sierra Collins would be a female warrior who did not require the help of men. After all, they would only slow me down.
I returned to the battlefield, cleaning it like I always had. This area was extremely important to Tarlow Pack as it was close to the pack’s headquarters. In other words, the battles that took place here would often be more violent. The ground was stained red by blood, and the air had a metallic taste. Body parts were scattered everywhere in the forest. The remains that were not cleaned away had become food for the ravens.
Together with the other cleaners, we carried the dead bodies one by one to the mass grave. During our fifth trip, a Red Moon werewolf attacked us from the tree. As he jumped down, he swung his claw toward my face. Remembering the tricks that Grandma taught me, I dodged his attack by mere milliseconds.
“Run! Go back to the pack! Inform Miss Kate!”
The other cleaners scattered to run toward safety. They were weak Omegas just like me. Facing a powerful warrior of the Red Moons, they had no choice but to escape. However, I stood my ground. Clenching my fists tightly, I confronted the werewolf in front of me. He was extremely tall. Even as I looked up, I could barely meet his gaze.
Sierra, you can do this. Grandma taught you many things. Today is your chance to become a true warrior!
Me: Gray, I don’t want to run.
Gray: I’ll help you, Sierra. Go forward and give it your all! The glory belongs to you!
Gray’s consciousness overtook my body, manipulating my every move. Our movements were agile as we dodged the werewolf’s attacks nimbly. Both of us were feeling confident.
Gray: Look, Sierra! We can do this! We’ll become the best warrior ever!
Me: You’re right. We’ll become… Gray, look out!
The werewolf charged at us suddenly. The branch underneath Gray’s foot cracked, and we crashed to the ground right in front of the werewolf.
We’re dead.
Watching as the werewolf raised his enormous claw, despair filled my heart.
Suddenly, a shadow flashed across our eyes. The figure yanked us up and started dashing away. Knowing the battle was over, I took over my body again so that Gray could take a rest.
The man finally let go of me when we arrived at a safe area. As he turned around, I realized he was one of the cleaners from just now. Truth be told, he was quite handsome. Even though his face was smeared with blood and dirt, his distinctive features made it difficult for anyone to forget him. Losing myself in thoughts, I realized there was more to this man than his face. He was not wearing a shirt, exposing his healthy tanned skin and toned upper body. I could see his abs, and he also had a tall figure.
I remembered seeing this man on the training ground when he was acting as a punching bag. He was extremely agile, capable of dodging other people’s attacks without much difficulty. He could also lift out giant rocks and throw them into the distance without breaking a sweat.
He was the powerful werewolf that I had been looking for—a werewolf powerful enough to be my offspring’s father.
Yet I could not help but wonder, why would someone like him be a cleaner? He should be a leader instead. With questions in my mind, I spoke out, “Thank you for saving me. What is your name?”
“William,” he did not seem happy. “You should’ve run during those situations. We’re just Omegas, and there’s no way we could’ve won against a Red Moon Alpha. Don’t overestimate yourself like that again.”
William turned to leave, but I stopped him in his tracks. “You look very powerful, William. I don’t think I remember seeing you before in the pack.”
“I’m just a pitiful bug who was lucky enough to find shelter here.” William stepped back and put some distance between us. He did not seem to like me much. “I’m thankful that the Tarlows were kind enough to take me in. I think you’ve misunderstood something. The muscles you see are only useful for running around. I’m just a lowly Omega. Anyone is capable of defeating me”
I was taken aback by his mournful expression. He did not seem to be joking. However, my intuition told me he was not as weak as he claimed.
Me: Gray, does he seem weak or pitiful to you?
Gray: No, Sierra. He is the strongest and most handsome werewolf I’ve ever met.
Me: I think he’s stronger than he seems. He might be hiding his strength. I can feel his aura, and it’s anything but weak. Even though he’s an Omega, I doubt he’s a pitiful bug.
Gray: Rather than thinking to ourselves, why don’t we test him out? Sierra, can we have him?
Me: Of course, he will be ours one day. I need him to give me a strong offspring. That way, we can become powerful and leave the pack. We’ll travel far and wide with our child, living a life of happiness.
Gray: I want to touch his beautiful muscles, and I want to kiss his tender tips. I think we want the same thing, Sierra.
My interest in William grew.
